The Last of Us - HBO & Sky Atlantic

Oh God, my emotions cannot cope with this. It's like Game of Thrones, no bugger is safe! I hope he isn't dead, but figuring he is.

Also, cried at the scene in the bedroom, feeling so bad for Ellie when she said she had lost or been rejected by everyone in her life. Her relationship with Joel was getting to be so beautiful. I think he loved her in his own way.

If anyone needs to delete game-based spoilers after the delete period has passed, you can still report your own post to the mods and ask them to delete it :) they usually do it no questions asked

I don’t get why the bleeping fireflies can’t put “FIREFLIES NOT HERE AS OF (DATE)” somewhere obvious on the outside of abandoned bases etc.. So much tit seems to go wrong because they don’t bother telling people they’ve fucked off. Fair enough they might want it to become an automatic trap as unsavoury folk/infected set up shop in their old base, to finish off people looking to screw them over, but OMFG I just wanted Joel and Ellie to turn around and leave so bad once they saw there were no guards. They didn’t even learn anything about where the fireflies had gone next (or did they?)

That's what I did with my last post. Again, apologies to all you non game playing Tattlers.

As for your TLOU thoughts, I think
the firefly tags are to show it's their 'turf' and to warn unsavoury people off trying anything. One of my bug bears is considering we know radio systems work, you would think Marlene would've provided Joel with one so he can update them on their progress or get help if they needed it. Give him a list of channels to use along their route or something.
.

Finally got round to watching

the place where Tommy is is more similar to how it is in the 2nd game, rather than where Tommy is in the first game.

I loved the woman the beginning too, saying about the gun being all the way over there 🤣
Not ready for it to end

A doctor is doing a series on YouTube where he reacts to TLOU & its medical science, episode by episode. If you’re interested in this kind of thing I’d recommend it (contains spoilers). One thing I saw that was cool was that Joel was on the Atkins diet in Episode 1 which meant he avoided flour-based products. His daughter forgets to buy him a birthday cake and he forgets to buy the waffle mix, too. You can see in the evening when she’s home alone, she’s snacking on sticks of carrots etc.. She also turns down the cookies from the old woman because they’ve got raisins rather than chocolate chip.

He says he was on Atkins but yeah he could have been making it up to avoid getting the biscuits as he was happy to eat the waffles/cake (though inadvertently didn’t).

It’s not that Joel knew not to eat flour-based food. It’s just a clever thing from the writers to suggest subtly how he and his family managed through sheer luck to avoid getting infected when cordyceps had contaminated global wheat supplies etc, reinforcing the theory Joel mentioned earlier.

It shows how the writers considered all the little details. By picking something most people would eat daily as the vector while showing realistic ways theyd avoid eating contaminated food (a diet [and from there gluten intolerance]; forgetting to buy something; turning down cookies because you dislike them), it helps it feel more believable. It stops us thinking hey, there must be a fair few other immune people about, which makes the thing with Ellie feel like a bigger deal.

It’s cool world-building, sprinkled into the main action without feeling clunky. when I clocked it it made me think, huh, would I have gotten the infection from my food? What have I eaten over the past few days? I think it’s good writing :)

I got the feeling that the Atkins thing was just an excuse to decline the offer of food from neighbours he didn't particularly like

Yes I think the Atkins thing was just an excuse as he was in a rush and didn’t want to get caught speaking to the neighbours for a long time but also it was a good way of reinforcing what year outbreak day was set in as Atkins was a really popular diet in the early 2000’s. All the other things were clever little details as to why they weren’t infected as they didn’t eat anything containing flour that day.

Yeah I clocked that. Atkins was huge in 2003. Hot take? I prefer Outbreak Day in 2003, as opposed to 2013. I feel the actual passage of time compared to the game's 2033. We all to some extent remember 2003 etc. Its sadder to see the world frozen in time. I remember they had parodies of Twlight on movie posters in the game, It'd have been great to see Lord of The Rings posters around, showing that time literally has frozen.

I think this is obvious by Pedro’s subtle looks. He does a great job there by being like “yeah right no bleeping way do I want those” without being a total asshole to them outright.
