Holidays #4 2024 onwards

1
We are flying into LA next May, spending several days there then onto San Diego to stay with family. It’s a 2 week trip but my parents (who are flying out with us) & OH want to do a 1/2 night trip to Vegas. I have reservations as we’ll have our 7 year old with us.

Is vegas unsuitable for kids? Is it too much to pack into 2 weeks away with a child? In LA we’ll be doing Disney and Universal so full on at the start.

My parents are staying on an extra week after we leave so they have the option to visit however my OH is desperate to go. We want to start getting things booked/itinerary planned so I need to decide!
Not to be a debbie downer, but beware of "June Gloom" in SD - i had quite a grey cloudy trip there in June a few years ago

Would you feel left out if they went without you? Personally I don't really think Vegas is for children, it's very much geared towards grownups.
I'd compromise and tell them to go for one night whilst you and your child do something fun together. Plus this give's you a favour in your back pocket!
I agree, I can’t see what would be of interest to her there. My parents have been influenced by other family members and a recent Jane McDonald tv show as they were never keen before. They are happy to go once we’ve gone home however OH has always wanted to go so he feels I’m being unreasonable in saying no given we a short flight away. Saying that he plans to go with friends for their 50th (7 years to wait 😂 ) as they never made it for their 40th so I suppose he’ll have to wait.

Thanks for this! We were limited on dates as had to work with everyone’s work schedules (and combine alongside a half term) so it was either end of May or end of October so hoping it won’t be too bad!

Do you have any SD recommendations from your trip?

We did LA/Vegas/Santa Barbara earlier this year - not sure if you have time but 6 flags Magic Mountain was really good fun! Mixture of rides for all ages :) We also went to Santa Monica pier/beach for the afternoon which might be good for you all to do as a family.

I would say there are things for kids to do in Vegas but it is really more geared up as an adults playground! Especially if you only plan to do 1 or 2 days there, I feel you would be missing out on all the adult stuff. xx

Hi,

Khao Lak is such a fabulous place. You will love it. Where are you staying?
We go to Khao Lak every year as one of our friends runs a bar there (Chang Bar - Bang Niang - if you need anything call in as they are always so helpful).
We are going back in January for 10 nights. Staying in the Chong Fah beach resort in Bang Niang.
I would recommend doing one of the day trips to Khao Sok Park We did bamboo rafting down the river, the water isn't deep so it was just really relaxing. We then had lunch in the jungle looking out over it which was such an experience. Our driver took us to a market after and around some of the buddhas. We got to stop at a temple that had some wild monkeys outside.
Loo up Khai Andaman on Facebook as that is who we booked through. they will pick you up from the hotel and take you back.
Memories Beach Bar and Nong Prew Beach Bar on Coconut Beach are worth a visit. White sandy beaches!
The tsunami museum is worth visiting too - you get to see the police boat which is where it was washed up by the Tsunami and its very surreal just to see how far inland the Tsunami went.
The market do some fab mojito's!

In Bangkok I would recommend the Lebua State Tower - the views were something else!

edited to add - if you go to the La Flora hotel in Bang Niang you can book to go on a sunset cruise and it was the most amazing thing I have ever done. The sunset and views were amazing.
Thanks for the info! We’re staying at Le Menara, Coconut Beach was already on my list so appreciate the recommendations. Is there an ethical elephant sanctuary you would recommend? We’ll have a 4, 14 and 17 year old with us.

Thank you for this! There’s so much we’d like to do/see in LA that the San Diego leg was going to be more relaxed, so adding vegas in to the mix I think is too much. If we were child free it would be different 😅

When we did Khao Sok park, (it was either Khao Sok elephant sanctuary or elephant hills, I honestly can't remember the name) but the tour guide also took us to it on the same day. It was ethical, none of the elephants were chained and the only interaction with them we had was when we got to make their food and feed them which was pretty cool. Most of the elephants had been rescued from factories and circuses' and they had quite a bit of land to roam.

There is also an elephant sanctuary just a few mins walk from coconut beach so you will pass it on the way there :)

Sure it's just an excuse for the two of you to go back for a long weekend!

I agree Vegas is geared towards adults and the family friendly stuff has been gradually getting removed/replaced BUT I also think if it was to appease 3 other adults you can DEFINITELY find a way to kill a day or two with your kids.

Pick a hotel with a good pool set up for families - MGM hotel has a lazy river, M Bay has an artificial beach for example.

There's the rollercoaster at New York new York, zip lining and the lights at Fremont Street, gondola ride at the venetian, high roller big wheel at the Linq, Bellagio fountains, Eiffel tower viewing deck at Paris, madam Tussauds.

Then obviously you won't be going out clubbing but there's loads of family friendly options - or you could go to tournament of the kings etc.

You'll love it and your hubby can get a taster of what to expect for his 50th trip :)

@DWASN we watch a lot of Blippi in our house and there’s a video of a children’s museum there that looks pretty cool too, could be a good way to kill some time.

Oh wow this is fab! Thank you!

Would people recommend gran canaria for an easy winter sun holiday around February/March? Any recommendations for all inclusive hotels?

Has anyone ever booked an air BnB that's new? Opened this month so should have pics then we aren't going till late next year so should have plenty of time for pics and reviews and it's free cancellation. Do you think I should also book a back up place and keep an eye on the review of the new place? They are both free cancellation

Yes, I have, but like you I was booking some months in advance. I watched for the reviews to appear, and they did, and they were very good.

I had booked a cancellable apartment on booking. Com as a backup though which we didn’t end up needing!

The one I booked on air BnB ended up messaging me to say she accidentally confirmed and the booking should be live yet. She cancelled it which gave me £15 booking credit as well. Rebooked another and she messaged to say the price was wrong and the price ended up being a lot more
Found a third one which is confirmed is also new but t has one good review. I had already booked some ehre free cancellation on booking.com so I'll keep them for a bit just in case

Has anyone done any extreme day trips? I've looked at the FB groups and it seems exhausting/stressful but could be a good way to travel with limited annual leave at work.

I live an hour and 15 minutes drive from my nearest airport, and its a small one, so options are limited and the drive puts me off. If i was close (cheap taxi) to a busy airport id give it a go i think!

I joined. Facebook group for it. Always seemed interesting but never done one. I saw someone say easyJet or Ryanair changed her flight, was meant to go early morning they changed it to afternoon meaning she'd have had an hour in Paris before her flight home 😅
