UK Literary Luvvies #3 Logistical reasons mean the only recommendations I have are Greek cleaning products

Made the mistake of listening to the "Child free, not by choice" episode of Best Friend Therapy this morning.

So much self-indulgent therapy speak. And don't even get me started on the ethics of paying a woman for her eggs. ED said she agrees with it because some of the women use the cash to pay for their college fund. Red flags much!?!

One thing I find striking whenever ED talks about her desire to be a mother is that she never acknowledges her step-children. She just wants a baby of her own, not to actually be a parental figure.

I also listened to it and had the same thoughts. Her poor stepkids, she doesn't think of them at all. I was also rolling my eyes about how all along she imagined having a mini me daughter into the same things as her - so after all that a son wouldn't have been good enough anyway? Or a girl who wasn't just like her? Plus all the slut shaming talk about how many partners she's TTC with 🙄🙄

Exactly, it's so odd! It's like her mind hasn't progressed beyond a perfect rosy-faced baby. Even when she talks about motherhood it's references to sleepless nights and changing nappies. I'm sure that's a big part of parenting but it's not all there is. Her stepchildren don't seem to fall into her idea of motherhood.

She wants a baby, she doesn't want parenthood. Otherwise I think she would take a more active role in raising her step kids.

Is there an irritating podcasts thread? I’ve come to be really irritated listening to so many podcasts lately, finding them all boring just ppl talking about themselves plugging a book or some healthcare charlatans (Zoe app etc is an immediate switch off for me!!) and often very middle class, self indulgent crap with very little substance. It started with FCs Happy Place after the second series, just got fed up of the plugs for books etc and just all a bit samey. When FC had RB on I just lost respect cos I found him repulsive and I couldn’t bear the worshipping of what was clearly a charlatan. Then the ED HtF i just got bored with that and her smugness. Lately I’ve found a few podcasts I thought were going to be really good only to realise it’s the same issues. Recently a menopause one had a guest I like, but again just annoying, self indulgent people. Suppose if you’ve written a book about a subject, there’s nothing left to say except talk about yourself. Hope that all makes sense but I’ve come to realise I need to just pay for books to listen to perhaps as the podcast market is flooded with crap. I love Adam Buxtons podcast, Maintenance Phase and I enjoy Psychopedia pod but some subject matter I’m a bit scared of but it’s brilliantly presented and funny. Oh and Richard and Judys book club, can’t work out if I’m listening to Alan Partridge or Richard sometimes so it is worth it for that laugh. Anyone got any good suggestions? Sorry for long read 😊

Yes and I didn’t love the book or film but I adore this.
After a couple of episodes I thought ahhhh this is the exact tone all about love the tv series failed to achieve.
Might give it a go then! The problem with that ‘Everything…” adaptation is that Dolly Alderton is just SO pleased with herself. It needed to be more about the time period and less about the ‘quirky’ main character

It’s so annoying Adam Buxton only release in limited bursts! I want an episode of that every week.
I enjoy every outfit podcast and the Julia Louis Dreyfus one. Books could kill is great and you don’t need to have read the books especially as they are ones I’d never normally read.

It captures the time incredibly well and really gets to the difficulties in changes in long term friendships and unresolved relationships in a way that has absolutely got under my skin.

Just listened to the Gays Reading podcast with Dolly Alderton and she references her “other half”. She seems so unlucky in love, hope this one works out for her. Sorry, I am unapologetically one of those people who has a soft spot for her and her writing!
I think she’s just not nice, men are not picky 😆 Very self centered and dramatic I imagine.
I get you though, what I like about her is she’s obviously a real reader, not a poser. She reminds me of myself

The daughter comment was a major red flag. Major.
