I don’t enjoy the show as much as I used to probably because it has strayed way too far from its original concept. It was a dance competition based on Latin/ballroom. Now it seems that anything goes - C.C. with no elements of any recognised Latin or ballroom dance and barefoot interpretive wafting/running around for example.
Also the opening group dance at the start of ‘both’ nights could do with reining in.
Watching a host of world champion ballroom/Latin professionals perform a non specific dance, wearing some sort of themed costume to fit in with whatever random song the producers have chosen, seems a bit of a stretch. Much preferred the old days when the pros would perform a recognised dance, with no themed scenery, wearing the appropriate outfit for either a ballroom or Latin group number. It showed their skill, artistry and how the chosen dance should look when performed by professionals.
A few weeks ago I was looking at group opening dances from the past and came across a jive from 14 years ago to Rebel Yell. Everyone is in traditional jive wear dancing on an undecorated set. So easy to watch and appreciate all the steps. (The singing isn’t too bad either compared to what we get nowadays!)
Any long running show has to move with the times and aim to stay fresh, but most of the changes are a step too far for me.
