we should probably all be aware how hard it is to age as a woman in today's society. Think about how it would feel to have an archive of videos of yourself from 10 years ago, where the views are higher and people were still able to access them and comment on how you've changed. It would suck and be terrible for confidence. I don't think Jess has changed much but I can totally see why that would be a concern. Plus she's got a big stream of income now with her substack, her career seems like its mainly journalism. The old videos don't really fit her current direction. I think its more a career choice than anything.

No one forced her to do it though? She posted everything voluntarily (and let’s face it she was always more guarded and private than most YouTubers). She also made ad revenue on all those videos. Of course she can change her mind and decide to go in a new direction, but let’s not pretend she’s a victim here.

I think Ines was unplanned, but imo Jess was already sliding into complacency way before that. She wasn't pursuing a rigorous career that she dropped when she got pregnant. I think she felt pretty aimless and was expecting motherhood to give her purpose, if anything.

The annoying thing is she could have pursued a career with YouTube still relevant to what she does now. She was one of the first student/study YouTubers that spoke about books, now it’s a massive market, look at Jack Edwards and Ruby Granger, but Jess at least had a coolness and sexiness neither of them two have, she could easily have been at a million subscribers now if she’d put some effort in.

Idk, she’s just started to come across as a bit of a snob in recent years. Doesn’t want to do xyz that contemporaries are doing, wants her own private paid corner and will only speak about books now that are inaccessible for a lot of people to read. I like reading, but I haven’t studied English in about 14 years since my GCSEs, but I still found a lot of the books she used to read appealing when she was at uni and got good recommendations from her. Now a lot just sound boring and like the kind of thing high brow people tell themselves are good to separate them from others. Could be it’s just her downward & miserable change in personality from uni and how she speaks about books now

You've put into words how I feel! I don't care about the fact she talks about books so much but the format and how she talks about them just feels like it has been regurgitated. It's cold. It sometimes feels like she doesn't even read books she likes to read anymore. Maybe making it a job has taken the joy out of it, I don't know. She's always been very academic in her approach but it was still fun to watch her older book videos. Honestly I think she deleted the old vlogs because she misses or feels bittersweet about her old life, she's had a lot of (probably traumatic) things happen in her family due to ill health and there may be other things we don't know about (including Zak, friendships etc) so maybe those vlogs sting a bit because she's finding things hard now whereas then she was a lot more carefree and more of a dreamer (wanted to act, then wanted to become a publisher etc). The engagement her old vlogs still continued to get probably came up on her feed often and affected her, hence why she still wants to put them up on another platform at some point (somewhere she isn't constantly reminded of them). The fact it's lined up with vlogmas as well makes sense as she would be experiencing another wave of people rewatching around about now.

I know shes in her 20's that doesn't make a difference. She has been open about her body image and how her style is evolving around it. Having a baby has a big impact on that too and likely made her a bit more private. I can imagine it's nice to not have past versions of yourself that people idolise lingering around on the internet for people to make comments on. What everyone forgets here when saying she appears more sad etc. is that being on camera is a performance. What jess is truly like has never been portrayed before. It appears to me she is going for a more low-key trajectory with her family....whats the big deal.

Her old vlogs were a super cute time capsule, yes, but people are allowed to privatise videos. It's not selfish to do that. Yes she choose to put them out, just as she is choosing to retract them. I don't see the big deal.

Totally agree. She had (and maybe still has) the potential to absolutely dominate in the book sphere but she's squandered it, I think earlier because she didn't want to give up on being a fashion girl etc. And now IDK it's like she thinks it's beneath her to do anything except wrap ups. There was a real gap in creators who read literary fiction and more serious or high brow or whatever books which she could have taken advantage of if she was willing to put in any effort.

I don't really care if she chooses to privatise the videos, I'll miss being able to watch her uni days but at the end of the day it's her content, her life and her choice.

What makes me laugh is her saying she doesn't want them being accessible and then saying she'll upload them elsewhere lol. Just say you don't want to see more comments on how you look miserable now and move on. She's full of shit, talking about providing for her little family et al like she's a Dickensian orphan, and not a vastly wealthy woman who doesn't have to lift a finger to live luxuriously. She acts like what she does for a living, or rather how she does it is above other influencers, but at the end of the day, they are all walking billboards. Jess pretending she hasn't made a fortune through undisclosed ads through the years is hilarious. If she wants to play pretend at being a literary hermit genius she can be my guest but I doubt a lot of old viewers will be buying that.

I agree 😅 I wouldn't want videos of my younger self out there either, and I think it makes sense for her to curate her online image especially if she's looking for more "industry" opportunities like the column or the author book club.

I find it fun to speculate about her reasoning and I'm curious to see if she offers them behind a pay wall or whatever, but I think if anyone is having an intense emotional reaction to this then that's indicative of an unhealthy parasocial relationship 🫣

I've reported what appears to be an attempt to moderate the thread and judge other people for their pretty mild opinions.

This isn't a Jess rave thread as far as I know so parasocial fans/online advocates can maybe cool off.

Not sure who you're referring to, but I don't think anyone here is raving, it's just interesting to speculate about her motivations and strategy. Personally I enjoy seeing multiple perspectives.

Granted I don't read all her comments or anything, but I don't think she really gets criticism on her looks/body? I think people commenting she's sad now would be saying that even without having the old vlogs for reference, and even on Tattle, I've mostly seen everyone be very understanding of body image issues with age/pregnancy, but all she does is start things. It has nothing to do with her body, but after a while it's silly that she'll say, "I'm doing a project to get back into fashion (with $$$$ of new clothing to inspire me)", and then never post any content about it. As a standalone incident that could be totally understandable - maybe fashion doesn't actually spark joy for her right then in a changing body she doesn't feel settled with. But she did this with things before getting pregnant. She does this with her book content. Relaunching a blog and only posting a few times.

I guess I just don't see most of her criticism as being "female beauty standards" related, it's basically all related to her seeming to waste her potential because she can't be bothered to follow through with anything long-term? She always says she's so busy but she's working less than full time, with a mostly stay at home partner, plus a nanny or nannies.

I think it’s more to do with the fact her buisness is failing (we’ve seen she’s been putting her money back in) by taking them down and putting them else where people will be active again. I also think something has happened that we don’t know, like with Zak for example.

I think she also wants to conceal her real wealth so when she’s pleading poverty people don’t come back at her

Wow the reactions to that reasoned comment are a bit much, no? I don’t think they were ‘raving’ or even painted her as a victim”, just pointed out another possibility. Just as some people speculated it could be a breakup.

I think it’s fine to snark about Jess and others in a way that also sometimes considers how it might be to have ‘grown up’ online, etc.
Like, I agree that for some reason the archive of her younger self full of potential and spark could be adding to her depression. And maybe some of that has to do with thoughts about aging. So? Just because one person feels a bit of sympathy there doesn’t mean they’re a fan or trying to control your thinking lmao.

Also the tone of this thread in particular is rarely vitriolic anyway, idk why that one comment triggered people esp since it didn’t try to tell others to stop their own posting.

honestly, I think some people here give her way too much credit... let´s face it. Jess is just plain lazy and spoilt!!!!

She will.not.ever.have.to.work.a.day.for.the.rest.of.her.life. and still would not have to compromise financially on anything! She has been depressed for years but is doing fuck all about it. It's fun to speculate but seriously, she has nothing and noone to blame for anything she might feel bad about...
- body image issues? > she has all the free time in the world to get off her arse and work out (no work schedule, a fucking nanny? how insane is just this fact alone, that none of them work and they still can't be bothered to spend time with their Child!!!)

- being sad about people enjoying her content from years ago more? > get out of the house and don´t be above filming any content at all which requires you to share ANYTHING about your life

- feeling ashamed of her (lack) of content or growth? > Well, she literally has ANY OPPORTUNITY: Interesting and fun (like the people above mentioned) book content, HOUSE RENO content... the list goes on

> she probably removed these videos in order to upload them somewhere she can charge her worryingly stupid followers (who actually believe she needs their money to support her family) to pay to see them.

again, more money for less / NO work at all.

if she literally has/does nothing else with her life other than what she shares online, I feel like it´s come to a point where I genuinely question her family for not stepping up and committing her into a psychiatric hospital. She is wasting her life and they all support it

I mean, I'm not "triggered" I'm just responding to that comment? It's true that women in general face a lot of criticism in society, but it doesn't seem to me like that's what caused Jess in particular to take the vlogs down.

If she just said she didn't feel like that reflected her accurately anymore or she didn't want them visible, I would still think it was odd, but understandable. I've hidden a lot of my teenage Facebook posts haha. But the promising to reupload them somewhere not behind a paywall just makes it feel like she's trying to do something because her business is struggling, like Lola said above.

If people are enjoying the content she used to make more than the content she makes now, maybe she should just listen and do something with that.

I don’t really see it as any different to a singer or tv show being told their recent album or series was shit compared to other stuff they’ve done. If they carried on making more of the shit then more people will turn away.

Creatives just seem to say “oh I make stuff I’d want to watch/content I like making” it doesn’t mean that it’s good content, and if you want to keep the creative job there has to be some balance with that and want people actually like.

but as folks always say when things are on the internet they are always out there and never really vanish without trace.. enough ppl have seen n commented in various places over the yrs to ensure that nobody will ever forget her privilege.

Now I'm wondering if maybe she already has something in mind for her plan to upload them "somewhere else"? Or else she's planning on saying "sorry my loves, I couldn't make Vimeo work but now they're in my cheapest Patreon tier...." I don't really think that's super in character for her to outright lie like that, but she does seem intent on getting cash through those channels.
