Old Hollywood gossip & stories

Love Thelma, she always brightens up an old film with her cutting one liners. This is my favourite from All About Eve, I often use it when commenting on one of Jack Monroe's tall tales:

She holds the record for the most Oscar nominations in the supporting category, six times with no win.

Love this thread! Agree about the wonderful Gene Tierney in Laura and Leave Her To Heaven, both fantastic films. I've been binging on old classics too. All About Eve and Mildred Pierce are two of my faves.
I saw Footsteps in the Fog recently, thought it was great, and made extra interesting because its stars Jean Simmons and Stewart Granger were married at the time (massive age difference, nice creepy frisson between them in the film).

Where have you been watching them? Or did you get them on DVDs?

Apologies in advance as I know it’s a tad early but apart from White Christmas, It’s A Wonderful Life and Holiday Inn does anyone have any recommendations for old Christmas films? I’m usually not a fan of them, especially the ones you get on Channel 5 as they are too twee but I think when it’s old Hollywood the tweeness adds to it.

'Meet me in St Louis' is not Christmassy all the way through but has a wonderful festive feel, and ends up on Christmas Eve with 'Have yourselves a merry little Christmas' so is considered a seasonal film.
Of course the original 'Miracle on 34th Street'.
'The Shop around the Corner' with Mr Christmas himself James Stewart is festive.
And I had to look this up as I haven't seen it but know it is Christmassy and it looks so good. 'The Bishop's Wife' with Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and the recently spoken about here David Niven. Review below contains a clip.

Why did they get rid of TCM?
I wish there was a streaming channel that I could get in the UK that showed all the old Hollywood ones (and not just random crappy ones haha)

Down to money, I think. It's WB/Discovery that ran it and they seemingly lost over $2 billion. So, to try and claw some money back, quite a few of the higher-ups were sacked, they are selling off stuff and some channels were shut down here and in the US, TCM being one of them. They have said the Quest Channel will show some older films but it won't be 24/7 like it was.

The only other options on Sky/Virgin/Freeview apart from Talking Pictures are Sky Cinema or the Great! Movies Classic channels but they are bad for repeating movies.

A great film and not what I expected when I starred watching it!
(When I was child i would confuse Jean Simmons with Audrey Hepburn, and be disappointed it wasn't Audrey😄).

If you get the opportunity watch Gaslight, similarly sinister!

Lists their upcoming films, enough time to set record!

It's mentioned below but The Bishops Wife is lovely and The Holly and the Ivy is a good British one, I think Celia Johnson is in it.
