@smellsofbiscuits Couldn't agree more.

I listen because the music is quite mixed genre and for me the least bad on a live broadcast station. But I've regularly been turning off when I can no longer stand the constant shout outs - to someone up a ladder doing their DIY or on a long drive somewhere. Also the throw-outs "give us a song about mirrors" are painful, as are the contrived theme shows.

I don't know why they seek so much engagement from listeners, who all seem to feel the need to flex their "cool" :ROFLMAO: cred by saying they were at some early gig, or bought the band's first 7".

Jo Whiley is particularly bad for this
"I took the kids along to meet Florence & The Machine....totes amazeball vibe for Cressida and Tarquin....they even loved her toe rings"

BBC 6 Music this morning; Lauren Laverne reads an email from a listener who says her treat to herself is to use only really nice towels. Today's People's Playlist is "call in with songs about amphibians"

I almost forgot the thing where listeners send in a voicenote recording their squeaky oven door that sounds like the intro to some song, or when a misheard lyric is someone's name. I think they believe they're being ironic about the lame-ness of it, but it's just straight-up lame.

For a station that has Music in its title, there's a lot of cringey prattle.

FWIW I'm a Gen X, I suppose I'll have to wait 15 years for Boom Radio's version of 6 Music.

I’ve always found 6 music for people who want to look like they enjoy music rather than actually enjoying music. I’m also the only middle aged woman who apparently doesn’t like self esteem, I think she’s a bit tit.
Completely agree with you about Self Esteem - makes me cringe every time I hear or see her. Can’t understand the appeal at all.

Fellow Gen X-er here. I like 6 Music, but agree that stations have to get the balance right in terms of interaction. Sometimes there is just too much (and this applies elsewhere in the BBC in general). I don't always want to hear this minutiae about other people's lives. Even worse, though, is when presenters spend seemingly the entire show asking for callers' experience about tedious things, to then only take one or two calls on it before they drift on to something else. It's a shocking waste of airtime.

Back to 6 Music in particular, they did a fantastic theme day a few months back where every track was from 1978. And not just the cool 6 Music Elvis Costello stuff, either (Hot Gossip's 'Starship Trooper' was in there). Very well thought out and put together in my view.

I still (mostly) love 6 Music, but what I don’t like is where it gets very self indulgent from some of the presenters, and listeners. Lauren Laverne is one of the worst. As an example, what’s that feature called she does once a week where a listener comes on, has a little chat with Lauren and they’ve put together a playlist based on a time in their life or experience they’ve had? That began as an interesting section of the show, with a diverse range of people. But over time it’s morphed into something for narcissists to come on and plug themselves, their business, a book they’ve written, a film they’ve made… whatever, it’s mostly dreadful.

I used to keep 6 Music on all day, then when Shaun left I only listened to RadMac, and now I don't bother at all. Can't bear Lauren nor Craig nor most of the crap Mary Anne plays.
I have FIP on most of the time now, dip into Kool FM and luck-dip around Radio Garden with my VPN.

Och I do like Jo Whiley as she keeps me company on the chores shift once the kids are in bed. Although her talking about her own kids makes me feel old 😝

I'm also in the minority here as I really like Self Esteem's music. It's the only gig I've been to that's included a clip from Happy Valley which tickled me greatly 😂

I’ve got a lot of time for Vernon, if I was designing the schedule he’d do the Steve Wright/Scott Mills slot and Ken would have his show back… haven’t warmed to Scott at all and there was a bit of a pointed comment today when he was talking about the names Barbie / Ken coming back into popularity followed by ‘There aren’t many Kens about… certainly not here…’ 😬

Actually really pissed about this. Steve Wright's voice sets my teeth on edge. Pick of the Pops is my Saturday pottering background music. Love Paul's stylised radio voice which fits that show perfectly.

If they move Rylan and Lisa Tarbuck from Saturday's schedule then that's my Saturdays RUINED*.

[*This is a joke. Maybe.]
Rylan and Tarbs are the best shows on the station!

We love Gambo on a Saturday!
