As others have said, the ratings are holding up pretty well in an era of delayed viewing etc. Also there is probably a factor with people not being sure yet that it is on after the delays due to the queen etc.

But even if there is a chunk of the population refusing to watch because they are outraged that a paralympian is on, or because two men are dancing together, what odds? Why should the show cater to a few bigots and narrow-minded folk?

One of the great things about Strictly, or any popular culture thing really, is its ability to mainstream certain ideas and positions. When I looked at the Rose/Gio FB page the other day which has a very heavy boomer vibe, there was a discussion about this, and lots of these older ladies (some 80+!) were saying they were fine with it. Worth losing a few viewers over.

I used to be one of those people who wished there were two Strictlys a year.
I started itching to know the line up in June and felt impatient from that moment until the announcements began.

This year, I wasn't excited to hear the line up.
Why? Because I have realised I can enjoy the show more if I don't know who is on it.
Also, I learned that I prefer it when I still don't know who they are after the announcements.
I can get to know them as the weeks go by and I enjoy that more.

Having said that, when the show started this year, I actually forgot to record or watch it.
I have now seen both episodes via I player.

Now I remember why I am no longer as eager as I used to be to watch it.

One of the singers has a voice that spoils my enjoyment of the live music.
Jason Gilkison's choreography in the group numbers spoiks my enjoyment, too. I find his routines crowded, messy and unimaginative.

I know this is just my personal feelings, but I just thought I'd post anyway to put forward my reasons for not watching because my reasons are different to those suggested up thread for the dropping off of viewers.

If they replaced that singer and if they replaced that choreographer, I would probably get excited and eager to watch it again.

Nah I agree with you on both the singer and Gilkisson. When the songs get announced, we shouldn't have to be thinking "oh no, she's gonna murder that high note".

Exactly this, couldn't have said it better myself. My friend who I watch it with is a 78 (and still partying) and she was a bit iffy about same sex partnerships because it wasn't "the done thing" but absolutely adored John and Jojo last year.

Most people are able to keep an open mind and enjoy any two people dancing together. You know what they say - you can get with the times or get in the bin.

Always - but as they’re aiming to cast people known to a wide range of the public, there are only so many occupations they can draw from. 🤷‍♀️

Maybe one year they’ll cast a really famous chess grandmaster? 😁

Oh, yes please!

Have you SEEN the scandal that is rocking the world of chess at present? I can't even say in polite company what World No 1 Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen is accusing his young opponent of! The link is below, but suffice to say: he seems to believe Hans Niemann won his match via a cheat of a rather startling nature.

Chess is a lot crazier than you think.

I hate both of those things too (in fact I think most people would agree with you on both.) Luckily for me, it doesn't majorly affect my enjoyment of the show overall. Wishing the pro routines were better choreographed is my main disappointment/annoyance with the show, and my fave pro leaving has also made me a bit less excited than last year, but I'm still excited to watch. (not that I can help with the ratings though, lol)

I tried muting the sound when that singer sings but I LOVE the live band so that didn't work.
She really, really spoils it for me.
I wish they'd replace her.

The singers aren't as good now they've let Lance Ellington go.
He made them 'up' their game, I think.

That opening number on Sat, for me was a crowded noisy mess.

If they make any changes, they need to get a more innovative and exciting choreographer and swap that female singer.

Fully agree about the singers and Jason Gilkinson. I also feel like Strictly took a wrong turn when they decided to go down the X Factor route - overly emotional vts, endless talk of “journeys”, wheeling out elderly relatives for sympathy votes etc 😴

I do still love it though and I think getting Nikita, Carlos and Vito is probably the best thing the producers have done in years. They definitely bring a freshness imo.

This series is two episodes in and already dying with the wokeness turning people off. The ratings are down a lot from the same episodes last year. This isn't a group of girls or boys in a club dancing with their mates. It's professional dancing and it's known for men and women dancing with one another. It's not homophobic to say it. Same sex couples won't work and will only harm ratings. Ellie I am sure she will give it her all but she will struggle in hold and Nikita will end up with a bad back from crouching more than a jockey does. The line up is really poor too. They always have come out last who the producers see as the star of the series and so it's been Matt Goss. Most famous for a 35 year old song wrote by two guys for him and his brother and has been hidden out of the limelight in America for most of the time since.
Have to disagree with you on a lot of counts there. There are actually lots of same sex dance partners in professionally dancing competitions and have been for a long time.

It's positive to see people who are deaf or differently abled on a show like this. It means a lot to people watching at home who feel they don't see people like themselves in the media.

And this season is the first season in a long time where I know most of the people. I don't know Molly or Hamza, but the rest of them I'd at least be aware of. That's way beyond the last few years for me at least.

I know! I’m obsessed with this story, I think it’s the whole reason chess popped into my head when I was trying to think of a ‘selectively famous but not generally famous’ occupation! 😱😱😱
