It’s not an easy situation re Valencia. We are going. We could still cancel but are choosing to go. The area does need the money and the organisers and sponsors are pledging money for rebuilding sports centres and schools in the affected areas, and athletes are encouraged to donate too, as well as the money the athletes and supporters will bring to local hospitality facilities, and the knock on effect that has on the employees (extra shifts, tips, etc). The race brings in tens of millions to the city, probably more than ever this year. If the infrastructure is ready and the race can be used for good to help rebuild the surrounding areas, as well as bring in the income that the city expected, then I think it can be justified. I know there is a risk that it may be cancelled last minute even, but then we will just continue to spend our money to there. It’s not about the marathon, it’s about the community and what the event can bring.
I absolutely respect anyone who does not agree and does not want to run for whatever reason (except influencers who are just pulling out because they won’t get the fluff they expect - and kudos to NB for recognising that the influencer fluff is particularly distasteful in these circs - just run it muted, out of the limelight, or at least use your profile to encourage people to donate to the area while running it?). I really can see all the reasons for and against. Perhaps it really is just down to money that it is going ahead, but if good can come on top of that, to help rebuild areas and bring some positivity after the anguish, then I can get behind that.
