Sir Humphrey would be appalled but some might welcome it. My sister, who worked in Whitehall, opted for early retirement in the last clear-out they had. Treated herself to a new car with the golden handshake and has a pension larger than many people's salary.

Too right. I worked there for years. It'll probably cost them more to clear out the jobs than it will save. They have extremely genorous redundacy terms particularly if taken voluntarily and they all get asked back to work as consultants on contract anyway. Money for old rope.

It's just someone else to beat a stick with. I think it's just a sly was of threatening staff to return to working in an office.
If they're so overloaded with staff move them Passports, Tax and DoWP who we are constantly told have a massive work load (which they do). It's better for them to reassign/move people to other departments which are struggling. Something that would be much easier to do with people working from home I might add.

The good pension plan was, for many years, compensation for generally being low paid. Yes, it's a great pension but you do contribute a hefty amount to it and it is a major reason for people choosing civil service over better paid jobs in private industry. I never understood people in private industry whining about Civil service pensions. You should have joined the civil service if that was what you wanted. Being in the civil service you are never going to set the world on fire financially but you will have a steady, fairly secure income with a good pay out that the end.

Jonathan Slater summed it up very well. Interesting what he says about the MoD in that they removed civil servants and then they just ended up with Army,RAF and Navy personnel doing the jobs the civil servants had done!

Is she married ?!!!!

On the subject of Sir Humphrey, BBC 4 repeated an episode of 'Yes, Prime Minister' the other evening. He had to deal with a woman from 'the left' who wanted more representation on the Local Council for the People. It was very funny, and obvioulsy couldn't have been shown just prior to the recent elections !

Divorced but has a long time partner! Sorry.

BBC4 have been running repeats of classic sitcoms on Tuesday nights for some time. We've had 'Yes, Minister' and this is the second series of 'Yes, PM'. Every week I'm struck by how relevant it still is.

I came across it by accident. I shall try to remember to watch it next week. There was another long term series on BBC on Tuesday nights, but now it is no more

Nick Abbot thinks we lost Eurovision because of Bowwis
I think we did well because of Boris. It was a good entry but Boris has made it OK for Europe to like the UK again!

I listened to Nick last night for the first time in ages and managed about ten minutes. I don't know if he actually believes the warped, spiteful stuff he spouts but I think he has a mental problem. He's even worse than Jobby!

Emotionally stable people who haven't got at least one personality disorder won't be successful in broadcast media, you can quote me on that.

I'm actually really tempted to re-listen to Nick Abbott to see just how he squares this circle. He's off his bleeping rocker, it's weird how he gets more anti UK with each week and evermore lives in an alternative reality o_O

Iain Dale covering weekend breakfast next weekend.

I am surprised there hasn't been cheers of "well-done" to Andrew Castle for 'adopting' a Ukrainian family. You could imagine the comments if he said something like "under no circumstances would I 'adopt' ..."

He threw all his toys out of his guilded pram the other week when people kept texting in that he only took them in because they were white and not Afghan etc. LOL. It was quite amusing.

I don't think they're complete strangers - there's some kind of connection with friends. But even so, it's a good thing to do and a lot more than most of the celeb virtue signalers who keep telling us to welcome refugees.

Had a brief listen last night; didn't stay long. He was slagging off the NHS and telling us how much better health care is in Europe. I do wish he'd go and live there!

I wonder if Brian will mention Eurovision today? I guess the rise in the popularity of the UK ( 12 points from Ukraine) is all too painful for a man who promoted the view that Boris is a Russian plant. How much more wrong could Carole Cadwalladr be?
