One Day - Netflix Series

Yep I think some of the shortcomings are with the general premise rather than the actors, IMO, I found the format with the skipping the majority of the year meant we didn’t really get to see any depth to their relationship. Dex was a rich drunk and Emma came across as a bit judgemental but I think we saw her grow.

I'm only on episode 6 but I think I'm watching something different to my friends. They're all talking about how wonderful it was but it's missed the mark massively for me, at least so far anyway.

Soundtrack - where were all the Madchester tunes and 90s bangers?
Nostalgia - in many ways it could have been set at any time (eg the clothes could have come from any era).
Chemistry - I didn't see much between the two and didn't get how they would possibly stay in touch. He seems like a one dimensional rich boy and she seems quite critical. It's not like they brought out other sides in each other.

It seemed quite naive - loved how his Mum told him how lucky he was but needed purpose but can't believe the parents were fans of Emma (at least initially anyway) - you can guarantee a working class girl with brown skin would not have been welcomed by a family like that in the late 80s.

I loved the premise and the feel of it. I can tell one of them is going to die but I'll keep watching.

It's made me want to read the book anyway, which is probably the best outcome!

Watched this last weekend. Never read the book or seen the film but I enjoyed this for what it is. I could tell from episode 10? 12? That it wasn’t going to be a happy ending so that wasn’t shocking.

One thing I’m still confused about, why did Tilly invite Dex to her wedding? And Callum? It didn’t seem like they were actually friends at uni and Emma wasn’t talking to him at that point. Did she want them to make up? Just seemed very random.

I think because we’re only seeing one day out of their lives each year over a period of time, we don’t get to see everything else that has gone on around that. It’s possible they were friends through Emma and stayed in touch.

Yes it wasn't clear but I thought the same. There was a lot that happened in those days between that we didn't see.

I didn't understand something at the end actually.

The scene on the steps where they kiss, did that actually happen? Or was it a sliding doors moment where if they had of kissed then their lives would have panned out very differently?

Desperately searching tattle to find a thread as I’m still not over this series which has done something to my soul 😂 I never cry at films / TV but this …what’s it done to me 😂

Interesting about the sliding doors aspect as I also wondered did this happen or what could have happened. I lost interest at times but the Chemistry kicks in from the maze and then i couldn’t stop watching

I tried watching three times and kept starting over each time, but I honestly can’t click with this show. I got as far as episode 4 and stopped. There’s something about it this show that makes me lose interest really quickly and I wind up looking at my phone instead. I just can’t get into it.

It really really drags in places especially in the beginning, I very nearly gave up on a few occasions.
The episode where they're having dinner and Emma is mad / brooding at his behavior goes on and on for too long for example.
All the lingering looks, will they wont they too long, too much.
If anyone is finding it hard going and not yet read the book, I think reading the book before watching is a good idea

I’m only on episode 4 - not really got much to say apart from I fancy him so much. 🥰 I’ve briefly skimmed over some comments as don’t want to see spoilers but I agree with the lack of chemistry between them both - don’t understand how their first night could have such a profound effect on eachother (more from Dexs side). I’m still going to keep watching tho cos he’s so fine.

I thought ambika’s northern accent was dreadful. (I’m northern, myself) and wasn’t consistent, anyway !
Me too. I think she’s a fantastic actor and loved her in This Is Going To Hurt, but her accent dropped in and out so much in One Day, it was distracting. After suffering through Anne Hathaway’s abysmal accent(s) in the movie version, I had high hopes for this being great in comparison. Bit of a let down in that sense - why not hire an actual northern actor for this part? Being northern is a big part of her identify 🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved it! But more so in spite of itself - so much wasted potential IMO. I’m sorry to say but I found her really quite bad.. Really wooden! Didn’t find them believable at all and I actually found her acting worse as the series went on? Leo and the script carried the whole thing for me, it could have been so much better.

Also the comment about how good they looked 20 years ago when they still look the EXACT same was a lol. The lack of aging was quite distracting for me

She kind of ruined it for me.
Compared to the depths shown by Leo as Dex, Ambika displayed very little range with Em.
I wasn't a fan of Anne Hathaway in the film, but at least she showed more emotion than just bitter sarcasm.

I agree. The range was limited and, being blunt, I don't think she had the looks to have attracted the shallow Dex is the first place. I don't mean classical beauty necessarily. When she had her hair up in a half ponytail she looked about 12.

I just googled it, looking for the name of the actress that plays Dexter's Mum and saw this in a review in The Guardian:

"One Day has problems. The Em-Dex connection sometimes feel less sexual/amorous, more mutually needy emotional vampirism. (Would their real-life counterparts really bother with each other?) The decades – 1980s through to the 00s – barely register bar a busy soundtrack and asides about mobile phones (“You can send messages on it like a little typewriter”). Emma’s ethnicity is mentioned so fleetingly you wonder if you dreamed it. The novel’s poignant sense of time passing is here confined to Dexter’s hair getting darker."
