She’ll never pick up the time or her times tables because the work is so unstimulating and she’ll never remember it. Steve sees this as an opportunity to stick the same sheet in front of her for months on end instead of using an actual clock to help her or using counters to help with her times tables. Surely this is proving more than ever that her anxieties in the classroom weren’t the only reason she wasn’t learning a thing and that specialist help is clearly needed.

Exactly this I wonder if they will get told to change things up when they have a review of their homeschooling, I think someone else said (can’t remember who sorry) that they only give a return to school order if something really bad was going on at home (which obviously isn’t happening it’s just the very basic lessons they’re giving her). So maybe nothing will be said?
 
It’s just laziness, as always. He just puts a worksheet in front of her and leaves her to it. Doesn’t go over it or anything. At school, they usually do work beforehand that would be covered on a worksheet. People home educate in all different ways, but this is seriously lazy. PE is sitting in a hot tub, art is drawing a picture, life skills is tidying your room?! All the other kids are at school all day, do homework and still tidy their room. Lacey could easily be given some more work to do after the others are home and are doing homework. I wonder how long he’s going to keep her at this level??
 
If anything all this has proved is that the school is not at fault for Lacey being so far behind because she has been doing the same work for 7 months and hasn't progressed. Maybe if they were working alongside the school at home things would be different. I never saw them do any additional work with her at home to reinforce the teaching at school.

Some people don't seem to understand that a school can not be responsible for teaching a child everything, it is the parents responsibility to work alongside them in order for there child to progress. If your child is struggling it is your responsibility to step in and help as well.

I don't know about anyone else but I think she has regressed so much since leaving school. I know she found the whole environment very difficult but all we see her doing now is just sitting there at a desk in her coat doing the same work day in day out no interaction with anyone but her parents and when she isn't doing her hour of learning she is playing Minecraft.

I wouldn't even know that the desk was for her because it doesn't look like a home school desk. There is no clock above the desk, no posters, no books, no draws full of resources and colourful teaching aids and stationary; its all just shoved underneath.
 
If YouTube is his job but Sophie is editing his vlogs now, surely it’s not his job anymore? So he’s doing nothing. He doesn’t reply to comments hardly either. He sure isn’t using his time home schooling Lacey. He was sunbathing outside while she was stuck inside looking at a work sheet on her own last week. Poor Lacey. He’s ruining her day by day
 
My daughter has just started high school . She is so excited about musical instruments, science experiments, learning all about history , doing basketball and trampolines . Also cooking( not melting chocolate like Steve thinks is a lesson ) needle work and wood work . I could go on and on . That’s just a few of the things she is doing. What on earth is he thinking .
 
Something definitely needs to change for poor Lacey. She deserves to be supported and helped she has so much potential that will be lost soon if nothing changes. I’ve just caught up with the last couple of vlogs and I’m still amazed they still keep Wednesdays as “shopping days” rather than homeschool her when they get back. It just makes me think that Rachel could stay at home with Lacey whilst Steve shops as he is the only one who is able to drive. But then he’s said before he finds it very difficult to shop alone, due to anxiety. Which then begs the question of is it really necessary to go in the week and go on the weekend, so Lacey gets an actual full week of school each week.

At first I thought maybe it’s a temporary measure before the summer holidays and they would adjust it once back at school, they would adjust the routine. But instead it seems like they are homeschooling Lacey around their routine rather than the other way around. If it was too difficult to shop on the weekend for Steve (due to the shops being busy and too anxiety inducing) they could have a home delivery. Especially now slots will be more available. I know they shop for Val and Bill which is understandable and important, it just seems like they aren’t actively trying to reduce the time they are out of the house. Shopping doesn’t take 8 hours a day…they could easily teach her before and after.
 
When they first mentioned 'Home schooling' I actually thought it was a really good idea and that they had made the right choice.

However now I think they are just using it as an excuse for Steve to stay at home all day and not get a job.

Lets be honest here, they are doing nothing at all in order to help her. They threw away the opportunity for her to go to a specialist school probably because they didn't want to drive there and back. The main problem is her anxiety and paranoia and that is what is going to make getting a job and living independently hard for her. Yet she is not receiving any support for that in the form of therapy or counselling. Do they honestly want her to be a dependent all her life?

Instead of supporting and encouraging her through things they just simply take her worries away and remove her from the situation. That is not how the real world works!

They are not putting her first and you can clearly see that. They are not doing this for Lacey, they are doing this for themselves. They are moulding her into a mini Steve.
 
The homeschooling her is definitely to prevent being forced to find work! Unfortunately Lacey won’t be given opportunities and will be just like dad. It’s such a shame as she is just at the peak age of her education as well with being secondary school age. They could have started her at a new sen school where all others in her class would be new too and she could have actually learned and grasped subjects with the teachers help. It’s such a shame they think of themselves too much and not those poor kids.

I think they had another baby so Steve could continue to be a stay at home dad. The twins were around 5 at the time and he would've been made to apply for jobs. And when Chloe went to school, they got Lacey's diagnosis and her award of DLA, he can now be her carer, so he's conveniently off the hook again.
I'm not Rachael and maybe she doesn't want to get married, but if I had 4 children to the same man, I'd want to. Or at least an
engagement! Steve doesn't seem to take responsibility for much.

I agree she so isolated it's not good for her.
Regarding Val and Bill to be honest they probably have enough going on with Bill's health etc
They probably have mentioned it but Steve seems to think he's doing fine with homeschooling.

I think they did have Chloe for that reason too, such a shame! Then when she started school they were thinking right how do we get out of this one! I also think they had Chloe for the ability to get a bigger house which obviously worked.

I remember Rachel disappointed that Chloe was a girl and not a boy. To me I don’t get that but that’s because I’ve been through infertility and Ivf so would welcome either.
 
I am not sure if they realise how much this is going to impact Lacey's future.

One day she is going to have to live independently and she is in for a HUGE shock, they are not preparing her at all.

Steve has openly said that they don't have to follow the national curriculum. Does that mean they don't intend on her doing GCSE'S? I know that GCSE'S are not the most important thing but not having any formal qualifications is going to make it very hard for her to get a job! If she was at a specialist school or even a mainstream school they would make sure that she left with some kind of qualification. Unless they just intend on being her carer and allowing her to play on Minecraft into her 30s and 40s?

Education is so important. It not only helps you in the future but it also teaches you very important life skills that she is missing out on like making friends.

Most parents find out that there child has additional needs and go out of there way to do everything they can in order to help and support them but they are literally doing the bare minimum.
 
They said at the time that Chloe wasn't planned but it has definitely worked in their favour. I still think she'd have suited the name Katie better than she does Chloe. I remember Steve wanted to call her that but Rache's suggestion won (fair enough if she's carrying the baby).

Even lower skilled jobs require some form of qualification. Getting onto an apprenticeship requires qualifications. Encouraging her to do a foundation level maths and English GCSE would be infinitely better than her not having any qualifications at all. Steve goes on about all the grim jobs he had because he's thick (his words not mine ;)) and had no option to climb the career ladder yet he doesn't push his kids to do better. Its weird. She's at an age where help for her anxiety could really improve how she is in situations and plenty of autistic people find a path in life that suits them but she won't even be able to try if she has no qualifications. I hate the concept of exams but thats just how the system works at the moment unfortunately.
