I think GoT started to unravel when GRRM stepped away from the show runner team and they ran out of cannon material. Hopefully this won't be the case with HoD as the book is written. Only time will tell.

Agree - it felt like the showrunners were good at adapting existing material when there was detail but couldn't fill in the gaps themselves, like the loose idea GRRM confirmed wasn't enough. wasn't there talk as well of them wanting to move onto some star wars thing, which fell through as a consequence of them botching GOT? 😭

He's been agonising over the end of ASOIAF for years, so I can understand why he stepped away from the show as he wanted more time to get it right. but whatever reason he has for being 'stuck', he now also faces the prospect of writing out an ending the public shat all over haha. I haven't read all of the books tho idk. it's a writer's worst nightmare i'm sure!

I am hopeful this won't happen (at least in the same way) with HoD because it's adapting existing material and they've agreed a set amount of seasons & presumably what will happen when. fingers crossed :)

I read the books up to about book 3 I think. I found them a bit 'overwritten' and thought the showrunners did well getting rid of some of the unnecessary guff in the books. I suppose that is a different skill from writing something from scratch. I agree I don't think GRRM will ever finish the story now. If he writes the same thing, it will be slated but if he writes a different ending then he is damning the TV show even more. And doing fanservice is hardly ever a good idea anyway.

He's got two more books to publish and let's face it he doesn't look like the healthiest bloke! I don't think we'll ever see his ending. He has apparently given his publishers an outline. Give how much the series seemed to divert from the books I wouldn't be surprised if his ending was different.

I’ve been considering re-reading them for the past year but I don’t think I can handle getting to the end of book five again and knowing there’s no more to go 😂😂

Is it worth reading blood and fire? I'm behind on the TV series so may wait until it finishes. Loving it so far but avoiding this thread so as to avoid spoilers. The main cast is all so brilliant.
The Dance of the Dragons doesn’t start until about 30% in. It reads like a history book about the Targaryen family and begins with Aegon the Conqueror. I think if you’re trying to avoid spoilers I would maybe wait until you finish the tv show to read it because it goes through the whole thing.

Unfortunately I agree to this as well! 😭 I have loved seeing the memes of him procrastinating, like this one:

Yeah, agree to all of this. I didn't like the meat of his writing style. I felt like he was good at plot, but not description, though I only read one or two of his books (about ten years ago). The way he wrote sex scenes was a bit nauseating. I guess you can't be good at everything lol

I keep seeing loads of spoilers on Facebook from people who've read the book so have started reading it. It's quite dry so far in the way it's written. Also I don't know if it's just the copy I bought but the font is sooooo small!

For those that want to find out here is a complete history of the war. The voice in the video is rather annoying but it outlines the plot.
DO NOT LOOK AT THIS VIDEO IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS OF WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BOOKS.

I know it would blow the plot away but was anyone else shouting at Rhaenys to just burn Aegon and the rest of them?!! I think she was showing some sort of respect for Allicent.
Yes! It would’ve saved a lot of lives further down the line had she done that but then there would be no war and no story. Though I think Rhaenys is too honourable to be a “kinslayer”. Such a badass though!

Do we have to put episode 9 comments in spoilers till after it's aired on Sky Atlantic? I will to be on the safe side!

I thought it was another great episode. All the plotting after the King's death and the frantic search for Aegon. I thought Aemond was going to kill him at one point (I haven't read the books!)

I thought they were trying to make the music reminiscent of the theme that played at the start of the episode where Cersei blew up the Great Sept.

I liked that Aegon's kidnapper did it with a noble intention in mind. I'm not sure if kids fighting was in GoT (I don't remember it) but it was another plot device that made that world seem even murkier than usual.

That said, I think they're laying on the disgust a bit too thickly with Larys Strong (aka budget Littlefinger - which I liked in a previous post). We get he's a creepy weirdo, but they had to add the scene with the feet to make sure we really got it... Not very subtle.

The finale with Rhaenys riding her dragon at the coronation was brilliant! Even though she obviously wasn't going to incinerate them, it was still a great spectacle. A far better way of signifying her decision than ringing a bell anyway.

Ser Criston is becoming even more of a dislikeable prick with every passing episode. I sensed he'd have loved nothing more than going to kill Rhaenyra and Daemon - though obviously he remains loyal to Alicent.

Even though both sides have done some crappy things, they've added some sympathetic parts to Rhaenyra and Alicent's characters. Neither are Cersei, which is good to see. I think we're 'meant' to be rooting for Rhaenyra, though, especially as Otto, Larys and Criston are on Alicent's side (well, kind of).

I really feel like the show is getting into its stride now. Roll on the finale next week!

(As a footnote the character names and spellings are so hard to get used to. I used Google a lot more than I should have needed to when writing this post 😂 )
