I heard Annie Mac interviewed on Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett's (excellent) podcast this week and she was talking about recently completing her second novel.

She said it was currently with some 'friends' who were reading it with a view to providing a quote for the cover. Can we hazard a guess that these 'friends' will include Dolly Alderton, Daisy Buchanan, Pandora Sykes and Marian Keyes?

Word is that several prominent people in the London literary set have described it as 'essential', just like every other bloody book they review...

I might be wrong but I don’t think that’s Annie’s tribe at all. But if those are the blurbles that help sell books I spose they’ll be on the cover.

edited to add: yeah the last book has Sinead Gleason and Candace Carty-Wright.

omg so glad I found this thread!

I quite like Dolly, Pandora, and then also Caroline and Ella Risbridger and that set but have a massive issue with the absolute refusal to acknowledge their privilege.

They are all rich women from middle class families (maybe not Caroline but Ella for sure) and then market themselves as #relateable they are all also thin, straight, white, and able bodied and yet present as though they are the quirky interesting set. When really they are all extremely samey.

Been lurking here for a while but glad you’ve mention Ella. I do not like her style of writing at all, it feels incredibly overwrought. Though having heard her speak she came across better that way (for me anyway).

I couldn’t not mention Ella. She’s so pompous. I love all the things she and Caroline talk about on sentimental garbage (mitfords, little women etc) but can’t stand how ridiculously pompous Ella is. I’m Australian and she’s exactly the kind of person who would call you a colonial and think it’s charming 😂

Posho (and many middle class) families often have 3 for the status, 2 children is too run-of-the-mill, too average. I’ll probably get some flack for saying that but it’s true! See Kate and Pippa Middleton, Sarah Corbett-Winder, Alice Naylor-Leyland. Of course people can chose to have as many children as they want and it may be because they just love raising a big family but in a lot of these families nannies do most of the childcare. Being maternal is not necessary. Pregnancy is probably the hardest part but no doubt made easier with a child free trip to the Maldives with your hubs!

Sally Rooney can be discussed, think there are some other Irish ones floating about too :)

Her characters never seem to HELP anyone or do anything brave or anything else other than sit around introspecting about themselves? And she always looks miserable :)
I know this is months late but I tried so hard with her latest. I picked it up, got bored, and slogged my way through 200 pages. It’s as if the worst aspects of Normal People and Conversations with Friends were condensed into something deeply unlikeable. I wish I was able to critique it properly and I can’t find any reviews that don’t adore her.
