Probably an unpopular opinion but I think asking Trish and Cathy about racism in the context of this programme is really unfair.

if Ladi and Monique experienced racism that affected their race, that’s completely out of T&C’s control. I mean, what are they meant to do? Agree that racism impacted L&M, meaning that they don’t deserve their win?

if racism meant L&M waited longer for lifts, and let’s be honest, nobody actually knows how long each team had to wait apart from the producers, then that is a bigger issue for the bbc to sort in terms of how they organise these races. Do black people get a head start over white people? Should there be an all black teams race? And an all white teams race? Where do mixed race people fit in? And if a white team wins over black teams, is it only their win because they are advantaged for being white or is it only an issue if they win when they are unpopular vs the black team.

My OH said exactly this when I mentioned it to him tbh. Unless there was more overt racism which we didn't see. They all seemed to get similar knock backs.

My issue was the fact she didn't even entertain it. Didn't say 'We didn't witness that but obviously if they said it there must be an element of truth'. You simply can't dismiss out of hand something out of your own experience, any more than men dismissing things that happen to women. Imagine if when the two women kept saying 'as older middle aged women you become invisible and ignored' and one of the men said 'no no that doesn't happen. Hasn't happened to me'.
I get she was put on the spot. And as you say maybe thought the implication was they had an unfair advantage and didn't deserve their win.

Yeah, it’s a really weird question to put someone on the spot with and I agree the implication probably came across to them as being “Do you think you won because you’re white?”.

I do think Ladi and Monique experienced racism but I don’t think that was the only factor in the lifts, Trish and Cathy were both female and middle aged which in some ways would have helped but maybe put off some lone men picking them up, and the two lads would have struggled more than the dad/daughter teams in some situations. Plus it’s not an “honest” hitch hiking experience when they’re clearly accompanied by a member of camera crew, maybe some people were put off by that. Zainab admitted in the after show her resting witch face probably didn’t help too.

There are loads of reasons each team would have to struggle overall, so I think it probably evened out especially with the sight differences giving them a disadvantage on all the navigation things and some of the jobs they could do.

If you listen to the woman’s hour interview, you’ll hear the tall one denying that there was any racism. She said “I don’t think it made a difference what colour skin we have”, which is something she’s not in a position to comment on.

Reading your post, there is clearly a lot of work to be done in this area for many of us.

Yes at some point they have to say ‘actually it’s not two of us but three of us and one of us will have a camera’

Or they get them to agree to the lift for three first ‘but would you mind if we ask you again on camera but we will say there is two of us’

🤣🤣

She was probably on the defensive though because what is the question implying? They didn’t deserve the win? L&M were only 2 hours behind them.

and what is wrong with my post? I’d be interested to hear how this race can be made fair if racism is a factor that prevented L&M from winning.

I honestly think his wife meeting Trish and Cathy and seeing the cameraman etc was what swung it for them on that final lift. I don’t think they’d have got it without the story and the camera crew at all, but it’s an even playing field for them all on that.

They won because they took a risky set of gambles and they paid off, it could just have easily ended with them being hours behind… and if it had ended in the three teams being off the same boat and similar lift times and physically running for cape spear, they wouldn’t have stood a chance would they 😂

I always wonder about this! And when there's only 2 places left on a train or something- is the cameraman allowed to just squeeze on without buying a ticket? Must make finding accommodation more difficult too...

It’s not just the whole have you got space in your car for 2 more people that gets me, often you see footage in the car and then video clearly filmed from a vehicle following the car.

At times there must be two production crew with them and if it’s so much work arranging a lift how do they manage to follow on?

I would apply just to find out the logistics but my dogs would be pissed at being left for 8 weeks, mind you not as pissed as the production crew having to edit out all the swearing between me and my husband!

Found their IG and think my answer, looks like two production team members, which means those random car journeys can’t have been done singly particularly with all the rucksacks etc

Jen from season 2 said that if a bus or train didn't have space for the production team then they had to wait for the next one that did as they weren't allowed to travel on their own. They didn't find it unfair as all couples had the same rules so it evened out. I wonder how much of this season was scripted to take this into account. Zainib and Mobeen waited around to see if any bus passengers didn't turn up and the worker said there were two free spaces left. So where did the camera crew sit 🤔

Could it be only one is with them at a time? Surely they have shifts and if for example some spent 6 hours looking for a lift and then a long car journey then one will go with them whilst the others having a break?

I have just met someone and we talked about the programme. We were talking about would we do it. He said he had a client who has filled in an application for the next series. They said they don’t think they will get on because it’s clear they want a back story and they don’t have one, they just want to be in a race.
A lot of the backstories seem fabricated to some degree anyway. Like the Brother & Sister from series 2 who apparently never talked but it was clear they were pretty close before from social media. The Lad & Dad from series 1 who had 'drifted apart' because he'd moved down the street for 18 months or something. Also the Brothers from this series clearly never had a close relationship before the Dad died - they were obviously chalk & cheese and the Brother who stayed in all the time probably had some form of autism.

I apologise for the rant, 12hrs on I’m still pissed on behalf of Monique and Ladi (and to a lesser extent Mobeen and Zanaib)
[/QUOTE]

Totally agree with your whole rant. I really disliked this pair, particularly the way they took pleasure in others misfortune, all the fake hugging, the patronising way they spoke to people, and how delighted they were that Kevin and Claudia had to drop out etc etc etc. They’ve irritated me since the start, and there was definitely something super-suspicious about that last overnight stay and lift…offered a share of the £20k do you think???

I mean Kevin and Claudia got given a car by someone to drive a long way and then used it even longer than originally expected. The uncle who drove with them didn’t originally say he’d do it but once he met them and they asked he agreed. What I thought was weird about it is wouldn’t Kevin have needed insurance to drive or is it different in Canada?? It’s not like it was a hire car.

Yes the way they congratulated each other when things went bad for others was unpleasant. Did the other couples do it so much? Tbf I don't really remember - they might have done.

Genuine question, even if it did turn out they’d offered them a share of the £20k, do you not think the other two couples would have done the exact same in that situation? Ladi in particular was saying how competitive he is all through, and the other couples were all going round everyone on the boat and any of them could have had a bung to drive to St John’s. How did Z and M find the first person off and get him to drive them?

If they did promise them something if they won, all the couples had that option open to them.
