The Crown - Netflix

I loved the first 2 series but I hadn’t seen Claire Foy in anything else so it was easy to think of her as The Queen.
I did watch the second 2 but didn’t quite enjoy them as much, I never stopped thinking oh that’s Olivia Coleman playing The Queen. That’s Helena Bonham - Carter, Gillian Anderson etc. For some reason I never felt like that during the first 2 even though some of the actor’s were big names.

Yes I agree to a point, although matt Smith I knew already and see him as the Duke. My biggest issue with the last two seasons is how it edged towards soap opera rather than historical drama.

I'm also rewatching it at the moment and it really does show what an incredible woman the queen was, within the parameters of the world she found herself in. Also that the queen mother was probably responsible for quite a few negative things. I know its widely known now that her and Diana's grandmother were largely responsible for Charles and Diana's arranged marriage

I get a feeling this series is gonna make my eyes roll out of my head. Diana = angel, Charles and Royals = evil. Is what I'm expecting. The series has lacked any nuance of storytelling the last series or two. Also apparently showing Philip attempting to have affairs. Whatever happened in their marriage seemed to work for them, Liz and Phil loved each other dearly. But I'm sure they will make it seem sordid.

Completely agree 100% on everything.

The first two series were a league above the last two, especially season 4. There is also no context about society at the time. Eating disorders and self hard were really an unknown to most people and people wouldn't have known how to handle it or what it was about.

The bias is pretty clear. Charles did plenty wrong bur Diana wasn't a Saint either.

They also miss so much out, Princess Anne's attemptes kidnapping for example which would be key character development . Season 4 especially was the Charles and Diana show. I'm hoping season 5 gives focus to fergie and Anne too as their marriages had a lot of drama around too

And yes I can only assume its due to the queen's passing that there is no trailer yet

Just rewatched 1 & 2 but no interest in seeing 3 & 4 again. 5 sounds like it will continue down the soap route.

Boycott ‘hurtful’ TV Crown say King’s friends: Furious John Major condemns Netflix drama’s ‘damaging and malicious lie’ that Charles urged him to oust the Queen as Jonathan Dimbleby called the show 'nonsense on stilts'
  • Friends of King Charles have called an episode in the new season of Netflix hit The Crown a 'hurtful smear' as it depicts him secretly plotting to oust the Queen
  • Former Prime Minister Sir John Major said meeting between him and then Prince of Wales never happened and called the scene a 'load of malicious nonsense'
  • Sir Malcom Rifkind, Foreign Secretary under Mr Major dubbed it 'pure fantasy'
  • Sources say death of the Queen five weeks ago makes scene particularly hurtful

Peter Morgan used to write very well balanced media about the Royals, series 1&2, The Queen etc. And I don't believe he is hugely monarchist, but I respected he seemed to achieve a level of balance in his work. But since S3, he's just gone off his nut, head first into soap opera/conspiracies/anti-monarchy hard line bollocks. And it's tainting this show.

They are really rattled by The Crown all of a sudden aren’t they? They’ve always sailed close to the wind. On S2 they insinuated Philip was cheating on The Queen (he almost certainly was BTW). KC‘s image has been rehabilitated in the last 20 years and they are clearly worried that all that good work will be undone and right at his succession as well. Remember it wasn’t so long ago he was a public hate figure for his treatment of Diana.

The 90s were a really difficult time for the monarchy, especially Charles. It makes megxit look like a minor squabble.

Charles undoubtedly didn't act that well, but Diana had her issues too and the problem with the crown is it treats it way too simply. It's wrong to say Charles doesn't deserve criticism but it's also crown to just portray him as villain and Diana as victim. I also don't buy him trying to overthrow the queen. There is loads of good stuff to cover without making up soapy storylines

I can remember abolishing the monarchy and becoming a republic being openly discussed on prime time TV in the early 90’s. It would be unthinkable now, but there was a real anti RF sentiment at the time which only got worse when Diana died. The Queen was also quite unpopular back then and was seen as a cold, stern and remote figure, the whole ‘Nations Grandmother’ thing was much more recent.

The show is tarnishing itself by leaning too far into the 'fictional dramatisation' avenue.

In the era of series 5, there is enough actual royal drama going on that they don't need to start making tit up.

Show has gone the same was as their F1 documentary Drive to Survive, creating fake narratives to play for attention etc. One series of that included a fierce rivalry between two McLaren drivers who actually had the cutest bromance you've ever seen.

Netflix is gonna screw itself over and over.
