It takes a lot to speak out in a workplace when others don’t seem to see the problem. When I was 18 in my first full time job something horrible happened that nobody else seemed at all phased by at the time. One of the staff members reported it to the manager and they called everyone in who had been present when it was talked about. As I was just a kid and had only been there 5 minutes they didn’t think I’d have much to say but I was honest about what I’d heard. It then became formal statements with 2 staff suspended, being questioned by their union rep in hearings and ultimately them being fired. I was so ashamed that I’d not spoken out until I was asked that I’ve been particularly outspoken since when I see things I don’t think are right. When you’re junior and surrounded by older experienced people who treat things like the norm you doubt yourself and think you’re over reacting.Sadly this happens in so many workplaces. A junior production member is unlikely to risk their career on the basis that they witnessed some behaviour they deemed to be abusive, with no knowledge of any video evidence. If the producers hadn’t opened up this wider investigation and given people a space to speak freely this likely would’ve never come out. It’s extremely brave of them and Zara to come forward and just shows that so many shows probably need investigations like this.
