Old Hollywood gossip & stories

my god 😮 i went to his wikipedia and the write up about it actually made me quite sad:

The actor Omid Djalili, who was also in Malta at the time of Reed's death filming Gladiator, said during an interview in 2016: "He hadn't had a drink for months before filming started...Everyone said he went the way he wanted, but that's not true. It was very tragic. He was in an Irish bar and was pressured into a drinking competition. He should have just left, but he didn't."[65] Having made a number of promises to Ridley Scott prior to filming, including that he would not drink during production, Reed worked around this by only drinking on weekends. Co-star David Hemmings was a long time friend of Reed's (they appeared together in the 1964 film The System), and in 2020 Scott stated, "David Hemmings (Cassius) promised to look after him and said to me [upon his death], I'm really sorry, old boy".[66]

it’s incredible he managed to last as long as he did with his drinking though.
I have a book that was recommended in a thread on here called Hellraisers:The Life and inebriated Times of Burton,Harris,O’toole and Reed good grief the booze.😳

Thank you for the links!
I know people disbelieve Christina and to be fair I haven’t properly looked into their relationships a great deal. But I do sympathise with her - to the outside world her Mother was wonderful but at home she was a terror. It was a similar story with my father. When he died I had so many people tell me he was wonderful, he was humorous, a good friend, etc and I haven’t been able to reconcile their version of my father with my experiences. The man who was a great friend was also the same man who terrified his children? It makes no sense!
As for her younger siblings saying that Christina lied, I’m wondering if it was to do with their age difference (she says they weren’t even born when she was adopted) and their temperament.

Unfortunately, my dad was the same. He physically and mentally abused my mother and me but was good at putting on the charm and being all-loving when people were around. Because I have dealt with mental illness since I was a child, he used that to cover things by claiming I hurt myself to get attention. He was also good at hitting where the bruises wouldn't show. My mum finally got the courage to turf him out and when his friends found out why, they were shocked that they had never seen that side of him but believed my mother as they knew she would never lie over something like that. He eventually remarried and doesn't as much as raise his voice at my half-sister.

That's why I'm not surprised that Joan treated them so differently...they were the 'perfect' children, unlike Christina and Christopher who she seemed embarrassed of. That's why I do tend to believe Christina's story as she does have people to back her up and say they witnessed things, unlike B.D. Hyman who wrote the same kind of book about her Bette Davis. No one came out in support of her and she was often caught in contradictions when interviewed as she never seemed to tell the same story more than once.

Have you checked these sites?

Always get some good and also unknown oldies on on this channel.

(And check the schedule for film4, they have occasional 11.00am classics (normally westerns/wartime!) or otherwise in mid afternoon

Well you could say the secretary probably knew her better than anyone else. Christopher as far am I aware said Christine was lying.
I don’t think that’s factually correct. By all accounts Christopher was as equally miserable growing up, and was also cut out of family life and her will.

It’s the twins who vocally disagreed with Christina. They seemed to have a different upbringing to Christina and Christopher as Joan was in a “stable” relationship with the Pepsi chief, that brought her status, and was less prone to what Christina called “night raids” from the stress of keeping the show on the road. Plus they were much quieter children in comparison to the more precocious Christina and possibly ADHD Christopher, who kept running away.

A lot of people refuse to see parental abuse for what it really is as they either side with the bully as they’re the one with power/money, or they are putting themselves in the abusers’ shoes.

Can I just say that I am sorry to anyone who thinks I was condoning abuse. That was not my intention and I do agree that for actors, people can be fooled by appearances.

I do love Joan Crawford as an actress but she obviously had her troubles and she was probably an alcoholic. I just think Christine also had an agenda and there are conflicting accounts.

I mean back in the day abuse was viewed as discipline

What a fab thread! Such shite weather I've had the telly on more than usual and watched Gentleman Prefer Blondes last week embarrassingly for the first time. LOVED IT. Was reading how Jane and Marilyn got on well irl, 'According to Russell's 1985 autobiography, she called Monroe "Blondie" and was often the only person on the set who could coax Monroe out of her trailer to begin the day's filming.'

Jane Russell was lovely I thought.

i LOVE gentleman prefer blondes! marilyn was such a lovely on-screen presence and the outfits in that movie are 👌🏻👌🏻

edit: i used to watch it with my gran (all of my old
hollywood faves are from her) and i had such a crush on the actor who plays the private investigator whose name i have now forgotten 🤣

Marilyn was a fantastic actress and not just in comedy. She was brilliant in don't bother to knock which was a thriller.

Poor poor woman. I doubt she had many female friends so I'm glad Jane was kind to her. Dame Sybill Thorndike who worked with her on the Prince and the showgirl also.was very kind to her.

Totally agree, she acts so well in it, and yesss to the wardrobe, I bag the orange dress!

ooo great choice - i’ll take jane russell’s black dress and veil combo! i remember thinking their wedding dresses were gorgeous too.

she really was. i think the mystique almost overpowers her on screen now (in that you’re always aware that you’re watching the marilyn monroe) but she really was wonderfully charismatic and charming on screen, on comedy and drama. i love her in bus stop, which sort of combines the two.

she does always seem a little fragile to me in all her parts but again i don’t know it that’s my brain supplementing that because of everything we know about her.

Jane Russell was absolutely stunning.

I don't know if it's the black and white photography, lighting or make up but the women of that era were just so striking.

agreed. i think it’s a combination of makeup and lighting styles tbh as they all have the same great cheekbones and high arched eyebrows.

gene tierney has to be the most beautiful for me though. i have never seen a woman more striking than she is in leave her to heaven. yet another actress who suffered tremendous personal tragedy though :(

I think it’s also because even though they had plastic surgery in that area they still kept their unique features and they didn’t have those silly turkey teeth. Any nips and tucks were more refined and less obvious.

Leave Her to Heaven is one of my favourite films. Young Vincent Price 🩷
I saw these photos of her on a YouTube video and I’m not 100% sure if it’s her because they wouldn’t look out of place in a beauty ad from the 90s. Never seen them before.
