Yeah it seemed a long time to stay in the one place but it all worked out. I suppose they got some work in as well so it wasn’t a huge waste of time.

I think the boys found it tricky in the previous week, catching loads of different buses to get to the animal sanctuary, and spending loads of time waiting at random bus stations, So I think waiting made an awful lot of sense...especially when they came in joint second!

I like the boys best, then the brother and sister... The poor mother of the mother daughter pairing, the daughter is such hard work, she is so dismissive of her mother!

it’s a shame this year’s contestants are much less likeable compared to the previous series. I loath Eugenie and Isabella. Esp. Eugenie with her constant sulking, moaning and whining!
I think I like the siblings best. They don’t seem as rude as others.
But it’s a shame they couldn’t find a nicer lot for this year’s programme overall.

Is it just me who thinks Isabelle whines more?
Her mum wants to do some activities not race related and Isabelle is constantly complaining about how it's a race

The daughter is awful. I can't see how some are seeing her mum as a narcissist because she seems to be reacting to her fun-vacuum of a daughter. If she explains herself she is wrong, if she stays quiet she is wrong. If she has any kind of opinion she is wrong.

That girl must have eye strain the amount she rolls her eyes. She has zero respect for her as a human being.
The surprise when she learned about her mums pre-child adventures was almost laughable - how have they not shared this already? (I've bored my kids rigid with tales of my global adventures in the hope it inspires them to do similar).

As for the constant jibes about her age, she's 60 ffs! Hardly frail and elderly!

Ooo I really don't like her. One positive it makes me realise I've got a really
good relationship with my 20 year olds in comparison!

I agree that both daughter and mother are completely at fault here - I stand by her mum 100% being a narc because her responses to her daughter, are that of a 10 year old child. I can't remember an exact quote but alot of her responses were on the lines of 'oh right I guess that's my fault then fine' and then stormed off?

Thank duck they're not getting taxis everywhere like that bloody father in Canada he was a right whopper!

Tbh I thought she was younger than 60, in her 50s probably I was surprised when she said 60

I don't see how those type of comments make her a narc? Quite common saying when you're constantly blamed for everything

I'm not defending the way Isabelle speaks to her mum, but it does make make me wonder why she's so resentful towards her - there was a bit in the first or second episode where Eugenie was talking about her sons and her face lit up because she said something like, her son's always agreed with her and thought she was great whereas (I'm paraphrasing a bit), but Isabelle didn't (and then her face fell again as soon as she started talking about Isabelle). And that rang a few alarm bells for me

But I can definitely see both sides. And also, not that unusual that any parent and offspring would get irritated by each other in this situation 😆

I'm surprised we've not had more of a backstory about Eugenie and Isobel yet. But maybe there isn't one and they're just like that. Race Across the World shouldn't be a replacement for a therapy couch though.

Travel can be though, it can be a great bonding experience, learning and understanding. Time away from normal life to think, get perspective, and talk.

But, like therapy, the minds have to be open to it

I find her very self centered and unable to see outside her viewpoint. She can't even imagine that her mother has been anything other than a mother and is just past it now anyway. It might be poor editing but she doesn't come over aylt all well.

It’s also really common for very self-centred people in order to guilt the other party into feeling bad. Martyr complex, everything is always against them and they’re always being blamed for everything even though in reality that’s not true. Her daughter is allowed to be frustrated by things and the incident I recall wasn’t actually blaming her mum, her mum just responded to the vent as if she was.

I think both of them in this case have serious issues though - who knows what the balance is like in real life but it seems totally unhealthy.

So glad I’ve found this thread!

I’m rooting for Alfie & Owen, they seem nice, interesting lads with a maturity above their years (most of the time). Alfie talking about losing his mum when he was little really got to me (I lost my dad when I was 4 so it struck a chord) bless him, the lantern scene was really lovely and I hope the experience helps him open up more. So glad they managed to catch up that time gap.

I quite like Betty James now, thought they were going to get on my nerves a bit, but I’m glad he’s starting to embrace the experience more (I need to go back and watch the bit about his cricketing career ending as I was distracted).

Eugenie & Isabel… I thought I was going to like them a lot at first but the bickering and eye rolling is tiresome (100% this years Kevin & Claudia, spot on whoever said that earlier inthe thread).

Stephen & Viv, well he’s finding new ways to irritate me every week! I’m sure he’s lovely but unfortunately he’s just got one of those personalities that get on my nerves/make me cringe into orbit. Viv I much prefer, her diving accident story was terrifying, I’m so glad she’s ok, and to his credit I’m glad she’s got Stephen looking after her as he seems a good egg under the bravado.

I personally think most of the fault lies with Eugenie. She overreacts to everything and takes everything as criticism of her. I have to say my mum is a bit like this hence why my sympathy is with Isabella. Though they are both quite unlikable overall. But Eugenie wins the whining race (‘I’m tired’, ‘I’m hungry’, ‘I’m uncomfortable’) for sure!
However, we don’t know how much this is just editing. I’m not a fan of the way everything is structured this year. Too many sob stories and they keep on jumping about in the map without showing the little details such as what they eat, where they sleep, etc. For me, traveling is about the little moments which are missing from this year’s series.

I completely agree. It’s like they’ve lost the things that made it so good, and the editing seems pretty jarring in places this year particular (obviously I know it’s always edited!).
