I know we’ve moved on (in the chat and in the world) but I was prime SATC viewer demographic when it first came out in the 90’s and have watched it over and over. I know they’re all ‘problematic’ now but I still have a soft spot for them despite their total lack of self-awareness and lack of consideration for others. Plus, and I know it isn’t fashionable anymore but bloody hell, Carrie/SJP’s body was insane. I had an active* ED for years. Her body was both amazing and massively triggering. Plus, all the interviews where she (SJP) said she didn’t work for it, even though she was clearly toned af.

*I say ‘active’ as even though it is largely under control, I still lapse occasionally when stress levels get unmanageable, so I don‘t consider myself recovered,

I forgot about that quote 🤢🤢🤢
Robert was the biggest catch in the whole show imo, he was sooo fit

1000x YES. Trey was sexually repellent

Trey with the cardboard baby though. I’d have been furious/devastated if I had fertility problems and my partner bought me that as a joke.

Also when Trey whines “but darling, I’m juicy now!” something inside of me dies. Boak.
I didn't like Trey at all, but I feel like Charlotte only has herself to blame for the mess their relationship was. She was just desperate to marry someone rich and from a "good" family, it was her choice not to have sex before marriage, had she not dont that she probably would have realised the relationship wouldn't work before getting married, or even engaged

True but that was largely to do with her WASP upbringing, she was a traditionalist because those were the conservative values she was raised with and it had been drilled into her that ‘good girls don‘t...’ all through her life. The post-Trey storylines were her trying to break out of those years of conditioning. So yes, she did ‘choose’ to marry someone from a “good“ family etc but that decision wasn’t made in a vacuum, she was basically bred to do it, it was expected of her and she was just following the path laid out.

True... but it is not like she was a virgin before was it?

Robert was so hot! Though it was a bit cringe after Miranda had dumped him and he confronted her in the stairwell, going on about his "stud fee" and impersonating her sex noises!
Though it was pretty hilarious when she relayed the encounter back to Steve-his face when she said Robert had reminded her how she'd told him "no man had ever been in so deep" 😂😂😂 Steve looked like a kicked puppy!!

Finished my rewatch. Here is my list of people who deserved better:

Skipper - they were so mean to him just for being a bit geeky.

Natasha - she was so lovely and kind and they just ripped her life apart.

Aiden - he put up with a lot of tit from Carrie, I'd have walked way earlier than he did. She didn't deserve that beautiful ring.

Smith - again, absolute sweetheart who deserved a happy ending and he put up with Samantha being so cold for a long time.

Robert- he was a great catch and didn't deserve to be cheated on.

Feel free to add to the list!
Stanford should have been allowed to be happy in the Hamptons with Marcus not married off to Anthony for a storyline and Liza.

I would say Candace Bergen’s editor but she ends up with Wallace Shawn who was in the Princess Bride so I’m happy with that. I think he’s great.

If we are including the films Samantha was done dirty. She should have ended up in LA with her beautiful man and not been bullied by SJP for being older than them.

Miranda should have stayed with the hot doctor

I’m watching it now, wtf was with Carrie inviting Big to Aidan’s country house and not telling him until he was literally pulling up in the car?! What a dick move
That made me so 😤

My god he was gorgeous 🤤 I couldn’t believe Miranda jacked him in

Steves girlfriend Debbie who has the temerity to have ‘Acrylic shoes and nails’. Seems really sweet and kind but gets dumped as soon as Miranda curls a finger in Steve’s direction.

I also thought Tre got treated pretty badly, he made it clear that Charlotte’s fertility issues weren’t a problem for him and that he was content for them to be child free. He then got dumped for not going along with an international adoption- that he wasn’t even consulted on.
Not forgetting that Charlotte had previously snogged the family gardener and humiliated him in front of his family however it was apparently justified, - as Charlotte hadn’t had sex for 2 whole months!
Imagine if it was the other way round.

Ah yes, I forgot Debbie!

On rewatch I can see how they all pander to Carrie. Which is so annoying, I can only think that Carrie is based on a real life person, that Candice Bushnell does not like very much! Samantha and Miranda were the best ones, I would love a show with just them navigating getting older-maybe they throw Carrie a pity dinner and laugh at her sad life! Like they should have done all the way through SATC.

God I'm so happy to have found this thread! I watched the movies when they came out but only recently finished watching the show. It's been such a comfort during lockdown, even when they're unlikeable and privileged beyond belief! Going back to read everyone's great insights ☺ For any fellow nerds I'd really recommend the Origins podcast and Sentimental In The City podcast!
