That weird throuple thing that temporarily seemed to form is probably the most interesting thing Tom and Gi have ever done.

The weirdest thing about that was how Sara somehow managed to attach herself to the trio which I’ve never understood and was magically there with some spare trousers when needed

I always think it must be very heady for a celeb on Strictly. They have this pro, this person who is there just for them. They are their safety net, their support blanket, their coach, their psychiatrist all wrapped up in a cheerleading package. They coax them out to dance when they are terrified, they put them back together after a judges mauling and they tell anyone who will listen that this week they are going to be fab, they talk them down in a 4am phone call. For the length of time they are in the show, it’s the most important relationship they have … and for some that’s getting on for 4 months’.

Theres no wonder it can turn into a crush or more … but really the pro is just doing their job. After the final dance it’s ‘cheeribye, then’ (and in the case of James with Dr Pamela, change the phone number, the locks, grow a beard and buy many hats) and again for the celeb it must be like having the rug pulled from under them. I think quite a few struggle to let go.

it’s a very uneven, unreal relationship though … I imagine that any relationship that makes it after Strictly has to almost start again from scratch.

That must be a really heavy mental load for the pros, on top of the huge physical demands of the dancing. Which makes me think there is no way on earth the benched pros can or should get paid as much as those with a partner even though there has never been any implication that there’s a difference. And to think the judges get professional hair, makeup and styling to sit on their backsides for an evening of a saturday and get 10x as much

I know the Rose and Gio stans were insuffersble at the time but as we are talking about strictly couples falling in love, i do think they fell for each other in a big way but both knew it would never work outside of Strictly as they are from different worlds. And Rose is smart enough to know a player like Gio doesn't change his ways that easily! But for those few months I 100% think they were in love. Gio looked at her with pure awe all the time. They're one of my favourite strictly pairings ever! Beautiful to watch I've watching their dance to Symphonies countless times and I still cry as much as the first time

Aw I like John. I think he's just being honest about that weird in-between relationship that develops between pro and celeb. As people have said, we can all name umpteen examples of it.
I also can't imagine what doing Strictly would be like if you have an eating disorder: it's so exposing. Glad he is sober now.

I know the Rose and Gio stans were insuffersble at the time but as we are talking about strictly couples falling in love, i do think they fell for each other in a big way but both knew it would never work outside of Strictly as they are from different worlds. And Rose is smart enough to know a player like Gio doesn't change his ways that easily! But for those few months I 100% think they were in love. Gio looked at her with pure awe all the time. They're one of my favourite strictly pairings ever! Beautiful to watch I've watching their dance to Symphonies countless times and I still cry as much as the first time

like you say, the mental weight on the pros is huge. even if you get a ringer you’re still having to hype this person up, deal with the ups and downs, get really just involved in their lives for at least two months… it’s crazy. and if you get a needy partner or a difficult partner then even more so!

His first 3 partners were Catherine, Caroline & John, I bet having Ellie was a treat for him after those 3. Especially since we've now seen the true colors of Cath in particular.

i absolutely think that’s what he meant - he was just too polite to actually say so having ellie must have been an absolute breath of fresh air!

exactly! they get paid the same so if i had the choice between a will (as an example) or a krishnan then i’m picking krishnan every time

on the other side i think it must be tough to partner someone who is continually getting torn to shreds by the judges even if they are doing it out of joy. you could see it really started exhausting katya with tony last year.

I think if a celeb just accepts Strictly for what it is and know full well that your tenure is storyboarded as ‘pre-Blackpool’ then it must make it easier for all concerned. Practice, but not twenteen a day until bits drop off and keep a balance. Ellie struck me, a bit like Chris Ramsay, who’d got the measure and perspective of it. And no licking.

same. if anything there was a sibling vibe imo, like a little sister teasing her big brother who thinks he is the heartthrob of the school i liked their dynamic for that reason, and because she always sort of brought gio down a peg or two. he was the most likeable he’s been with her, but i definitely saw no romantic chemistry.

Last year was a weirdly intense bunch - I'd say only Nikita & Johannes had a relatively easy time with their celebs. Dianne seemed to get on with Tyler nicely and he didn't seem to have much baggage but even he had a nightmare schedule. I suppose Kai didn't have much time with Kaye and can barely remember James & Amy now. All 10 others I think had some trouble along the way, including the finalists.
