Oh dear Si. Time for one of your famous pranks to lighten the mood.

Well with Simon on the bench, the Echo might feature you if you're prepared to gurn for the camera and rattle a grifting tin?

This is a true lightbulb moment. I could be the next Essex based grifter to fill the enormous void left by the bulk of Harris. I’ll have my own dedicated Tattle thread one day, you’ll see!

Anybody got Jeremy Vines number?

And wait... what do we have here?

The Prince of Wales pub being used by whom? Whom may you ask?

That would be Mid and South Essex ICS. And whom may I ask used (empasis on the word "used") to work there?

Did they get paid for hosting this event? I wonder?

That’s a very odd venue choice, especially compared to the rest. I happen to know it well, and while it’s a nice enough place, it’s not central or easy to get to via public transport. Arse end of nowhere in fact, but still not central for the Dengie area.

Was that you?! That makes me laugh so much I was nearly sick.

If Simon had safety concerns in July why only delete all social media now?

I can only take a very minuscule amount of credit for the amazing wiki page. @witchofwestbyfleet has done all of the heavy lifting there. She wrote all the interesting, informative and accurate stuff. I just added a couple of stupid bits when I was bored in a pointless work call.

If there was money floating around for it though, I’d be making sure I got an extortionate amount, whilst the person who came up with the original idea and did most of the work got shafted and left with very little, that’s how these things seem to work 🤔

Much of my ire is directed at Essex County Council to be frank. Prior to them paying Simon all this money for the coronavirus info and support there were already amazing community hubs doing similar work at a fraction of the cost. They were picking up medication for people and delivering, maintaining contact with housebound folk, ensuring shopping was bought and delivered erc. In fact one of my 100+yr old patients had a volunteer who kindly continued doing his shopping well after the pandemic and up to his death.

All this was done willingly by volunteers along with support from community voluntary services across mid and south Essex, and their role also included social media. All it needed was someone who could advise on social media - this could have meant SImon but at much less cost. the same community hubs are still out there, still supporting people, still liaising with health and social care as needed to meet urgent needs and it costs the tax payer less than £25k a year. Imagine what they could do with the money Simon was paid.

Serious questions need asking about how such decisions were made.

From the Leader of the Opposition at ECC, in the BBC piece

"Mr Mackrory said he had asked council officers questions about the payments and added: 'I do wonder why it was necessary to go to this individual when we do have a pretty high-powered communications team at ECC itself.' "

Hopefully means this won't be allowed to rest if the councillors are on the case.

I think this will be a big problem for him. With the cuts to budgets Essex are making, this is an easy one for opposition councillors to keep going at and I don't think many Labour councillors are going to be putting their reputation on the line for him.
