For years, we got a "Mumsnet Christmas".

My mother would big it up every year well in advance and announce it was going to be the best Christmas ever.

However, being a cack-handed shirker with poor attention to detail and flummoxed by any dish requiring more than three ingredients, it would descend into a black farce of mishaps, swearing and declarations that she would never do this again.

Nobody asked her to do it, everybody told her not to bother but nope, "Bestest Christmas Ever Or Die Trying" it was going to be.

Thankfully, she's far too old to even pretend these days but I miss the fun of it so have to rely on the annual "I've ruined Christmas. DH is divorcing me and my MIL has been proved right" threads on MN instead.

Some people, when kids ask or say that they know, say that the truth is that Santa does exist, but he's not really a man in a suit, he's the spirit of Christmas, love, giving, etc etc...and we show that as Santa to help small children understand but now you're old enough to know the truth, you can help keep the magic alive for younger children.
That’s how it is in our extended family. A family tradition, if you will. Once children realize there is no Santa they are then told “keep it a secret so the younger children don’t find out yet” and also “we are all Santa. Be nice to people and find ways to bring joy and happiness. That’s the magic of Christmas”. As they get older we tell them that we use the Santa story to introduce them to the concept of kindness and love to others.

I hate to admit this but last year was the first time that I really became aware of advent calendars. I got completely sucked in, went overboard on the FOMO and ended up buying six! Determined to buy only one this year I somehow find myself with four. I need to stop watching the unboxings on YouTube. I now have enough make-up and skincare to open my own shop. 😱
Ahh I wish but budgetary constraints so I bought one.

Thoroughly approve of a splurge however, they are fun!

Ok you are all going to really hate me but I no longer buy xmas presents for my kids. To be fair they are 29, 27 and 22, but we talked about it together and decided as we all had too much tit anyway, we would only buy for my mum and for the grandkids. My mum was horrified because she loves buying tit for us like Dove/Lynx giftsets, clothes that don't fit, slippers that are never worn etc etc so we all still buy for her (this year we are getting her a robot lawnmower 😂 )

We still buy for birthdays (I usually give them cash) and if I see something I know they like or need throughout the year, I buy it for my kids then rather than gift at christmas.

I still decorate and host at christmas, but I just don't want to buy for the sake of it anymore.

Yes, residents of impoverished slums have been known to thank their lucky stars they don't have to pay council tax in the home counties and receive services in return. Don't need your bins collected if you already live at the rubbish dump eh, they've unlocked the true secret to life.

Tiny violin for the tone deaf turbo-hole who can’t afford her special olive oil anymore 😢 🎻

I'm such a grump though that the OP of the frugality fatigue thread is annoying me too 🤣 verbose word salad trying to be funny posts so everyone's going OP you write very well you could be a copywriter.

Budgeting? Obviously not on a six-figure salary then are they? It's a wonder anyone is replying to the povvo let alone encouraging them.

A weird thread by an OP who doesn't understaaaaand Orthodox Judaism and so of course went to ask Mumsnet because where else would you go first to ask questions about Judaism. They've been directed to an AMA by an Orthodox Jewish woman who has already answered several of their questions but seem to be ignoring it.

They're being careful with their chosen words but I'm getting the same vibe as the thread the other day by the OP whose best friend was a black Zimbabwean Muslim who'd just attacked a child and didn't think anyone but OP could have reported it. It's just a veiled antisemite, isn't it?

If they are moving here because of the cost of living in the UK, they are in for a shock. On my trips to the UK I have deduced that only three things are cheaper here than the UK: driving (gas, parking), hotels, and fast food. Everything else is more expensive here.
I've seen a few reaction videos on YouTube where people from the US are gobsmacked by the quality and cheapness of groceries in Europe.

How does anyone just up and move? Having just been through the process of getting DC an F1 student visa which cost me at least £1k, plus all the paperwork, surely you can’t just “move to the US”?

I agree. We’ve visited a few times now and the prices of most things are pretty much the same $/£. So if the exchange rate is good you can benefit a bit- a pair of trainers will be £95 in the uk and $95 in the US, so it works out cheaper for us. Especially as often the tax is added on top in the US. Eating out and even stuff like Starbucks is very expensive.
