But tbh, they clearly get on absolutely fine, but there is a certain awkwardness. I guess they're just not really sure how to play it yet (Giovanni can't do his usual protective arm draped across the shoulders and partner almost sat his his lap thing)

I think that no matter what they say now that narrative will cling to them. I agree they don't know how to play it: Gio often does the 'pretending to be annoyed with his partner' thing in training videos or on ITT but now they can't use that!

Apparently that awful Allison Pearson has written a crappy article in the Torygraph slating this year's same-sex and disabled partnerships. John Whaite has called it out really well on his insta stories today. BUT LadyLav is over on the AT saying that basically any criticism or speculation about Richie and Gio not getting on is homophobic, which is ridiculous. The bread and butter of fans and journos watching the show is a) are they shagging and b) do they hate each other?

Every year there is a pairing that’s supposed the feewwwddddiiinnnn’. It’s a Strictly storyline staple at this point. Somewhere Victoria Pendleton is thinking … yeah, that was the problem. Brendan just didn’t fancy me.

John’s stories were brilliant. I feel a bit for Richie, he’s got a double-whammy of John being the benchmark for gay men in same sex partnerships and Rose + Gio/John & Johannes’ chemistry and friendship being the benchmark for a good partnership (and a third aspect of them both being good dancers) to contend with when he’s a totally different person in his own year with his own Strictly experience to have.

I know he’s a bit of a marmite character but I really hope all for this doesn’t spoil his enjoyment of it. He obviously adores the show but I can’t imagine he thought it would end up with these headlines after the first week.

I agree. I admit, I always found him an irritant on ITT and I didn't like the routine on Saturday, but he's totally harmless and on absolute cloud 9 - nobody deserves to be made to feel like crap for being on the show.

To be fair, we were just working off some of the very cringey Insta posts, which while showing him to be very attractive, were quite full on, and also didn't show personality.

Becauase I was the same and honestly so far he seems better than Gio, not full on flirt sleaze.

The dates nearest me don’t work for me this time but I’d never buy tickets blind without knowing the cast. Last time I went in jan 2019 I bought my ticket about a week before the show when knew who and what dances I’d be seeing. I’ve not warmed to any celebs yet either which doesn’t help.

Also the fact he got together with his celeb on the Italian version. But yeah, I agree, that he is quite sweet and goofy: more a Graziano than a Gio (in terms of public persona..)
