We had coin meters, I remember scrabbling around for shillings for the meter, this was after decimalisation because the landlords were too tight to replace the meter.
It moved on to 10pence pieces and then fifty pees.
By the time I was living on my own I'd moved on to pound coin meters.
When I was a child, someone dodgy taught my parent how to 'fiddle the meter'.
The landlord caught on and called the police . We were very poor and I saw a lot of desperate low level criminal activity growing up. even took part in some myself as I moved on into bedsit land as a young teen, it seemed par for the course among my peers and the adults around me.
It has been strange growing up and realising that a LOT of people have absolutely no comprehension of what it's like to be absolutely abjectly deprived and neglected.
I'm a single parent now ( from a long line of single parents) and we are not well off at all and don't have a lot of the things that my kids see other families enjoying but compared to my childhood, my children live like kings. And compared to many families around us, we look like millionaires. I can't even afford to drive and there are some times when I worry about bills and food but I don't have to use coin or key meters anymore and I am so bloody thankful that my kids are cushioned and privileged in many ways.
