I just don't understand how it was more appealing to her to beg her relatively small (compared to a lot of influencers nowadays) for a few dollars each vs just trying to get consistent brand deals for hundreds or probably thousands of dollars.

She must have really thought hiding away in a safe space private group would inspire her creativity or something.

Her latest newsletter about speculative fiction was actually quite good. To give credit where it's due, she's definitely a step-up from most booktubers and it's refreshing to see her mention books I haven't heard of from mainstream booktubers and bookstagrammers.

But the whole thing about it being a "labor of love" and begging people to pay her! She wrapped up 6 books, that's probably doable for most readers in one month alongside a full time job. So I wonder once again, wtf is she doing with the rest of her time?

"But they are truly a labour of love with countless hours of reading, synthesising and writing so if you enjoyed it, please do consider becoming a paid subscriber. Or if you’re not ready for that kinda commitment, I also have a buy me a coffee page. Thanks so much!"

Also this line, which makes me wonder if the Times have gotten sick of her and sacked her. There's no way her lack of deadlines could survive at a newspaper:

"I was writing a version of this for The Sunday Times a little while ago but now I get to be as expansive as I like!"

Wait the buy a coffee thing is blowing my mind. At least the substack thing has the veneer of paying for a product. This is no different than street panhandling

Wow. Just wow. Imagine (up until recently) living in your mom’s multimillion £££ London home, having a giant £££ farmhouse, having nannies for you kid, never working a day in your life…all while having a “buy me a coffee” button. The amount of audacity and privilege is astronomical

I used to like her book content but then I read two books that she recommended and was bored to tears so I had to stop. I appreciate that she doesn't talk about the same books all over booktube but it's sooo boring how she talks about the same book for 10 minutes. It's not interesting.
And don't even get me started on the 'buy me a coffee'.... Maybe ask your mum for a coffee???
