I feel like Richie is maybe a bit of a waste of a same-sex pairing. He's not a good dancer, not especially likeable or a big signing for the show. Whilst it should be the celeb's choice and not every same-sex pairing is going to be as good at dancing as John, the show are going to want one anyway and I think they could have found someone better for it.

Obviously Gio had to get a dud this year but this will likely be his one and only experience with a same-sex partner and it's likely a negative one when he would have been able to bring a lot to the table with someone else.

Like him or not, I do hope Ritchie has a lovely time on the show. He clearly loves Strictly, and he was so deeply enthusiastic about it beforehand that is would be a real shame if he had a shoddy experience because of either Gio checking out, Twitter being horrid to him or the papers printing unproven gossip.
Same! I wouldn't be Richies biggest fan but it felt a bit unprofessional of Gio to be so obviously bemused by the scores and to look embarrassed. He owes Richie the same respect as everyone else. If he can act well enough to convince everyone he's in love with all his other partners, he can act like he likes being Richies partner. I felt sad for Richie that Gio didn't repost anything after Saturday when Richie made a whole story about how great Gio is and how he's honoured to dance with him.

I thought Richie came across very differently on The One Show than he did on Strictly - much more genuine and less OTT. I wonder if it's nerves making him try to be a massive personality? I think Giovanni could spin it if he goes on a journey where he finds himself like he did with Ranvir and Debbie. They could actually have a very interesting narrative about gay and straight masculine identity and societal expectations.

I would actually like to see that!

Anton knows what side his bread is buttered, he's always moved the way Strictly demanded.
  • You want trad ballroom? You get trad ballroom, no problem.
  • You want him to laugh at Brucie and Tess' jokes, and Craigs' occassional cruelties? Anton flashes his teeth like a hyena.
  • Take on the duffers? No problem, Anton gets paid just the same, and more time in December for panto, everyone wins!
  • Less ballroom, more Latin, they say? Here, have Ruth Langsfords' Samba, be careful what you wish for.
  • Same sex partnerships? Anton loves them, especially rumbas! (though being serious, his championing of John Waites' rumba was v. sweet)
  • Oh, it's COVID, Bruno can't be here and there is an increasing focus on Contemporary Dance? Here is your faithful servant Anton, selflessly prepared to resign as pro and be a nice cheerful judge on both a temporary (and permanent) basis, what a good friend to Strictly Anton is!

BIB made me laugh. That was hysterical.

I feel very bad for Ritchie, everyone on DS is all "Oh Gio! Poor Gio! He looks so uncomfortable! However is he going to cope with this bouncy and overexuberant male celeb?"

Well, Gio is the damn professional, he damn well needs to either figure it out, or suck it up and switch on a professional smile in the same way Janette, Anton, Karen et al. have all done through the years when they got a celeb they didn't click with immediately.

Poor Ritchie is getting dogs' abuse for the crime of being a very enthusiastic Strictly Superfan who did the very camp Week One routine he was taught, and it leaves a rather nasty taste in the mouth.

I actually think Gio could have done a great job with someone like John Whaite. When he has danced with Kai or Johannes before it looks great. It could have shown same sex couples in a really positive light. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to work in the same way with Richie.
To be fair, Gio has really just been given the standard partnership the year after a win. It just happens to be a same sex one.

I think Strictly has always shown same sex partnerships in a positive light, but they should also be allowed to show the same variety as every other partnership … good, poor, surprising, irritating and everything in between.

I saw the clip of Gio and Richie on The One Show and I don’t think it’s that bad. (Now been upgraded to a ‘feud!’).
I think Gio is trying his best but they just don’t have a huge amount of natural chemistry for whatever reason. And he can’t compensate with tactility. It’s a Laura Whitmore sitch.

The traffic guy off Radio 2 weekday mornings. Does Zoe Balls show and Ken Bruce. Zoe seems to love him, Ken seems to tolerate him.
Honestly if they were going to have a BBC Radio 2 traffic presenter, it should have been Sally from a Saturday!
Ty... well seeing I skipped his tripe at the intro and I don't listen to rad2. He was a bit excited bless him x

In an age of equality, for every Debbie McGee there will be a John Sargent or Ann Widdecombe so it stands to reason there will be a counter balance to John Whaite. To have an amazing dancer in every same sex couple wouldn't be realistic or fair, although I still stand by my thoughts that if it really is about the dancing and not about the sexuality, there is no need whatsoever to have one or both of the said couple lesbian or gay. Ritchie would have been supported and carefully calmed by someone like Nadiya. Mind you, can you imagine him and Janette??

Nicola Adams wasn’t very good either. As long as they don’t stop having the option I don’t think it matters if the same sex partnership does well or not. Equal opportunity for mediocre dancers!
