The Crown - Netflix

I think the casting for Philip is off - he was a very tall man & Jonathan Pryce is too short . He doesn’t command the same presence . Shame because Philip has been cast so well previously with Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies

love Imelda Staunton as the queen , Lesley Manville as Margaret is also a great choice . I think they’ve done Anne dirty though - she’s nowhere near the force she was in s3 & 4 !

I quite like the new Diana. If you watch her interviews, she did have a very distinctive way of speaking and doing that big eyed stare. Still getting used to the others.

I didn’t like that theyused a child’s death as a plot point. It’s insensitive, especially with the very subtle affair hints.

Also theDodi stuff was kinda of pointless. The scene “I’ll call you Dodi” made me cringe. Felt like it was written by Al Fayeds.

I’ve watched the first two episodes, sorry if this has been said I haven’t read the whole thread but I can’t believe how bad the casting is compared to earlier series. all I see and hear is Dolores umbridge 😂

Not that I’m saying it’s terrible I just mean in comparison to previous series. For example josh Connor I thought was fantastic as was the actress who played princess Anne. And obv Matt smith and Claire foy were great

I think it's difficult to get used to the cast changes, maybe because the previous cast were so good and we know who they are. In House if Deagon they changed up half the cast halfway through the season, and I got used to them almost immediately, but they are fictional characters, albeit based on a book.

First two series were world class drama, well cast, detail focused, engaging, and balanced.

Series 3&4 bit more drama, liberties taking, dodgy casting.

5&6 sheer soap opera, manipulated narrative, more dodgy casting and riding on the success of series 1&2.

Completely agree, it's not the series it once was.

I did think Dominic had moments where he really nailed Charles though.

The guy playing Andrew also was quite good but he had so little to do. They may as well have renamed series 4 and 5 'the crown - Charles and diana'

They have done companion books for s1-2 and s3-4. And they reflect the series as well.

Series 1&2 book is a pretty, sexy, glossy, coffee table book, glossy paper, lots of pictures, really nice quality.

The series 3&4 book, more like a big standard hardback, not glossy paper, very few pictures kinda naff really.

Series 5&6 book will be a crappy ebook with zero pics probably.

Joys of wfh - am on episode 5 currently.

Agree the casting of Philip doesn’t seem quite right but Imelda Staunton is much better than Olivia Coleman imo

I was in my early teens when Diana died so I’ve only seen press coverage of her since but I think the actress playing her has her mannerisms really well.

Ooh glad I found this thread dying to discuss the new series! I’ve only watched one episode but really keen to see what everyone thought of the casting? Dominic west is a great actor but I’ve just watched him in sas rogue hero’s & honestly felt could just be the same person, also his character in The Affair did put me off for life! The young new comers that played young Charles/Diana and Anne were sooo good.. hard to top I think! Also not sure about Phillip either. Glad I got that off my chest 🤣

100% agree!! I’ve rewatched the first two series a couple of times it’s that good

Might be in the minority here but I loved all 4 seasons before this . Gun to my head I probably did like Foy / Smith more than Coleman series but I didn’t really have any complaints about the casting for any

I agree about Dominic West . He’s not awful and there are times when I see Charles in him but agree his too handsome . Josh Connor was a VERY hard act to follow though so maybe we’ve been spoilt . Diana’s casting I do like though . I thought she was great and very accurate. And little William is VERY well cast !

hubs and I are hoping to watch another 2 eps tonight so I might have a better review

I've felt a little underwhelmed with this new series. Have watched eps 1 and 2 so far and I actually fell asleep in the second one  I was so looking forward to it, but I am finding it quite drawn out, some of the scenes feel too long and verbose. I feel like I don't know who half the people are in it, they didn't introduce any of the characters just assumed you'd work out who they were. I probably will continue watching, as I did really enjoy each series up to now. But it's not blown my hair back!

Saying all that I do enjoy watching Dominic West, but not sure he's Prince Charles. Think Immelda Staunten is quite good so far. Diana seems hammed up a little....

I agree I think Elizabeth Debicki looks so like Diana it's uncanny, but she's overdoing the mannerisms somewhat! I'm not sure what the Roysas were getting their knickers in a twist about so far. They all come across better than they did at the time- and far more attractive!
