Midlifechic

Yes, “the Americans”…. rather than “my new American friends” or some such nonsense… curt and dismissive. Very telling…

I can only assume Nikki reads here and has adjusted her post accordingly!

Thank goodness Malcolms everyday moments are so much better with Nikki in them

Do you think she ever thinks about her role in the ongoing wave of overconsumption and planetary destruction of pushing forever NEW NEW NEW? I know she occasionally pulls out an old coat or something, but she’s never addressed this or looked further than the greenwashing offered by her favourite middle aged frump vendors, has she?

I am not really a blogger follower but have been following Midlifechic since the beginning. I always has a bit of a love/hate relationship with her blog but have felt that over the years she has become very pretentious and is more into selling product than she admits. I have met her in person, and her husband, and again it felt more like a marketing issue than anything else. Interestingly her husband asked me how I deal with girlfriends of sons. From that I assume that girlfriends aren’t really welcome and are problematic in the ‘happy’ family.
She is now writing a book and milking the followers for their experiences, I would be interested to know how much she is being paid for the book considering she is using other womens’ experiences, some of whom will be quite vulnerable. The book needs to have midlife sex as part of its content.

Thoughts?

I just find her completely non-relatable and a bit of a try-hard pain in the arse.
The golden age of blogger publishing is long gone, so it will be interesting to see how this book plays out. Has she actually got a deal or is she doing this on spec?

I agree, she’ll be completely dependent on other people’s freely provided content as her middle class world/home/family view seems so narrow (boys/bonkers husband/Boden/hairdo), and that’s her business life isn’t it, turning people’s opinions into marketing reports? Plus details of her sex life — no thank you. Does not strike me as a book I’d even dream of picking up. I can picture the front cover now, touching the hair, snug grin, some king of bright red outfit….

I think she has been approached. You are right her business life is that, at least that’s my assumption. Strangely, I know someone else (friend of a friend…) who was asked to write a similar kind of book. The publicity hooha meant she was everywhere like a rash - I was told she earned £14,000 for it.

I find Midlife’s approach very patronising and reading her blog last night annoyed me so much I had to see if there are any others who agree with me.

My god her Instagram stories of her mum-dancing are just too cringeworthy for words. Those hideous tight vests she insists on wearing don’t suit her at all and she looks so awkward and unnatural.

I saw this and thought of them….

About 5 / 6 years ago I bought some good things from her recommendations. They were fairy unbiased.
Now I find her to be completely insincere and, yes, unrelatable. She only promotes clothes etc. if they're from John Lewis...maybe Boden (have they dropped her?) I know that she's paid to do this...but don't tell me that she walks around all day in JL or Boden clothes and not the occasional pair of M&S joggers!
And as for her survey of readers for her upcoming 'book'! I have no words...literally!

No way would she ever wear White Stuff clothes. She even looks uncomfortable modeling them!

I imagine that she went into the shop...shuddered..and grabbed the first 4 'pieces' that she saw.

TBF, I popped into White Stuff yesterday, and some of the clothes were quite nice. Even bought a jumper...but not the one that Nikki was wearing.

(I hate the way that influencers call clothes "pieces" and say that the next shipment of such pieces have 'dropped' into store!)

I think it makes them feel important rather than people playing dress-up* for a living.

*This is in no way to denigrate the fashion industry and its importance to the economy. But the overconsumption does not sit well with me.
