Why does she think we care about him? Also, the raging body dysmorphia and disordered eating would be a huge red flag for me. Not a good environment to live in in my experience.
Literally made an account just to comment about this. I found their conversation so disturbing! He has a proper eating disorder and she essentially admitted to also having some sort of low-level eating disorder or body image issues (at one point when he was talking about his obsession with food & food guilt she said something along the lines of "oh yeah I relate to all of this"), but their response was essentially "well we're getting on with our lives so it's fine, we can't hope to address these issues."
I was actually gobsmacked at that. (I should not that I almost died from a severe eating disorder as a teenager so it's a topic i'm more sensitive to, but I'm recovered now and he sounded so incredibly disordered that I was really taken aback by how blasé they seemed about the matter). Surely the attitude of "oh well I guess I'm stuck with this" is counterintuitive to her podcast's whole overarching message of overcoming your struggles?
Idk I just found it quite a jarring and disturbing conversation.

Also the fact that he doesn't have or want friends is extremely strange.

Completely agree! And with how many references he made to therapy, you'd think he would've touched on it in therapy sessions?!

I feel for his kids tbh. My parents always marshaled food and had that same "earn your food through exercise" type of messaging. It's really awful to grow up with.

I think it was a misguided attempt at destigmatizing body image issues for men - but it would absolutely be a red flag for me and incredibly triggering to live with.

Also - and I have some experience with this - suffering with infertility and miscarriages while living with a partner and his THREE children is a uniquely challenging environment and set of circumstances to find oneself in. But he's obviously successful and she seems thrilled to have locked him down, so what do I know...

I don’t know how anyone can listen to HTF with ED talking about ED with a guest to hear about ED. I absolutely could not suffer husband … it’s all so entitled. With the comments here I know exactly every thing I need to.
Poor poor rich people and their problems (don’t have money issues so they will find others)

can’t wait till the ED deals with tattle podcast comes out

does anya Taylor effing joy count?

her parents aren’t in showbiz but are very wealthy and I’ve heard that’s why lots of doors have opened for her. I’m starting to get soooo fed up of seeing her in literally everything.

similar to Cara and Poppy Delevigne. Rich parents opened doors for them even if said parents don’t work in fashion.

is she a good actress or is she just in lots of good projects so we think she’s good?

feels a bit emporers new clothes to me. I don’t think she’s an exceptionally good actress. I just think she was able to be more selective with what work she took because she comes from money.

One of the best actresses I’ve ever seen was Natalie Dormer, a few years ago in a play. She was absolutely incredible. Probably the best I’ve ever seen. She was so charismatic and engaging. It was Venus in Fur and the chemistry between her and David oakes was incredible, I was disappointed when I found out she as engaged at the time to someone else. But apparently she’s just had a baby with David Oakes so my wish came true;)

It goes without saying but Jodie Comer is also exceptionally talented, and Lesley Manville is amazing. They just all have a very natural charisma.

When you see actors in a play, you really get a sense of who is truly amazing and who is just plain good. I’m lucky being in London that the theatre on offer is amazing.

I don’t think Saorise Ronan, Daisy Jones etc etc are especially good, I think they get hyped up because they are well connected and overexposed.

Daniel Radcliffe (bless his soul) has got to be the least talented nepo baby on the planet and has probably made the most money from acting. His acting has gotten to a point where it’s OK but he’ll never be exceptional or amazing. I think at least he knows he’s not great 😂

YES to Natalie Dormer and Jodie Comer! Dormer was phenomenal in The Tudors, which is like nearly 20 years old now and probably sounds like some fussy period drama but it's delicious once you move past the absurd casting of Jonathan Rhys Myers as HenryVIII. The show's creators really sexed it up in the best possible way (women are lusty and make things happen, it also I think does an okay job on same-sex male relationships) and the production values are top of the line. You really see what it was like to live in a world lit by candlelight. But back to Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn--her final appearances might have you on the floor sobbing. Same with another of the doomed queens--the "Tudor Ballet" sequence is another heartbreaker if anyone needs a good cathartic weeping session!
Jodie Comer was absolutely brilliant in Killing Eve, her first season on it is matchless.

It was announced years ago that Natalie Dormer was going to play Vivien Leigh in a new biopic. I would have loved that! I'm guessing it was binned?

Cara Delevigne has just been mentioned and I’d almost forgotten how a few years ago she was everywhere, not only with the modelling but all the appearances in movies and tv shows, including as a lead in Paper Towns. She can’t act for toffee, her attitude stunk and the entitlement just radiated off her, her press for Paper Towns was a massive own goal.

American movie makers wet themselves over British actors with “pedigree” how many chances has Cara been given despite limited talent a raging addiction problem and a propensity to look down her nose at everyone.

Also that Delevingne family is in Panda's orbit--she old pals with one of the other sisters, either Chloe or Poppy. (Coincidentally, the Delevingnes' mother is also named Pandora and she is supposedly an infamously reckless longtime partier. Was going to write her memoir at some point then either the deal got cancelled or she failed to deliver; there's a media story about it which seems like something planted for whatever reason). Same with Cressida Bonas's much-married mother--now there's a couple of 1980s-set miniseries I would very much like to watch.)

I do think Dolly is an excellent life writer. Everything I know about love (the book) was a smash hit for a reason. She's head and shoulders above the others in terms of talent and success. (Although I think Bella Mackie's book has done quite well too, but no one I know enjoyed it).

HOWEVER Dolly's novel Ghosts was awful, so boring. Being ghosted just isn't that deep, it's not a plot. If she wants to be Nora Ephron she should try doing some romance plots, try and write the 2020s you've got mail or something.

She sucks as an agony aunt too. Just very boring overall. She gives the impression that she just doesn't really know what to do next.

I thought the Everything tv adaptation was really toothless. They'd made the characters much less posh than they are in real life and much less ridiculous. They'd also added some diversity (obviously I am a fan of diversity in general, but to pretend this wasn't a story about a group of posh, entirely white, girls in London was ridiculous and insincere). It's like they just weren't willing to let the character, particularly the Dolly stand-in, be unlikeable. Someone asked why Fleabag was a success and Everything wasn't, and it's because they were willing to skewer the main character as much as anyone else. Being willing to explore the darkness and ridiculousness of people is where the humour and humanity comes in in stories like this. It was just toothless overall.

Welcome, great post! This thread is the best :)
Yes they explored the issue of race once with the Amara character confronting the Dolly character, but never class or privilege? Nell was Scottish so obviously came from a different background to the Sloaney pair, but that was never touched on in regards to how she felt about money etc. In real life they were ALL privileged :)

I thought Amara and Nell were way more interesting characters than Dolly/Maggie actually- the fact it had to be all about her as it’s Dolly’s book made it a bit insufferable.

Basically all the literary lovies and adjacent literary lovies are all posh - every time a new actor pops up I Google them and 99/100 they went to a private school. Something like 7% of the country are at fee paying schools - and 99% of the 'talent' on TV comes from this pool.

Jodie Cromer being one of the exceptions!

How do people feel about including Emily Dean in the LLs? Has she already been mentioned? She reminds me of a more confident Elizabeth Day.

I'm so bored of seeing the same names as quotes on books. Was looking at this as it's 99p but the same people talking about how they loved it has just put me off.

I don't trust their opinions, it seems like they'll just rave review other authors to get the same in return.

I just listened to that author on sentimental garbage (on a bit of a binge on their now) and she sounded sweet but so inarticulate. I can waffle with the best of them but she was off on so many umming and ahhing tangents even Caroline couldn’t keep up. Also that quote from Pandora is so pretentious. At least it’s clear she writes her own 😆

You can tell none of them have read it!

I’m surprised Marian Keyes didn’t review it. She pops up on every other book!

Oh gawd, just read again as felt like I was being mean and karma has already done it’s work with a ‘their’ instead of ‘there’. The woman is an idiot. The woman is me.

Has anyone read Rebecca Humphries memoir - Why did You Stay? - ?

I keep seeing it pop up because of Seann Walsh being on I’m a celeb. Any good? It was promoted through pandoras now defunct books and she did promo interview with her.

I have mixed feeling about that whole saga. I completely believe that he treated her like crap and was a tit but I also think that relationships can be toxic on both sides. I’m just wondering what he did.

I find it weird that some high profile comedians like Rob Beckett and Katherine Ryan publicly support him which makes me feel that either it got massively blown up and he felt he’d lost his right of reply or he’s changed significantly as a result. He never seemed to answer to any of what she said though which makes me think it was the former otherwise why would other comedians risk their profile in supporting someone who hasn’t been accountable for their actions?
