Rose Ayling-Ellis and John Whaite hit back at claims Strictly is woke

The actress, 27, who is deaf, won last year's series with Giovanni Pernice and responded to an article that argued Strictly has become a 'woke box-ticking exercise'.

This series is two episodes in and already dying with the wokeness turning people off. The ratings are down a lot from the same episodes last year. This isn't a group of girls or boys in a club dancing with their mates. It's professional dancing and it's known for men and women dancing with one another. It's not homophobic to say it. Same sex couples won't work and will only harm ratings. Ellie I am sure she will give it her all but she will struggle in hold and Nikita will end up with a bad back from crouching more than a jockey does. The line up is really poor too. They always have come out last who the producers see as the star of the series and so it's been Matt Goss. Most famous for a 35 year old song wrote by two guys for him and his brother and has been hidden out of the limelight in America for most of the time since.

i disagree, respectfully. I think die hard fans get too caught up in little things when the majority of the viewing public want to watch a bit of fun and escapism on a cold Saturday night and don’t care if a particular pro has been benched or what running order they dance, they just wanna be entertained. A bit like why the masked singer/dancer had done well cos it’s daft fun for a Saturday night that you half watch while eating a takeaway. Most people don’t care if Ellie is in proper hold if she does a dance that they enjoy, same with a same sex couple. If you enjoy it you enjoy it no point getting all hung up on technicalities. It’s a popularity contest and it’s tv…its Not world champs at the tower ballroom xxx

i get such good vibes from their partnership. Think it will bring out the best in both of them and karen will relish having a totally new challenge after all these years, if she could make posh reality ‘unlikeable on paper’ Jamie Laing fun and lovable and play to his strengths I can’t wait to see what she can do with jayde that has natural talent xxxx

I agree - I think they have some of the best chemistry out of all the couples this series

Tbh honest, I'm not sure Jayde is going to be as amazing as I originally thought, but I do think they'll have an ok run - hopefully they will get to do their couples choice

Jayde and Karen seem to get on really well from what I’ve seen so far, along with Ellie and Johannes & Hamza and Jowita. Everyone else seems to be fine and I would probably pick Nadiya and Matt & Gio and Richie as a bit more politely doing their job (not in a feud way, just a bit less general rapport).

I notice after his ITT piece to camera Gio decided to further put the rumours to bed by… sharing a picture of himself in his suit rather than him and Richie

I would add Helen and Gorka and Ellie S and Nikita into the getting on really well mix. I haven’t seen Gorka this happy on strictly for ages. And maybe Tyler and Dianne in the politely doing a job mix but maybe that is just that Diane is cross about him doing the marathon

Ah, Dianne don’t be cross. It gets you a couple of free pass weeks … I can’t see him being anywhere near the bottom this week anyway and if he does struggle next week he’s go the whole run the London Marathon for Charity storyline (tsk whatamIlike, thought it was 20k , like you do) to take up the slack.
(As long as Helen is gagged and locked in the stationery cupboard with just a muffled 3 in 3 days coming through the cracks).

Same here - maybe last week she was hampered by first-night nerves, but I fear I may have put too much faith in a comedy skit from a decade ago!

Still love them as a couple though. And theirs is the rare case where I’m actively wanting to see a CC as I think it will be tremendous fun and a lovely tribute to her sister (a sister who is actually no longer here, rather than merely appearing in an Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical )

She really didn’t make Jamie Laing either fun or loveable, he came over as his usual ultra irritating self and I hated all their dances. Not her fault though

I enjoyed Jamie & Karen’s partnership, which surprised me as I’d never heard of him before he was on it and I wasn’t keen on Karen at the time.

I was all set to dislike him based on first impressions, but he put the effort in, didn’t take himself too seriously, and they seemed to get on well.

I didn't mind Jamie and Karen. I generally enjoy Karen's partnerships as she seems to bond with her partners in a very genuine way and make sure they're enjoying the experience above everything.

I'm not sure we can write Jayde off just yet, though she perhaps won't be as good as we thought. Personally don't think she'll be first out but who knows?

Agree about James and Matt being in danger. I like James but he's giving me Katie McGlynn vibes (just not memorable enough) and I think unless Matt has a great week, the voters aren't going to warm to him (can't see him twerking his way up the leaderboard like Judi did in wk 2 last year)

Thinking about this week, what if the week 2 redemption Charleston saves Tony and/or Kaye? Who will be in the dance off then?

I suppose it depends on the leaderboard and how many ties … so far there at least 5 score ties which could mean even the top reaches of the board enter into vulnerable territory

I think James has enough of the 'entertaining bloke' market to be safe for a few weeks. Matt is just an oddball.

I thought Tony looked deeply uncomfortable and his posture was very poor unfortunately plus, whilst he’s a well known name, I’m not sure there’s that much cross over with strictly voters, unlike Kaye who’s LW fans will be bigger voters
