Great British Bake Off #3 2022

I really couldn’t take to Rebs. Maybe harsh, but she struck me as someone who is not used to ever being criticised or told that she can’t have what she wants. James went straight over to her to commiserate when they were both eliminated, but Rebs was quite self absorbed in her reaction to getting sent home
I didn’t enjoy Mexican week, and the Taco challenge seemed more like a cookery test than a baking one.

I’ve given up after last night.
It’s really lost its appeal to me, Matt Lucas was a bad signing it’s just so painful him trying to be funny and it’s ruined the show.
I think I’m going to series link it and forward their “funny” parts from now on.

Dawn reminds me of a Wallace and gromit character.
I was thinking Babs from chicken run!

I agree rebs was hard to warm to. I didn't like how she always demanded help in the final stages as if she was entitled to it- before it always seemed like something people offered if they were free! I've also never seen someone take being axed so hard, she was full on sobbing and looked devastated, whereas James was so affable and nice about it. Didn't like her at all!

It really did feel like a Masterchef technical last night rather than a baking one. Most odd!

The other 2 challenges were good though, lots of options for what to make and I'm not familiar with Mexican baking so enjoyed it from that perspective.

Can't be upset about who went, was definitely overdue for Rebs and James wasn't great last night. Did think Carol would get the boot before him though.

So I googled tres leche cake, and it seems like it only usually has one tier, because it's so moist/not structurally sound. So why were they asked to make loads of tiers? It feels like the show is deliberately trying to make the challenges impossible now. It's like when they made garibaldis, why did they make them coat it in chocolate? They don't normally have chocolate, and then they get judged saying the chocolate wasn't good?! 🤨

Yeh agree, it’s like they’ve run out of stuff and also they know the contestants aren’t the best technical bakers like they used to be so making simple things more obscure

Quite.
The bakery part of that challenge seemed the least important bit.
And was it even a Taco? I thought Tacos were crispy.
They seem to have strayed from the fundamental baking element quite a lot recently.
They seem reluctant to return to classics time and again, but I think viewers would like classics. I wouldn't mind if they went back to 12 perfect scones for eg, with a lovely bread showstopper without numerous fancy fillings.
That is after all how Bake off became so popular in the first place.

Exactly- there's enough lovely classic recipes that they could keep going without it getting stale! Plus there must have been more Mexican bakes they could have picked before resorting to steak tacos! I would have liked to see how everyone fared with tres leche cakes that weren't tiered- it's different enough to be interesting on its own without the extra unnecessary and difficult to achieve tiers! I would have loved to see most of them nail a delicious and well decorated cake rather than most of them struggling with an unrealistic extra task that didn't add anything!
