Year 7 is the first year of comprehensive school and year 11 is the final year. We have a year 12 and 13 too which would be 6th form/further education in the school setting. I’m pretty sure they now have to go in to year12/13 or to college at 16 rather than out to work so she will be leaving education in 4 years. Maybe she will go in to learn something in college and show her dad what work is? Or maybe she will start something and never work!

Is home schooling regulated at all? If so, won’t they basically fail Steve and Rache in all areas as there isn’t an adequate situation going on at home? She’s doing the equivalent of what kids get sent for homework but as the full days work :/ . I am very pro ‘active learning’ and not just shoving worksheets in front of children and expecting them to be inspired but she isn’t even getting decent worksheets. When will they realise that clearly the method of sitting her at a table and repeating the same worksheets will do absolutely nothing for her seeing as she can’t grasp a concept that most 5 year olds can. She’s had her autism diagnosis for years now so they should have researched enough to know that giving her the same things that didn’t work at school isn’t going to do anything just because she happens to be sat in her own kitchen. I’m not an SEN expert but it’s clearly not just the uncomfortable school environment that’s hindered her education when she is still struggling with basic work at home.

I think the problem is they aren’t doing home visits to check up on what is being done at home. I am not being mean but really I think they could sit Lacey infront of sheets to learn the time for the next year and she still wont grasp it. It’s why the specialist school should be helping her so she can have a chance when she is adult . She is not getting the education of someone who is nearly 12. He said himself she has forgotten everything over summer. So why on earth are they taking the entire day off on Wednesday as they go shopping in the morning . Home schooling is flexible she could do it anytime. Why did they not spend the summer going over things .

Honestly it’s so frustrating when they know what she’s like; they know she can’t even remember what day it is and what day comes next yet they think sitting her in front of a worksheet is going to magically solve all of her struggles when it comes to education just because she’s doing it from the comfort of her own home. The specialist school could’ve been the making of her but they packed it in because their visit kept being cancelled. I know it must’ve been frustrating but I’m sure there are children with a range of conditions, some who will be very vulnerable to covid more so than at a mainstream school, so they shouldn’t have just put it down to the school being unreliable when they were probably being very responsible by closing.

I'm in Scotland, so not entirely sure of the rules in England. My son is home educated, it's not regulated as such, but I do have to submit an annual report of what we've covered in the last year and what our plans are for the coming year. But it doesn't have to be extremely detailed or anything. You have to show you're giving your child an education appropriate for their needs and ability. You can get a Return to School Order if they aren't satisfied, but I've never known anyone personally who's had that, so not sure how bad you'd need to be for that to happen. I think that's also mostly used where there's concerns in general for a child other than just education.


As expected Lacey's homeschool was a pathetic excuse for education. If he was home schooling Chloe, he'd be doing not too bad, even then it wouldn't be enough quantity wise, but ability wise it would be. Lacey is almost 12, she's not being given enough work or even the right work. He claims she struggles taking stuff in and has forgotten a lot over the summer, well if you know this, why let her do nothing but sit on her laptop playing roblox all summer! She's not even being taught anything, nobody sits with her and explains anything or find methods that work so no wonder she's not taking it in. You could maybe give them a bit more slack if they where working on her anxiety with the aim of getting her back into school but they're not even doing that. Give him some credit though - he took her out the front door today to get a leaf! 🤣 A better option would have been taking her on a walk somewhere and collected leaves at the same time.

I genuinely don't think Lacey's 4 day school week adds up to even 1 school day length that Laim does. I think she does about 1.5hrs a day, 4 days a week because for some reason Lacey's education isn't as important as going shopping and they couldn't possibly do any school work after being at the shops! 🙄
