One Day - Netflix Series

Currently binge watching, finding it really realky slow going and frustrating in places. Read the book way back when and watched the film, I don't remember feeling so frustrated with the film. Not sure yet which I prefer but the guy playing Dex is literally the perfect Dex

With the film they only have 1.5 hours to fit 20 years in. Netflix has hours to get the story right. Part of me was a bit like “that’s not Emma.” in the beginning, mainly because I thought Emma was supposed to be a white girl with a fringe and it took me back a bit. But once I got over myself, I can’t imagine another Emma.

Dex was absolutely spot on.

I’m on episode 4 and I’m finding it hard to like it, mainly because Emma is such an unlikeable character. It’s so hard to believe that her and Dex will ever be together as they appear so incompatible.

I also think the casting of Emma is a bit dubious, I just can’t stop seeing her as Shruti from This Is Going To Hurt.

Should I persevere or give up?

Do persevere, I felt the same and its really not until they finally DO allow thier true feelings that it stopped being difficult for me. I think possibly the maze scene was the turning point for me ( I won't spoil it, just keep going and come back after the maze scene)
You are spot on it's Emma that's the problem, they made her just so unlikable. It does change.
We have just watched the final episode and I must say I absolutely fell in love with Dex, more so at the end 💔

I’d say don’t give up but I don’t find her unlikeable 🤷🏻‍♀️
I haven’t seen This Is Going To Hurt though.

I watched this and Normal People in tandem. Whilst i enjoyed One Day, Normal People is another league. Especially Daisy Edgar Jones who is the most glorious actor. If you enjoyed One Day, try Normal People and come back and comment. I cried buckets watching Normal People. Just delightful.

I was a teenager in the 1980s and the music and nostalgia was wonderful in One Day and i think if it was set in a different era it might not have resonated quite as well.

Normal People - go go go. And feedback please!

I miss Connell and Marianne. 💔

It defo got better for me but not till about episode 5. Found to slow up till then. I absolutely loved Dex but didn’t particularly warm to Emma and didn’t really feel much chemistry between them, although was rooting for them to get together. I didn’t cry at the end but I thought Dex was superb at showing how heartbroken he was and what a vulnerable and broken character he was throughout the series. The soundtrack was amazing too.
Just to compare, I watched the film again this evening. I thought the chemistry was overall better between Dex and Emma. I could see what Dex found attractive in Emma, given she was pretty and quite funny, although her English accent was a bit crap!
I broke my heart reading the book and watching both versions, just makes me want to read that again!

I’ve just finished watching this last night. Absolutely loved it. I haven’t read the book or watched the film so had no idea what was coming. Will definitely be watching the other programme Leo has been in 😜

Did it make anyone else think about their ‘one that got away?’

The only bit I didn’t like, was when Dex turned up in Paris and was heartbroken that Em had met someone else. As she’s had to sit back and watch him marry and have a baby with someone else. But I guess that was part of his privilege.

I read both books when I was younger and still put myself through the pain of the tv shows, I'm also Irish so normal people hits a lot different, puts me right back in secondary school hiding from the cool kids.
With One Day, I'm about 10 years younger than the characters, ngl Tillys song is penciled in to be my funeral song 😂
Also the Greek holiday they took, was so beautifully written in the book, and brings back all the memories of my first greek holidays, when we were broke af, drank beers on balconies at night, and ate pastries on the beach. Brings back a lot of lovely memories, youth is so wasted on the young :D

I enjoyed this series. Loved the book, enjoyed the film (Anne Hathaway’s casting aside). I quite liked Emma’s character in the series (unpopular opinion maybe). Obviously knowing what was coming I didn’t cry at that scene but it was the final episode that got me. I watched with my husband who has never seen the movie or read the book and he was shocked by the ending.
The soundtrack was perfect too.

I'm on episode 7 now.
i loved the book and enjoyed the film. Was really looking forward to the series with it having more opportunity to develop the story to the depths the book did.
Dex is perfectly cast and I think the actor plays a great part, but can't take to the Netflix version of Emma. The actress doesn't seem to do her justice, and the character comes across as one dimensional as a result, which is disappointing.
I feel like it could have been amazing and it's a bit wasted.

Read the book back in the day and have seen the film but only the once years ago.
I enjoyed the series but didn’t feel any real friendship or chemistry between them until they actually got together. The last few episodes you do see and feel the connection but genuinely up until Paris I really didn’t believe their friendship.
It’s not that I didn’t believe he could like her, I just didn’t feel any warmth between them.
I kept just thinking “why are they even friends”? All Emma does is witch at him and all he does is fanny about being drunk.

I did like the actress who played Emma, it’s not that I thought she was bad, she played a good character, just wasn’t a character with much warmth and depth for me.
the bloke who played Ian was fab! And Tilly.

He just doesn’t seem to grow very much. Over, like, decades.

Yeah I said this to MrGrumpos when we finished it. He played a great part but his character arch was basically non existent, sure he moves on from being a cleb but he’s still basically the same person 2 decades later. I think that’s true to the book though. So it’s the story rather than the adaptation
