I think that the production set up a lot of the conversations and rides. It didn’t feel like they had gone through the mill like previous series. I am quite a cynical person but the amount of goodwill was extreme, particularly in the latter stages. All the drives. Nothing is organic on tv anymore, it’s all designed and directed.
This is why I can't get excited about a celebrity version- it will be 10x more scripted

I think in the French part there was absolutely racism, especially towards Monique and Ladi and I’m sure generally Trish and Cathie would have had a slightly easier time hitchhiking (partly racism, partly because two ladies in their 40s just will).

They all got some really lucky lifts and stays so I think it did even out over the course of the series. With Trish and Cathie’s last one, it seemed like it was the wife who changed her husbands mind? He said he couldn’t but after they’d been chatting, she was the one who said “We’ll take you” and basically volunteered him for it so I don’t think bribery was involved as much as his wife decided she liked them and they were going to do it.
It probably was, but I did also see people who live (or lived) in Quebec say that a lot of people there are just like that to any English speaker so the two combined probably made it worse for Ladi/Monique.
I thought overall it seemed from the editing at least that Claudia/Kevin had the worst luck with hitch hiking. I’m sure there was multiple times they spent 6+ hours waiting. Although that could’ve just been as Claudia made a big deal out of it each time and just didn’t want to do it (and then Kevin would find a taxi 😄).

The day before when he came back and said ‘the boss said I can’t take you’ and then offered his place was ‘the boss’ the wife? Would make sense if then she did change her mind once she’d met them and they probably then explained what they were doing. I think spending time and then explaining would be what would convince me

One thing I don’t understand why teams didn’t do more is ask people they met to post on them car sharing groups online for them? As at least one couple (Zainab/Mobeen?) knew that was a thing as the hostel lady did it for them at the start. I know that the couple said they’d do it for Trich/Cathie to try and avoid taking them but none of the couples actually asked for anyone to do it.

I think Claudia and Kevin’s attitudes really went against them with the hitch hiking, once they’d had a couple of no she seemed to get worked up and sulky and he got to the “let’s just get a taxi” point and I reckon that put people off! Especially when they’d be arguing with themselves and then seemingly go to ask someone, if you’d seen them bickering you wouldn’t want that in your car for 6 hours!

I assumed he meant his wife and that was what changed it for them, plus she’d have seen it was legit when the camera person turned up with Trish and Cathie - she probably thought he was off his rocker when he just said about the women 😂

The editing at the end was really annoying. Also meh winners.

I think the second series was where the oh so convenient things started happening but this time they just hit you over the head with a sledgehammer with it. I think with the editing it tried to hide how far people were actually being driven and how they were able to throw away a whole day on it for strangers.

Maybe some of the teams would have completely fucked it up in the first 2 weeks without the help of production stepping in or something

People would be more willing to help Ladi and Monique (any racism aside) because they they had open faces, they radiate nice. Claudia just looked like a sulker. Who would want to share a car with her glowering for hours on end. Zainab had the most deadpan face which would be offputting to me, but Mobeen had that same open face which offset his wife’s.

Rather dodgy interview with the winners on Woman's Hour this morning.
I can't remember which of them is the taller one, but when the interviewer asked if they had an advantage over the other couples as they were white, she completely denied that as a possibility. Even though Ladi and Monique had explicitly said there was racism she just poo pooed it. Surely you have to acknowledge other people's experience and perception? Though she did then say as middle aged white women they were not at all 'threatening'. FFS.

They had the personalities of wet flannels so can't see them doing the media rounds for long.

Disappointed with who eventually ended up winning and I don’t see how they did it! My OH was able to work it out by the “time of day” in the sky who the winners were
The shorter of the two women was far from stupid, she will have worked out the timings re what time the next ferry arrived and the time it took to drive from there. She was looking remarkably calm on their last drive bearing in mind how controlling she had been previously. She’s a pharmacist so presumably good at math.

Looking back she clearly knew they would have arrived in the town at the same time the ferry docked, I also agree she and/or the production crew bunged that couple some money to get up at 5am to make it happen.

I may be spending too much time stewing over the outcome!

I can't quite feel happy for them though

ETA: I can't decide which of them I find more annoying

Ugh; shut up Cathy/Tricia (not 100% sure which one is which either).

Whoever it is has resolved my dilemma above!

Gutted to only just find this thread.
However, Cathie truly reminds me of Mr Toad from Toadhall and I've not been able to unsee it all season.

I think they are told to run to make it seem like it's more of a race when they edit it.

I just finished watching it and I was a bit disappointed that Ladi and Monique didn't win as I truly believe they deserved it. He is an amazing, supportive father and she did a lot of growing during this process, much more than any of the other contestants. I'm still happy for Trish and Cathie of course. They must have been quite far ahead to have gone the long way around and still won. The editing annoyed me this season because you couldn't tell who was really ahead. I suppose that's the point but even at the end they didn't say how much they won by in terms of hours.

I think overall this season was much more boring than the previous two and I think production planted people to help as there's no way you'd drive a stranger over 100 miles for basically nothing. I think the editing was also done to make things seem more exciting/teams being closer to the finish than it actually was. I'm hoping next season is better - I'd like to see a Europe one or maybe India. They need more varied options because when they all end up on the same bus or train it's so boring.

I came here to talk about the woman’s hour interview. I didn’t mind that Cathy and Trish won until I heard the taller one (sorry can’t remember which one she is) totally denying that Ladi and Monique experienced any racism. First of all, she wasn’t with them and, second of all, it’s not for her to say whether another person felt discriminated against. She came across as totally ignorant and I am annoyed that they won now.
