I’d be so interested to see how much the LLs earn from books.

I remember the journalist Jon Ronson saying on a podcast years ago that it’s v hard to make any money, especially from non fiction and I was surprised as his books seemed very popular. Subsequently I found it weird that so many influencers, semi Lit Luvs wrote books because it’s a huge amount of work for what usually amounts to less than an average year’s wage.

I’ve read similar. Basically journalists are paid a fraction of what they used to be in the 80s. It’s nigh impossible to get a good income from a book.

this article sets out very well some of the issues in publishing, and how it excludes people of colour, disabled people, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds etc. It is basically still very much an upper middle class, middle aged, white, pursuit.

I was about to say this. I remember listening to it (it was Gannon's pod) and being so surprised as they act like they're NYT bestsellers!
I vaguely recall on one of their respective podcasts, Daisy Buchanan and Emma Gannon both lamenting the fact that their books didn't sell as well as expected, so I suspect it's actually the podcasting (ad revenue) and freelance bits that are keeping the coffers topped up.

It’s true, journalism is very low paid, even for titles like the Mail, compared to what the rates were before 2008. Esp for fashion magazines where people think everyone wears Prada but in reality they shop at sample sales or borrow stuff from the fashion closet.

I think publishers expect to tap into the influencers’ social media audience but are realising now that it’s not a guarantee of sales.

That newsletter is dire, v similar to Lucy Williams’ new one (non literary-luvvie influencer). A load of waffle then some ‘favourites’ that pitch them as some sort of fashion/beauty/lifestyle expert, but nicely opens the door for sponsored newsletters etc. Yawn.

You don’t need journalism or magazine fashion pages to sell products and a lifestyle any more, it’s all influencing :( Even fashion product writing is dying out as people don’t go on the actual website, just click through on ads. And nothing can be aspirational any more, it’s all got to be inclusive (I say this as a neurodiverse female, I know some inclusivity is good). It’s so sad, I grew up flicking through the glossy pages of Glamour and dreaming :)
Anyway probs more relevant to the magazine thread.

What I DO think is good is that being stupid isn’t aspirational any more and what gets you brownie points as a luvvie is talking about social world issues. The luvvie columnists of 2009 just banged on about relationships and hair removal etc :)

It sounds like a name that Private Eye would make up.
I am going to say this with a little trepidation and also not going back on YouTube to check: Sophia Money-Coutts is not a bad writer (outsider to the Literary Luvvie scene, perhaps) and comes across as solid & funny in an old doc series about Tatler, "Posh People". I think she is one of those "From Old Money, Men Gambled/Pissed It All Away" families?
Clearly I am a Tatler-obsessive. The old Bystander archives are an astonishing trove--a lot of extreme '80s-'90s wealth just partying their asses off.

Yeah I don’t mind her actually, she’s not obsessed with herself, doesn’t post stupid thirst trap selfies and try hard stories etc :) she wrote a great article about being in her thirties and not having had children and not being sure, but otherwise doesn’t bang on about the same old womens’ issues either

I did not need to see Dolly’s yellow toenails on my feed this morning 🤢

Elizabeth is having a laugh with those pink joggers.
Costing £295!!!!
As if she actually bought them. Wonder how the advertising thing works in newsletters, whether they can get away with pretending they were not gifted.

That newsletter is awful. Trying so hard to be funny. It’s like she is always walking on eggshells trying so hard for everyone to like her. Sets my teeth on edge.

she tries so hard to make everyone like her. just comes across inauthentic

Pandora's new podcast. The co-host seems like a random choice. Also the fawning comments. Do these women really get their only book recommendations from Dolly and Panda? Do they realize most newspapers have their own dedicated books section? No to mention booktube and bookstagram?

I have been a fan of Elizabeth Day for a long time but the innate people-pleasing has been grating on me more and more and more. I wish she would care less.

Does anyone listen to Best Friend Therapy? They were talking about professional value metrics today. Emma said hers was being busy with clients. Elizabeth's said hers was popularity! Oh dear...

I think Careering is her most recent? She seems like a nice enough person, not too annoying on Instagram 😂

Sorry usually a lurker here but I read this and there were parts of it I *loved* but it just didn’t go down the path I personally wanted and all ended a bit bubble gum happy? But then again I probably wouldn’t have been happy unless it went super dark and depressing as is the reality for most non nepo babies in luvvie industries 😂 I’d be interested to see what anyone on this thread thinks of it tho so maybe worth a read just for the chat!
