Does anyone recall the days when LBC was not so political? I used to love it the. Friday nights was Susan Spence & Jim Davis (?) A sex & relationships show. Much detail about anal sex.
There was a David Preever on at around 2 pm. Robbie Vincent on a Sunday night (yonks ago). Clive getting calls from Jean & an Irish guy who said Pughgeot for Peugeot. 😂 It was such fun back then.
Of course Steve Allen with his guests. Alan Dodgeon, John Warrington ❤ and Nathan Morley. I recall Alan & Steve trying some soup which heated up in a can and they were in hysterics laughing 😂 I got my son to record it for my phone ringtone.
It went off in the dentists once when I was in the chair. I seem to recall Alan Dodgeon had something to do with the birth of Twitter. I miss those days.

* think the Irish guy was Brendan.

I started my LBC listening with Robbie Vincent although it was not originally my choice as my mum used to have his show on when doing ironing or washing up. But I grew to like it and started to listen when it was my choice as well.

I remember listening back in the days of the likes of Philip Hodgson and Mike Dickin, who was a character to say the least. That must have been 35 years ago! It did seem an awful lot more fun back then. I used to listen in bed at night with a small ratio under my pillow, driving my mum mad as I wouldn’t go to sleep and kept laughing my head off.

I don’t remember anyone banging on endlessly about politics for 3 miserable hours.

The change to being a news based station has certainly worked for LBC and Global. Listening figures are massive and they certainly get all the big political names on their shows.

However, there is still room in the schedule for more varied topics, especially at the weekend. Does Darren Adam have to be so intense at 3am in the morning? If there is nothing major or breaking they could vary it a bit. Then again you still get people whining all the time that they're not covering Brexit every days or Mystery Hour needs to be binned.

I wasn't listening before the Brexit referendum, but do any of you think that LBC has become more popular due to Brexit and what has happened since? I doubt people knew much about James O'Brien before Brexit, but since then his voice has been one of the biggest among the anti-brexit supporters.

Yes I remember. Those were the days when LBC was more entertainment based.

When talking about radio in the 'old days' it used to be memories of the 'pirate' radio stations, eg Caroline , Big L. Now it looks like ILR has its own history and followers!

For me the days of pirate radio was when I deserted the likes Bob and Doug and Brian Hayes in the mid eighties for the soul pirates in London.

I remember in the early eighties when Mike Dickin first appeared on the LBC evening show they used to call night line.

In the mid nineties for a year or two, Phillip Hodson used to have a cracking sex and emotional problems show on Sunday nights from about 7 until 9pm. I remember because I was training as a counsellor back then and used to write up my assignments on Sunday nights listening to his show. For years before this, Hodson only ever used to crop up as a regular in the guest spot of other people's phone in shows.

I think the problem with the shows featuring experts is that they have a niche audience. Personally I used to switch off or change stations rather than listen to callers' problems with their health, love lives, car repairs, legal questions, etc. And once I tuned out, I rarely went back.

Ah Bob and Doug and Brian Hayes… great stuff. I absolutely adored LBC back then. Unfortunately those early happy impressions mean I can never really shake the damn thing off once and for all. Even if I have a break I have to come back to it again and again…

Dickin was the first (that I was aware of) of that type of belligerent, opinionated, hilarious blokey presenter who just made for great listening. My brother and I were convinced he was also drunk quite a lot of the time. God knows what he talked about but I don’t think politics ever really featured - people just called in with random musings. I remember reading that he got fired for punching an LBC producer which seemed at the time totally in character.

Philip Hodson’s sex and relationship show was amazing. I learned a lot from it in my teen years. I’m sure I remember it earlier than that, in the early/mid 80s, but as you say he was guesting on others’ shows back then.

I can see that the shift to politics has been good for LBC but I can’t really see that these presenters do much more than stoke peoples’ fires (and not in a nice Philip Hodson kind of way). Anyway I’m probably due another break from the misery fairly soon. I’ve been listening to Mike Graham on Talk in the morning who reminds me a bit of Dickin / Hayes, same kind of energy. At least he’s got an upbeat and optimistic perspective unlike his 10am LBC counterpart who always makes me feel like everything everywhere is absolutely dreadful.

Perhaps you are too young ;) but 'pirate' radio was broadcasting offshore between 1964-1967. The soul pirates were landbased and mainly consisted of guys broadcasting from their bedrooms their favourite music, until the Post Office found them, and closed them down!

Just looking at the audience figures for LBC, and I see that over the whole day, only 3 presenters have increased their audience. One clue, J O'B is not one of them, he has just lost less listeners than other presenters! Anybody fancy having a guess, and then putting them in order of who lost the most down to who lost the least !!!

You could send me your answers on a back of a £50 note to .....!!!

😆 brilliant!

How is the lovely Jolyon these days? Does James have him on? I lost track after that hilarious but not hilarious for the fox incident.
James did a big interview with him not so long ago in what I assumed was an attempt by Jolyon to move on after the fox incident. Sadly the fox was unable to move on for obvious reasons....

Warning as James would get the Private Eye Order of the Brown Nose or OBN for the tweet below.

What did you learn? Anything about 'birds and bees' ? :m

Steve remembers seeing the Queen return to Britain from Africa, wearing black as she disembarked from the plane. That was in 1951. Steve was born in 1954.

He obviously saw it on a newsreel.

Practically, it was obviously unexpected that the King was to die at that time. It is lucky she had a black outfit to return to Britain with - or did someone have to dash off to the local M&S ?! I presume she didn't take black clothes with her everytime she went away 'just in case'?

I bet they do. I would think the Royals always travel with a black outfit 'just in case'.

I'm confused by the question tbh.

1) Nick Ferrari lost the most.

2) Shelagh Fogerty increased

3) Iain Dale increased.
