Ruby Granger #47 Self Learning at the University of Roobs, Manor campus

Maybe I’m daft to seriously critique this podcast but the contradiction that jumped out the most to me was their first point being 1) neither of them experienced any academic pressure from school or family, it was all intrinsically-driven, immediately followed by 2) the bulk of the podcast being a complaint about academic pressure and how to combat it.

Like… is that an acknowledgment that self righteous studytuber content was the problem all along? Because it should have been but didn’t seem to be.

Like… is that an acknowledgment that self righteous studytuber content was the problem all along? Because it should have been but didn’t seem to be.

Unfortunately, they'll never fess up to being a big part of the problem. Too much of Ruby's entirely fake brand is rooted in "kindness" and being honest and exceedingly productive. To come clean and say "I lied about most things and faked almost all my videos to show myself doing far more than is possible in a day, then a lot of kids put themselves through the ringer trying to hold themselves to a literally impossible standard that I set" would completely unravel the whole narrative that her online persona hinges on.

The Sixteenth studytubers all pushed the toxic productivity model as a key to success and they're all complicit in pushing and romanticising those toxic productivity habits, but none of them will ever say "I did this and I need to apologise". Instead, they just reframed the lie. Since studytube largely died, their narrative has now become: "We were all victims of a cruel and unjust academic system, but I survived and thrived, now let me enlighten you to the toxic "hustle culture" standards and show you how to live your best life!"

Not long before Eve Cornwell gave up on her flagging influencer career and mercifully left the internet behind, she uploaded a video with the title card: "The Toxic Productivity Echochamber. (Spoiler: You're inside it.)" In it, she pointed the finger of blame everywhere but herself/studytubers and offered herself as an enlightened beacon to a better way. They've all done largely the same thing since and Ruby's been even worse. She'll pay lip service to the idea of unhealthy focus on grades and the toxic nature of "hossle colcha" with lots of "WE are treated like this by society's unfair expectations" nonsense but never acknowledges that she's the biggest culprit.

Worse yet, she still does it. She still uploads those staged vlogs in which she pretends to have a ridiculously productive 96-hour-long day and still completely lies about or massively embellishes all her accomplishments. She still throws tantrums over grades or makes a huge production of getting the grade she wanted and she still makes sure they keep tit like "Desired Grades" sections in the scam planner she shills.

It's why this podcast rings so hollow. It continues to push the completely fictional narrative that Ruby is exceedingly productive and overwhelmingly kind perfectionist with a genuine joy for learning. She was somehow a victim of an unfair academic system and was cruelly punished with rejection from Oxford, yet she came out on top and triumphed over adversity, now please go subscribe to her channel and buy her planner! (Yep, there's an undeclared planner ad section at the end.) It's framed as an honest, sit-down chat with lots of reflection, but there's no honesty or self-awareness on display, it's just a transparent marketing product peddling the same lies to keep the Sixteenth gravy train running.

We'll all critiquing only her taps, not the piles of rubbish all over, the dirt and dust caked on every surface, the frayed threadbare broken furniture, overgrown neglected garden. Has the person replying forgotten the video where Ruby swapped her regular double bed for a Victorian nursery cot and unearthed a dust bunny bigger than her?

Hope I can attach the video but someone made a TikTok about the nosense of studyTubers and Ruby gets mentioned a few times

Right on cue, all the usual predictable comments from studytube sycophants in the comments:

You're just jealous!
(Yes, because everyone's jealous of the fake life of toxic grifters and all valid criticism is clearly just "jealousy".

Would I love to never have to worry about money again? Sure! Do I want to live a morally bankrupt life of constant lies and do everything I can to scam gullible kids and/or charities out of their cash? Not for a second, thanks, I'd sooner be able to sleep at night.)

You can't write off studytube because [insert similarly toxic influencer here] is a saint!
(Sorry, nope, Eve Cornwell was on the same grift and did all the same tit, she was just less blatant about it and was smart enough to just let her failing channel die after a failed attempt at pivoting to ripping off Legal Eagle's content. Jack Edwards is even more of a shady, content-stealing, fan-scamming grifter. The core Sixteenth studytubers are all the same and were all pushing the same toxic grind habits wrapped in undeclared ads and lies. They've all now moved towards preaching self-care and claiming they were victims of "hustle culture" without addressing that they promoted it mercilessly to prop up their brand (and in most cases, still encourage it).)

But Ruby has a job! She runs a stationery company all by herself!
(Nahhh, her management company do everything, Ruby just lazily markets the brand (and even then, she farmed it out to her sister to make all PP content). Ruby is just allowed to take credit and pretend because her managers are shady as duck and the 'I designed everything and run the company myself' lie helps sell planners - it's a vanity merch brand, after all.

Even if you believe the lie that she designs all products herself, she launches 2 new planner lines a year (at most) and the design has been identical every time, so how much work do you think she's doing as an alleged "designer"?

This is exactly why she embellishes her 3-hours-a-week nepo jobs at her old school or her imaginary side-hustles into major careers - it's furthering the lie that she's insanely productive girlboss juggling six jobs and everything she gets is earned through grinding it out. It's a shield for her to hide behind when the "Ruby is privileged enough to never need to get a job" conversation comes up. It's all smoke and mirrors. Ruby does not have a job. Ruby has literally never worked a full day in her entire life. She's 24.)

Content creation is a job!
For good content creators who crank out original, high-quality and/or abundant content, sure. But Ruby hasn't come up with a new idea for a video in what feels like 8 years, it's just the same lazy, assembly-line vlogs and routine videos over and over.

Ruby does not film second takes. The editing of her videos has now been farmed out to her sister, but even when Ruby did edit them, she did not invest any time into it - clips were haphazardly thrown together (occasionally out of order) and music tossed on with no quality checks of any kind. She uploads a video a week. Most of her content is padded with footage cut from old videos. Filming a minute or two of random footage (of things she claims to be doing anyway) every couple of days to toss into a 15 minute video is not a job.

Ruby doesn't make problematic content anymore!
(*Points at the staged, undeclared-ad-filled vlogs in which Ruby swears blind that she had a 68 hour day in which she did a wide variety of (completely off-screen) "waaahrk" activities*

She makes the exact same content. She's just replaced 14 hours study days with 36 hour assortment of nebulous, fake "admin waaahrk" days.)

Ruby always acknowledges her privilege!
(Lip service is not acknowledgement.

Saying "I'm aware of my privilege!" and then swiftly moving on to shouting that we ALL need to take time away from our 46 hour day of busywork in our manor home to twirl in green fields and breathe the FRASH AEHR and go on 15 holidays a year without ever having to worry about paying bills is not it.

Telling everyone that they can start a successful business simply by signing up with sponsor Shopify without mentioning the immense financial support she got from her tax-dodging daddy and the talent managers doing literally all of the work to start that vanity business for her is not it.

Pretending that she has a full-time job that she jumped through hoops to get while neglecting to mention that her old private school just keeps handing her a variety of CV-padding busywork roles without any experience or qualifications purely because her parents sunk hundreds of thousands of pounds into their school is not it. (See also: Undeclared ad opportunities which she dishonestly dressed up as a job and only got because she's an influencer, like the Emily Dickinson museum fiasco.)

Bragging that she never failed at anything in life until she was an adult without mentioning that she was wearing 12 golden parachutes paid for by mummy and daddy so that she was never in a position to fail at anything is not it.)
