My daughters and I have always used “Friends” as a reset button — when life gets too much, we pop it on and watch a few episodes. Matthew Perry was a big reason why — he just had that comic timing that made most lines hit with a laugh. While I am sure we will carry on with this tradition, it will not be the same knowing he is gone.

And Chita, I read his book. I would advise NOT reading it if you want to remember him closer to being Chandler Bing. His writing was honest — brutal, at times — and I would not want to read it now, after his tragic death. Maybe wait a few years?

Second this. I read it last year when it came out - it is an incredible and astonishing piece of writing, but a very hard read. To feel the pain running through pretty much every year of his life was so sad. It was a miracle he made it to 54. So today’s news wasn’t a huge shock - but I have found it unbearably sad. Such a loss.

agreed - the saddest thing for me reading it was just how frequently he got in his own way (i don’t know how else to word it!) - he was desperate for marriage and family, but by his own admission ran away from romantic relationships when they became too serious. he wanted so desperately to be seen as the funniest person in the room that he could (again by his own admission) get mean and go too far. he had so many people who loved him but didn’t seem to truly believe that anyone did. he didn’t come across as very easy to like at times, but i also thought he was very honest about his own failings.

i hope his extremely anxious and sometimes tortured mind is at rest now :(

@sassyyankee
Thats what I was thinking. I will wait a while.
Think it will be too upsetting at the moment.

I would think they’re shocked, and that they may be giving themselves time to put out a statement that strikes exactly the right note; not always easy to do when you’re reeling.
Thing is though, the statements might not be in their own words. It might be a well rehearsed public relations statement, lacking in true sentiment.
I hope I'm wrong.
My reason for this assumption is because, judging by the reunion show they did a while back, the rest of the cast were somewhat estranged from Matthew because of his lifestyle choices.

I’m hoping it wasn’t so much estranged as having to love him from afar. Lisa Kudrow did the foreword for his memoir last year… I think the cast members may have been waiting for his family to make their own statement?

Statement from all 5 😭😭 I feel so sad, that they had to sit and come up with something like the world was waiting. I couldn't imagine having to do that after losing someone close to me. I can feel their pain in that statement if it makes sense :( like they don't owe anyone anything right now. I truly hope they take time and be there for each other

To make it worse, according to TMZ, it looks like he hadn't actually been under that long before the assistant came back from his errands. His body wasn't waterlogged the way it would have been if he had been under for a while.

Doesn't this make it seem unlikely it was a cardiac arrest/heart attack? I reckon his cause of death will be very similar to Aaron Carter's.

According to reports, the call put through was for cardiac arrest although I don't know how as all reports say he was already under the water by the time the assistant came back. The only stuff they found was prescribed drugs for depression, anxiety and COPD. Admittedly, there are some antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs that can give you a high but I would assume knowing his history, it would be low doses he was on. It could be he had fallen off and no one knew but it could also be they needed to know what was in his system to rule stuff out before deciding on a cause. I guess time will tell either way.
