Agree re. Tom Ford fragrances. Bye redo are nice but expensive.

i never pay attention to use by dates with cosmetics and I’m still standing. I expect the stuff they’re filled with is unhealthy whether in date or not! And I just cannot throw stuff away if it seems alright.

Exactly! Surely use your nose, eyes? Seems another way to make you throw away something perfectly alright into landfill and buy another one.

Ooh, a bodice ripper?

OFF TOPIC, but does anyone have an opinion on Tom Ford fragrances? Thinking of buying Santal Blush

I love TF fragrances, just can’t stomach the price. They are luxe, yes, but the markup must be huge. If there’s a high end fragrance I love but can’t afford I check out the forums on Fragrantica, there’s usually a decent alternative. For Santal Blush:

The Tom Ford bottles are so lovely though.

@Jelly Bean, same here- the having 12 lip balms in different bags (car, pockets etc) reminded me of the trusted QVC sales pitch trickery. It’s nothing else but normalising spending and over-consumption.

Re: perfumes, worth spending a few quid on a tester if unsure before buying a full product. So pleased I did that for Le Labo Santal 33 as I really did not get on with it.

Adam Levine has fragrances?! Who knew? (Probably all of you)

I have testers for all these, but it's hard for me to tell what I'll tire of though, especially with Santal 33. I read a review where someone said it smelled like a cross between a hamster cage and an open jar of pickles, which left me second-guessing myself ... :ROFLMAO:

Quite the evocative description indeed, @melfish.

One of the biggest perfume disappointments for me was Narcisso Rodriguez For Her (the original one) which I absolutely loved but somehow stopped being able to smell it on myself after a few wears. I’m sure something to do with the chemistry of my skin and the perfume...

Few fragrances smell as they should on me. They are always really acrid to my nose. Like I love love loved Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle Intense when I smelled it on someone else, so I impulsively got my aunt to buy it for me duty free on her way to visit me, and it just smells meh on me. It never seems to dry down

Has anyone watched Nadine Bagott’s recent YouTube video on autumn fragrances? She has an off beat taste in fragrance and a great way of explaining it and I am here for it.

I had no idea how much her columns were actually enhanced by the “when my lips are cracked I douse them in three week old fish & chip shop fryer grease and in no time I have the lips of someone 50 years younger; I know because total strangers tell me so on an hourly basis” comments. Says a lot.
Yes, there was some entertainment there - as well as a wide range of opinions and recommendations.

If the Guardian can no longer allow comments on a column, perhaps they could simply set the topic for a weekly readers' discussion on something beauty related.

Try the Perfume Parlour dupes, they’re great plus better staying power.

Which format do you usually buy from them? I am used to spray perfumes so want to veer to that but I get the impression they rate their roll on oils as best. I was put off by the mention of ethanol in their sprays but for all I know all my perfumes have ethanol in them.

I find them quite variable. I own Violet Blonde (discontinued unfortunately), White Patchouli, Noir Pour Femme, Velvet Orchid and Plum Japonais, plus the Neroli Portofino body mist. Plum Japonais lasts and lasts on my skin, as does Violet Blonde. The others don't last as long and I think they are gorgeous but over priced. The Neroli Portofino is so fleeting, a real shame as it's lovely. I had a sample of Santal Blush, which I love, but found it didn't last long so I wouldn't be prepared to pay the asking price for it.

That's a lotta Tom Ford. Really helpful, thank you

My most recent from them has been a small spray of the Creed Island Water one and it’s been great, really good lasting power.
