West End Gossip #3

What are the longest any WE/BW actors have stayed in a role for, does anyone know? Feels like Joel has been there forever and ever and ever...

Not sure but he must be coming up for 3 years by now? I know the guy who plays Ron in Harry Potter & the Cursed Child has stayed with it since 2018 I think. But not a musical.

I read it wrong too.

Wishful thinking!
There was a man in the Broadway Company of Phantom, he’d been in the same role (can’t remember which one) for decades, he was asked to stay by managers, constantly had his contract renewed etc.

It was really sad, they suddenly let him go, no reason given. Everyone in the show was supporting him, fighting it and the producers went nope.

I don't blame them to be honest, it's like any regular job. Especially in an industry full of uncertainty. Better that than temping or some minimum wage job. If the show is happy with your performance and agree to renew contracts then it's guaranteed income. And in the case of the Lion Kong then Disney are one of the best to work for. Cameron Mackintosh is meant to be pretty good to

Keeping hoping, they seem to be clinging on to the current KGIII for some godforsaken reason.
speaking of KGIII has anyone else seen the debut public You'll Be Back at Lincoln Center featuring Gavin Creel thats just emerged. I thought his voice was really good but he was no Groff.. to be fair though JG had more time to play with it

I wonder if he will go back into Just For One Day when it reopens at the Shaftesbury. As much as I think he is a prat he did play the part of Harvey Goldstein in that show well at The Old Vic
probably BECAUSE he's a prat

That could be financial. As a job seeker I have heard that companies hate people who have been in role for ages as they are often tied to costly pensions loyalty. long term service, various benefits etc and its cheaper to get someone new in from scratch

The reviews for Devil Wears Prada are not great. I must admit I wasn’t rushing to buy a ticket even before this, didn’t appeal to me and I just can’t see Vanessa Williams as Miranda at all

Has anyone seen it and actually enjoyed it?

I saw it in previews in London a few weeks ago and must admit I was a bit disappointed. I didn’t feel like there were any stand out songs apart from ‘dress your way up’ and felt Vanessa Williams performance was a bit lacklustre- she also didn’t sing in some songs but spoke the words instead. The cast are good, my personal favourite was the character of Emily. They also added in a new character not in the film who plays a completely pointless - and frankly a bit weird - part. Overall it was ok and I think it will do well little based on how well received the film was but there was something missing for me.
