I imagine, especially from watching him in the jungle recently, that he’d be incredibly difficult to build a life with just on a basic level of how he operates as a person. He has spoken in interviews recently about the impact of growing up in a household with a parent addicted to heroin and how he struggles with structure or routine. He got incredibly upset and anxious at the thought that he might let down his campmates when being assigned jobs that should be well within an able bodied adult’s capabilities (washing up dishes) and catastrophised the situation massively. Whether or not this is how he was before he got cancelled is difficult to say, because I think he is very afraid of putting a foot wrong again, but it seems like chaos has been a theme.

When you layer onto that a drinking/partying lifestyle, close proximity to someone you’re attracted to, the ‘Strictly curse’ narrative that paints it as inevitable, none of what happened is surprising. I don’t condone what he did, but I think probably a lot of the people who cancelled and condemned him have done or will someday do something comparable or worse. Life is long and humans are fallible.

I don’t think RH’s statement made either party come off well. That she has continues to dwell on it years later when, really, most sensible people would reflect on how they were well shot of someone who didn’t treat them with respect and move on is very telling. These things have so much nuance but we’re pushed a narrative that tries to make them black and white, goodies and baddies. I bet most of the people who vilified him and continue to harp on about it have got #BeKind in their bios.

Another thing that colours my view is my own experience.

When I was in my early 20s I got into a relationship with someone who was abusive. It was something of a codependent relationship because my self esteem was on the floor.

I really wasn’t happy in the relationship, but he was so manipulative and controlling that I just didn’t know how to get out of it. A simple “I don’t want to be with you anymore” just didn’t work with him. He’d grind me down and wear me down until I agreed to stay with him. It wasn’t always just begging me to stay, it was a lot more subtle than that. Making me feel like no one else would care for em, using guilt so I’d feel too awful to leave such a wonderful caring guy who’d just do anything for me.

Maybe because my heart wasn’t in it, or maybe because I wanted to meet someone else, I developed an infatuation with a work colleague. And just like Sean, I ended up getting drunk and kissing this guy.

Unlike Sean I’m not a celeb so I didn’t get papped. so I admitted what I’d done to my ex (who then proceeded to use it as a weapon against me for the rest of the time I knew him).

When I finally managed to break free, my ex began a smear campaign. He was the victim. He was very good at making sure how everyone knew I was the villain in the scenario. as soon as he knew I had left the relationship and he’d lost control, he began a very subtle smear campaign against me resulting in my losing a lot of our mutual friends.

I really have to question Humphries motives in taking Sean over the coals. From my POV, she comes across EXACTLY as my ex did. As I said, my experience is colouring my perception so hey, I could be completely wrong. But that’s how Humprhies comes across to me. Like my absuive ex claiming he was the victim, when he really, really wasn’t.

I’m sorry that happened to you 😞

Anyone listen to Daisy Buchanan's podcast "You're Booked"? I love rooting around people's bookshelves so used to really enjoy it. Now the lineup is full of random dull people I've never heard of (other than lovely Malorie Blackman this season). A lot of them scream privileged literary luvs.

I still can’t believe Sophia Money-Coutts is a real person.

I know she can't help it but Daisy doesn't really have a voice that is naturally suited to podcasting.

There was a time when literally every guest mentioned the same 3 books: Ballet Shoes, The Cazalet Chronicles and Heartburn. So boring and such middle class English choices. Daisy’s own writing is so boring, it’s hard to believe she is doing so well with her novels but I suppose there must be a market for it as she keeps on going.

i’ve only read insatiable and really really didn’t like it. boring is absolutely the word i would choose for her style.

i was also convinced that “daisy buchanan” had to be a pen name but the fact it’s her actual name only irrationally annoys me more 🤣

I decided to read her book and it’s actually much better than I expected. I quite like her writing 😱

Not sure if it’s because I had v low expectations but it’s actually much better than a lot of the LL.

It’s very luvvie and there are bits where it’s clear there was an element of excitement for her when it all kicked off and knowing that she was being pushed into a bit of a spotlight and it was her chance.

So far it sounds like their relationship was all over the place and very unhealthy on both sides.

I also get why she would want to tell her side. She’s a whole person and it must be very hard to be reduced to the cheated on girlfriend, especially when you are pursuing an acting.

She's confirmed it is a pen name chosen in her early teen magazine days. An interesting choice.

I mean, FFS 🤣 I had this exact thought.

I vaguely recall on one of their respective podcasts, Daisy Buchanan and Emma Gannon both lamenting the fact that their books didn't sell as well as expected, so I suspect it's actually the podcasting (ad revenue) and freelance bits that are keeping the coffers topped up.

Is Daisy’s book not that good? I was thinking of getting it, I’ll avoid it now. This thread is v helpful 😃

No, you’re right, it is a pen name.

thank goodness! that confirms she is as pretentious as i thought (imagine picking the fictional representation of the american dream as your pen name 🤣 i guess she missed all the subtext with daisy and just assumed she was a cute flapper girl)

everything i found online seemed to say it was her real name, so thank you for this. i feel validated 💙

I’d be so interested to see how much the LLs earn from books.

I remember the journalist Jon Ronson saying on a podcast years ago that it’s v hard to make any money, especially from non fiction and I was surprised as his books seemed very popular. Subsequently I found it weird that so many influencers, semi Lit Luvs wrote books because it’s a huge amount of work for what usually amounts to less than an average year’s wage.

There’s a reason they all seem cut from the same ‘wealthy parents, literary heritage, privately educated’ cloth.
