I appreciate when Shirley wants to give more technical feedback - because god knows it’s often lacking on that panel - but how she says it can ruin the feedback entirely. There’s a polite way to offer critique and Shirley massively missed the mark with Nigel. I'm assuming she saw that he was talented and wanted to push him but you’re totally right that her feedback and delivery could have easily knocked a contestant.
Also “We’re in week two now” might be one of the most ridiculous things a judge has said on a show filled with ridiculous comments.
Spot on. She reminds me of an art teacher we had years ago, who would constantly belittle the more talented and hardworking students, while praising the ones who made zero effort. Ugh. Nasty.
I watched on iplayer later last night and I rewound the kiss a few times. It was definitely on the cheek. Plus her partner was there watching, so I don’t think he would be so disrespectful as to give her a lingering kiss on the lips!
I think Giovanni and Amanda are trying really hard to prove that they are getting on just fine and sometimes it comes across a bit weird. On ITT last week, he sat with his hand on her knee like it was superglued there.
Maybe he is going overboard after the not so good body language with Richie last year too. I don't really give much heed to the way the couples put their arms around each other or whatever. It's just part of the show, imo. But there's definitely a trying hard element there with those two.
I saw him in Billy Elliott. He was fabulous in the role and has wonderful stage presence, even as a young boy. He trained for 9 months in dance and gymnastics to play that role. Yes he was a young boy but what excellent dance training that was to set him up for the future. I can’t imagine he’d get nervous much either and comes across as someone who excels in front of an audience. He’s a wonderful performer and a joy to watch but hardly on the same level as the others.
I did think Shirley over did it with her criticism for him however maybe because it's I've watched the show for so long but I always feel a bit dubious seeing certain things. It was almost like TPTB wanted him to be pulled down a bit in scores and comments this week so he could have more of a journey to show he is not doing a Kelvin Fletcher 2.0. Its obvious that Layton will be the highest scorer overall but he will obviously not win the show and he is a very ringey ringer so this by default gives Nigel the space to hide more of his experience and go on more of a journey.
yep - i think she’s actually done him and katya a huge favour (whether she meant to or not!)
like you say, another week of a 30+ score and people start getting a little bored. as it is, he’s had some “harsh” comments and social media is full of people riding to his defence ready for him to start the journey of getting praise from her again. combined with how gracefully he took the feedback too, it only helps him.

My first thought when I heard Shirley comment's wasn't ''poor him'' it was ''this will help him''.
If this is going the way it's looking then we are getting a Kelvin 2.0; obviously in a different type of way but its making me yawn internally as what has put me off the show in the past number of years is how early the winner is decided. Obviously I'm still going to watch as other couples have been doing well and I'm sure we are going to get some great dances from a good number of the couples but I've already prepared for whats looks like is going to happen.
Bobby - Totally forgettable dance aside from one lift being cool. It's plain he's putting next to no effort in and I'll fume if he gets to the final (unless he improves both his dancing and attitude super bleeping quickly.)
Annabel - Nothing special but a decent effort.
Jody - A few moments were quite good, shame about the rest of it! Jowita should not have included the cape bit when he couldn't do it better than that.
Ellie - Not sure about a few moments in the choreography there, sorry Vito, but very well danced and acted. Loving these two and looking forward to more.
Nigel - Good Lord, surprised Shirley's tone didn't turn him to stone! I'm sure she was right about whatever was wrong with it but sheesh, calm down! Or is it all a ploy to make sure he wins by getting the audience outraged early? I've always suspected the reason she was so nasty to Emma Barton was to make sure Anton got to the finale on a wave of furious votes. Anyway I bleeping hate that song due to how overused it is on cute baby and animal videos on Instagram but I still loved the dance, my second favourite of the night after Layton's. Great choreography and storytelling, and Katya's dress (and Katya) was gorgeous!
Nikita - The routine was so basic, poor girl simply can't dance, but she definitely performed much better than last week. Gorka did well to get so much improvement out of her, but there's no way she'll be around for much longer.
Les - Not sure Nancy has quite the same knack for joke routines as Katya, unfortunately. He gave it a good go!
Adam - For an actor, his tango face was pretty bad. Like Annabel - decent but not memorable.
Amanda - Didn't really like it, but pretty impressive for a 50 something year old. Her strengths are obviously in ballroom though. I'm not usually massively opposed to the spreadeagle lifts but that one was quite bad, the feathers made it look dodgier than usual! Agree with others who've said it felt joyless.
Zara - In the minority of loving the dress! Her frame was a bit wobbly by the end but a big improvement on last week. I think if she can conquer her nerves she could go a bit further than it seemed from last week.
Krishnan - Also in the minority of not totally hating Lauren's dress. I'm not sure I would've even noticed it was denim if it hadn't been shown on ITT. The crop top thing that looked more like a bra was a weird choice, but at least the dress was sparkly! Anyway Krishnan's dancing wasn't the greatest, obviously, but at least he looked like he was having a good time! I fear he doesn't have enough free time to improve a lot though.
Eddie - Enjoyed the dance, sadly have to agree with the judges that it bore little resemblance to a cha cha. Will be interested to see what/if Karen has to say in its defense on ITT. Feel bad for Eddie, he handled the comments well.
Angela S - Sorry Carlos, second horrible jive choreography from you, or maybe I just don't like jives, lol. You could see the Irish Dance training in places, I think I expected a bit more from her though, but maybe not as much was transferrable as I was expecting. Felt it was all just a bit messy, but they were stuck with a horrible theme.
Angela R - I was worried she'd struggle with the shorter rehearsal time, but she did really well, and Kai's choreography was perfect for her.
Layton - I wish their outfits hadn't been quite so boring, but other than that, amazing! Have already rewatched several times. Nikita's choreography was fantastic, and you can see he's having a ball being able to go all out. So excited to see more from them. Editors did Layton dirty with that VT though. I assume he was joking but oof that drama queen whinging about the word basic is not gonna win him a lot of votes!
Feel bad for Les going out on that awful joke Samba. It was the right decision but I'm sad he didn't get to have a nice dignified Waltz before going.
Irish Dancing can be quite rigid but there are some things that will help Angela in certain dances, turned out feet, pointed toes, straight legs but I don't think it gives her as much help as people would think.

Why would they go with youth lol? They almost always do the opposite, I also don’t think Nigel will be touching a dance off if he keeps this up considering he has a huge fanbase. Layton will never win, Bobby might peak too soon, Ellie definitely has a chance though. I can definitely see those being the final 4 as things stand right now.

My daughter used to watch the CBBC show he was in called School for Stars. She said he was known as a triple threat because he could do it all..sing, dance and act. So I do think it’s a bit daft he’s on strictly when he’s more or less a professional himself!
Out of those three at the minute the only one I can definitely see beating Nigel in a dance off is Layton. I would say Ellie has potential but I don't think Bobby ever would.
Back again with my thoughts that no one asked for…
Bobby - thought it was a decent charleston but i didn’t love it. they both make me cringe, but he danced it well
Annabel - not as good as last week but was better then i thought it would be. a bit shaky but some good parts too
Jody - wasn’t great but i have to give him credit for giving it a go. most of it was a bit stompy and he didn’t give much performance, jowita was
Ellie - loved every single second of it. her technique was amazing and the dancing overall was so pretty and nice to watch. i wondered how vito would do with a beginner but he’s really impressing me with his teaching & choreography. just hope she doesn’t peak too early…
Nigel - although it wasn’t as good as last week i thought he was undermarked. thought shirley was unnecessarily rude but all she’s done is pushed more people into supporting & voting for him, which is good for the nigel fans on the thread his acting skills were amazing and they are a stunning partnership
Nikita - sorry to say it but i really didn’t enjoy it, i have found both of her dances seriously underwhelming. it had no energy and no swivel. she needed a breakthrough to avoid the dance off so think she might be in trouble this week
Les - bless his heart, i love him but it was bad. love that he still gave it a go. not really a fan of how shirley was with him compared to nigel but that’s for another time
Adam - i thought it was actually alright. some obvious mistakes that he was beating himself up for but nowhere near the worst of the night. one of the hardest dances out of the way for him now and i still think he will show much more improvement as the weeks go on. i know he’s not popular on this thread but i really like his partnership with luba
Amanda - crappy person, amazing dancing. i wanted to hate it but it was pretty good. not a fan of the wig and i hated the lifts (regardless of who does them) but the rest was great
Krishnan - i love this guy so much. he knows he’s not the best but gives it a go anyway, i think if they stick around we will see some genuine improvement from them. lauren’s dress was hideous
Eddie - really not impressed. his dancing was ok but there was no ccc in that at all, which isn’t even his fault. karen has been on the show for over a decade yet she still couldn’t choreograph a basic latin routine … hope she gets it together because it’s unfair to eddie otherwise. had him down as a dark horse but not so sure now
Zara - definitely better than last week but still shaky & nervous. i think her confidence will grow as the weeks go on so hopefully she sticks around
Angela S - one of my favourites of the night. i was a bit worried after seeing her rehearsal footage but i absolutely loved it, her energy was amazing. like vito i have been really impressed with carlos’ choreo, they are a brilliant pairing and so fun to watch
Angela R - i almost felt quite emotional watching her. i don’t want to go on about her age but for her to be doing this at almost 80 is unbelievable, and she’s not just getting sympathy votes either because she’s actually a very good dancer. kai is a gentleman and they are one of my favourite partnerships this year
Layton - BEST OF THE NIGHT. wow, this is why i will never be against having trained dancers on the show. the whole thing was amazing, and although it still had some flashy moments i can see that nikita has already started to calm him down and make sure he focuses on the basics. so happy for him that he’s been rewarded after 2 brilliant years with tilly & ellie … he has quickly become one of the best pros on the show.
Thought Shirley was a witch all night but nothing new I suppose, the actual show was great though!
Just catching up with last night's show. They really, really, really need to get some new singers for the performances. They stick out like a sore thumb now.
This is the interview where Layton lays out all his training and experience. It's quite extensive - some will care, others will think he's not winning anyway so we may as well have amazing dances.
Ahh I’m so torn normally I hate all the “pReViOuS eXpErIEnCe” chat and I love when someone’s good but when you’ve actually studied dance and taken exams in it it’s unfair that you would be in a competition with the likes of Les Dennis.

I really love the Ellie and Vito partnership. She’s been the biggest shock personality wise for me, maybe she actually is a decent actress as I couldn’t stand moody Faye in Corrie and presumed she was the same. Putting her with Vito was a great choice

It’s not that he has previous dance experience that bothers me. It’s the glossing over of said previous experience and trying to make out he has only been in the it’s all about Jamie stage show. It’s sneaky ..
I guess he really wanted to do it for so long, he wasn't going to turn it down.
And e.g James Bye last year - I think Amy was going to the Eastenders set, sometimes, to practise with him.
I imagine if you're on the Beeb, it's a case of now it's your turn, regardless of other commitments.
I don't want him going down the Will Mellor route though, apologising. Just give it his best shot, he seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself anyway, and it's lovely to see Luba in action.
I think if you are on the Beeb it’s your turn now because of commitments.
They like the cross promotion of trailing one show on another. How many times have we had Eastenders people who are in a big Christmas storyline meaning their early training is limited …I lost count of how many times Kellie and Emma told us how many Christmas dinners they had had to munch through.
I think Karen has steadily got worse as a pro.
Last year (was it last year? I get muddled ) with Jayde was a disaster. I know Jayde was a poor dancer and another one who was overly praised, but Karen's choreography was consistently dreadful. Lots of Jayde standing still with Karen whirling around her.
I think she sees strictly as an easy money source which is fine but when it’s at the expense of someone else ( who is really keen to give dancing a go) and you get given “ don’t give a duck Karen” it’s sad for them.
