I hated Normal People so much. I really thought I would love it too.
The character of Marianne was so irritating and problematic. Strangely attractive as she was so thin, quirky and misunderstood. All the boys secretly loved her and felt protective of her. Bleurgh. Plus she was the most colossal drip.

same. I really despise Sally Rooney’s writing. Its baffles me that she’s so hyped up. Her books are easy to read but the underlying themes just perpetuate a lot of harmful ideas. For example that a toxic relationship isn’t toxic, it’s just that they are really in love and can’t communicate it. How many women across the world have rationalised and permitted the ill treatment they’ve revived from their romantic partners by making a similar excuse? We don’t need to see it confirmed and perpetuated in romantic novels.

Normal people has been described by critics as well as Sally Rooney herself, as a more accurate depiction of the difficulties faced by relationships. But it reads to me like a bizarre fantasy put onto paper. Sally is clearly Marianne, odd and weird at school, but then finds her footing at Trinity. Connor is just every teenage social outcast fantasy at school; have the fit popular guy fall intensely in love with you, because you’re NoT lIkE oThEr GiRls and then getting to emerge on top later in life at uni.

I have a list of books I’ve read that I’ve put into a list of books that I wouldn’t someday want my teenage children to read, or at minimum if they wanted to read them, I’d want to discuss it afterwards and discuss the problematic messages in the book. This book is on it. One of the other books is Twilight lol

Oh god same. Plus I just knew when I read it that Sally would look exactly like Marianne in real life. Sure enough…thin and quirky brunette!

Daisy E Jones was perfectly cast, she has played a variation of the same role in everything I’ve seen her in. She would fit in perfectly with the literary luvvies if she decided to turn her hand to writing.

Considering she's apparently not into fashion, this is quite a lot of fashion stuff lately...

anyone listened to Elizabeth Day's HTF new episode with her husband? I nearly died i cringed so much. Two smug rich people patting eachother on the back and pretending to have problems. Her husband also has the most unattractive voice and gives me cringe vibes, don't think they'll last. She comes across so needy too!

Why does she think we care about him? Also, the raging body dysmorphia and disordered eating would be a huge red flag for me. Not a good environment to live in in my experience.

What’s the deal with Daisy EJones?
Nepo baby, mum, head of sky arts dad and is in pretty much everything with the slightest bit of buzz about it.

Every few years there is a new Daisy as the old ones either age out of the ingenue bracket and or make a series of dud film choices. They all look the same, marketed the same way and have that same air of anaemic waifish put on vulnerability that audiences supposedly love. She won’t be the first or the last.

I always admired Jamie lee Curtis, when she mentioned she auditioned for Halloween but it was down to her and one other actress, she’s come out and spoken about how she knows it was down to her mum being an actress in pyscho that got her the part, because ultimately that would generate hype for the movie.

in an absolute sea of nepo babies, both in the acting world but also literary world, music etc etc. She one of the few who has been frank about her privilege instead of insisting I WoRk ReAlLy HaRd ThOuGh

Who else would you include in that category, out of interest? Love the way you put it and I’m sure you’re right!

I agree I really like JLC. She is a great comedic actor too, fab in Knives Out.

does anya Taylor effing joy count?

her parents aren’t in showbiz but are very wealthy and I’ve heard that’s why lots of doors have opened for her. I’m starting to get soooo fed up of seeing her in literally everything.

similar to Cara and Poppy Delevigne. Rich parents opened doors for them even if said parents don’t work in fashion.

I’m not the original person who mentioned her but her dad created big brother amongst other shows. I only know that from listening to Pandora’s podcast on reality tv where came across far better than the other creators tbh. Though that is a very low bar!!! 😂😂😂 I think Daisy is a good actress though.

is she a good actress or is she just in lots of good projects so we think she’s good?

feels a bit emporers new clothes to me. I don’t think she’s an exceptionally good actress. I just think she was able to be more selective with what work she took because she comes from money.

One of the best actresses I’ve ever seen was Natalie Dormer, a few years ago in a play. She was absolutely incredible. Probably the best I’ve ever seen. She was so charismatic and engaging. It was Venus in Fur and the chemistry between her and David oakes was incredible, I was disappointed when I found out she as engaged at the time to someone else. But apparently she’s just had a baby with David Oakes so my wish came true;)

It goes without saying but Jodie Comer is also exceptionally talented, and Lesley Manville is amazing. They just all have a very natural charisma.

When you see actors in a play, you really get a sense of who is truly amazing and who is just plain good. I’m lucky being in London that the theatre on offer is amazing.

I don’t think Saorise Ronan, Daisy Jones etc etc are especially good, I think they get hyped up because they are well connected and overexposed.

Daniel Radcliffe (bless his soul) has got to be the least talented nepo baby on the planet and has probably made the most money from acting. His acting has gotten to a point where it’s OK but he’ll never be exceptional or amazing. I think at least he knows he’s not great 😂

Cara Delevigne has just been mentioned and I’d almost forgotten how a few years ago she was everywhere, not only with the modelling but all the appearances in movies and tv shows, including as a lead in Paper Towns. She can’t act for toffee, her attitude stunk and the entitlement just radiated off her, her press for Paper Towns was a massive own goal.

American movie makers wet themselves over British actors with “pedigree” how many chances has Cara been given despite limited talent a raging addiction problem and a propensity to look down her nose at everyone.
