I just finished it, after being initially very unexcited for it (the Targaryens would be my last pick for a spin off) I really enjoyed the first episode. I thought the nods to original GOT were done well and not cheesy like they could have been. I hope it’s only 2 seasons or so though, if they drag it out I could see it losing fans.

I enjoyed the episode but feel like some thing were missed out, like the baby died, they didn’t make that clear until the bodies were wrapped, also (can’t remember her name) did she have sex with the king?

Not going to spoil it for you but she becomes important in the story. It will become clear in future episodes. I think the show can be quite hard to follow if you haven't read the source material.

I think this show will do fine as GRRM has already written the entire story and thankfully D&D aren't involved. He needs to stop focusing on TV shows and finish Winds of Winter already it's been 11 years and he's 73. I think it's likely we will never get A Dream of Spring the final novel 😩.

We thought this but I'm wondering if it will be resolved in a flash back? As normally in shows if something wrong with the baby it doesn't cry. Am wondering if the measter is actually in the pocket of Damon and did something ?

Part of me wants to look at family trees to figure out who everyone is but at the same time I'd rather be more ignorant on the whole story to avoid spoilers. I'm sure the storytelling will fill most of it in.

Watched the first episode. Will stick around for the next one.
Tried reading about the Targaryens in an article to work out the characters - it hasn’t sunk in! I’ll have to work out the characters from watching the show.

HOTD family tree 🤣

I really enjoyed it. It was so nice being back in that world again. I don't know who half the characters are but I'm sure I'll get to grips soon! Mild spoilers:

The "medical stuff" kept pulling me out of it though. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I don't think they'd have cauterization and C-sections in those days?!
wasnt Julius Caesar a section baby? I had to fast forward those bits but enjoyed

This! I've re-read the existing books so many times over the last ten years. I want the end of the story (I know we technically already have it but I want to know how GRRM gets there and if it's different from the show).

Like some others on this thread I felt OK about the season 8 ending - agree though that it did maybe feel a bit rushed and even just one more season would have been good. For all it's flaws, season 8 also delivered some INCREDIBLE episodes and some really outstanding acting, direction and cinematography.

I really enjoyed the HOD pilot. Was getting goosebumps just being back in that world. It's such an interesting universe and I'm excited to see how it all plays out.

A C section was how Caesar was delivered, I thought, hence caesarian secion

I think people need to accept he will never finish this.He doesn't want to and he's a slow writer at the best of times 😄

I think it’ll be fine. If you think back to how many different houses and characters were thrown into the first few episodes of GoT this seems quite light touch in comparison!

Sorry if this has been talked about but what books does this follow? I read blood and fire or something like that, came out 2 or 3 years ago (so good) but doesn't match this.

I do wish there weren't so many characters with the same/similar names. I get that it's true to how monarchies work but it isn't half a headache keeping up!

Pros:
- Matt Smith was ace. The kind, wise, goofy Doctor is now all sweary and swaggery and a little bit sexy? And I'm on board?! All the acting was pretty great tbh.
- Nice to see some jousting (a bit too much of it though)
- Good dynamics between characters

Cons:
- Needs more lightness, both in terms of literal lighting (like GoT it can be hard to ruddy see what's happening) and in terms of characters with more wit/likeability/pluckiness. I missed Tyrion's wit, the 'grit' of the wildlings, the determination and loyalty of Brienne etc. But it is only episode one I guess.
- Given it's a prequel and a lot has been written already in Fire and Blood etc, might it end up being a bit, well, dull? I'm hoping for some surprises along the way.

Has anyone here read the book ? I really want to and have read the song of ice and fire, but have heard it is more a textbook style ! Is it tricky to get into?

I got my partner a signed copy of it :) It's true, it is more textbook style but it kind of feels story-based too! I definitely think it is a heavy read. I thought the whole series was heavy in general (loved but heavy for bed time reading). This certainly never felt like bed time reading! It was 'my brain needs to be fully engaged to watch!'

I read up about the jousting scene. Apparently, when Aemma says that 'childbirth is a woman's battlefield' or whatever, the idea of the long jousting scene juxtaposed to her labour was to mimic what she was going through. Found that intriguing!

About the 'getting dull' - I don't think it will! GoT was already written up until the final seasons and that kept everyone super engaged. I think the help of the dragons and some curveballs pulling from souce material will help this :) I know the story and was thoroughly enthralled and am very excited to see how it will go. I do agree, they need more wit though!!

Watched it yesterday and really enjoyed it however it just made me mad again about season 8 of GOT. Even here - almost 200 years before - they talked about the prophecy and the white walkers but in season 8 they just got slayed in one episode and then moved on.

It was a really lame ending. D&D just wanted to rush through it so they could move on to their next project. George R. R. Martin said he thought it should’ve been at least 10 seasons. It’s not even the ending itself that was bad to me, it was the execution of it. Throughout the series they built up the Night King and Jon’s true parentage, just to let it fall flat. I also thought they could have taken longer to show Dany’s descent into madness. It just seemed so unrealistic that she would flip so drastically.

I’m glad the source material is there for House of the Dragon, I don’t think it will disappoint. Martin needs to finish the book series, but it seems unlikely as that’s two more books and he isn’t getting any younger. Maybe with the book material behind it S8 of GoT might have been better.
