Just have a question. Why were 60,000 fans allowed to the Euros the other day? But hardly any crowd allowed at the Olympics? Just doesn't have the same atmosphere.

Japan implemented strict restrictions following a state of emergency. Even the athletes have to enter Japan no more than 5 days before and must leave within 48 hours after their last event.

The UK lifted restrictions on sporting events but were under pressure from UEFA to increase capacity to 60,000 otherwise it would’ve been moved to Budapest where there were no restrictions.

Japan have had an increase in cases and are being extremely strict on it. Apparently a poll on the morning of the games suggested that 55% of Japanese people didn’t even want it to go ahead.

Different area of the world, different rules, I guess.

We have 2 riders in the top 5 and as a team they are just ahead of Germany in gold medal position ahead of the cross country tonight. Eeeek. I will definitely be watching tonight!
I can’t wait for the xc!! I’m one of those who shouts sit uuuuuuup at the tv 🤣

So Simone Biles withdrew from vault and uneven bars. I know Mykayla Skinner is now doing vault instead but does anyone know who moved up in uneven bars?
And as I think it’s very likely, who would compete for her on balance beam and floor? I can’t find the lists anywhere 😕

If she’s out of floor too then the other British twin is first reserve. One of them is already in the floors final but they mentioned it after the all around

If there’s another American gymnast that didn’t make the finals because of the rule of 2, then they will step up - which is what happened with mykayla skinner. The others, it’ll be the first reserve

Melanie de Jesus dos Santos has been given the bars place

It says all the individual ones have been rescheduled but Joanna Adlerteg from Sweden is FR.

The USA could replace Simone Biles with another of their athletes though as they are allowed 2.
They can only replace her with another US gymnast if she was in the top 10 and missed out because there were already two US gymnasts in the final they can’t just replace her with another one, the place will go to whoever os first reserve regardless of country

It’s been updated already so American MyKayla Skinner will replace Biles in the vault final and France's Melanie de Jesus dos Santos in the uneven bars. Sweden’s Joanna Adlerteg is first reserve in uneven bars after this update.

Why dosent she just go home then, not even being rude? She might as well just say now she's not going to do anymore instead of drip feeding it ever few days when it's coming up to it. Like just go back home and focus on your mental health. I'm sure the team will understand. I don't mean this to come across mean or unsympathetic because I am if she's struggling with her MH but just say straight out you're pulling out of them all in one time if that's what you intend to do. Just makes people or fans think "ahh she might not do this one , but she might do that one" only to keep cancelling

Because it will bring up more questions than it answers and she might feel better for say floor on Wednesday (one of them I believe is Wednesday) and this might be her last Olympics so she might push herself for say floor if she feels she can. It might be she is having waves of issues so could wake up and feel okay for Wednesday

Kick on team gb!

The reserves should be preparing as if they’re going to compete until the athletes begin competition. Simone, and any Olympic finalist, deserves to hold their spot until they’re sure they can’t compete. It’s not a secret and everyone in a reserve position is aware that there’s a reasonable likelihood that Simone will withdraw. There’s also a chance any athlete could test positive for COVID-19.

It doesn’t even seem to be a mental health thing anymore. She’s been talking about it on her IG a bit and apparently she just doesn’t know how to twist anymore and gets lost in the air. Obviously mental health is part of that, but it seems that all gymnasts tend to experience this sort of thing and it’s unfortunate that for her it was during the Olympics

She’s had access to an outside gym where she’s been training her basics on soft surfaces, but she said it normally takes two weeks to get back to the level she is at normally

...and by then the Olympics will be finished. I wonder if this will be her last Olympics? I mean gymnast have a short career, she's 24 and losing the ability to twist so I wonder.

I watched Mckyla’s vlog from yesterday and she was looking to return back to the US and didn’t know what to do.

However, there’s a lot not being said these vlogs - for example no mention of her team mate the alternate who caught covid and had to quarantine. They all moved hotel due to it but she didn’t say why just looked a bit panicked….

There are older gymnasts though who still are quite good. Kim Bui from Germany is 32 and she reached her best place during the AA final! So there could be a chance for Simone to come back in 3 years

I think Simone could still possibly compete in beam and floor because she could get away with doing those routines and replacing her twisting skills with flips. She said vault and UB were where her twisties are the worst because both involve a lot of twisting skills.
Just need to see what she’s been able to adapt and if she feels confident in her ability to perform those skills.

I think this was always going to be Simone’s last Olympics, at least doing team and all around, so it’s a shame it’s ended this way for her. They have already reduced the difficulty score for her highest scoring skills to even the field between Simone and the other athletes, so why should she continue to push to better herself and perform new difficult skills when she is effectively going to be penalised for performing them in competition?
