Great British Bake Off #3 2022

Bake Off is just not really grabbing my attention this series. I never really sack tv shows off altogether so I’ll keep watching but I’ve seen some of the older episodes on Food Network recently and it makes you realise how different it is now, with contestants who are genuine amateurs. Like this year, I feel like the standard overall is really high. It’s kind of like the Love Island effect and started changing after Nadiya won.. people are going on the show because they want a tv or book deal, rather than they just like making cakes for their grandkids or whatever. 🤣

I agree! The show stoppers have been quite unappealing- this week's awful bread and fish cake looked grim, and last week's mask might have looked okay but I didn't want to eat any of them, and the standing up part seemed more like engineering than actual good baking skill. I'd prefer to see really amazing bakes that look appetizing and give me ideas about new flavours to try! Silly aspects like "must be free standing" just isn't really appealing to the viewer and means good bakers get stumped by things you would never have to do if you were just baking normally!

Bake off is really failing to grab me this year, I never usually get so distracted by literally anything else in the room as I do with this show lately

But it's not about their looks. It's about baking ability and talent not what they look like. That's all I'm saying.🍰🧁🙂
I have a feeling she is likely chosen for her looks. This show seems to put ticking all the boxes over real skill or talent. All ethnicities, all sexual persuasions, all ages, and not forgetting the one with the silly hair. There is always a pretty one. Wokeness is filtering through to most of this type of show, makes a mockery of the whole thing. In my opinion. Doesn’t stop me watching or enjoying it.

Paul's a bleep
And another one who cannot take his hands out of his pockets. 😤 I think he is getting ruder too. I was annoyed when he said that the woman with the pink hair’s sandwich cake was very Fanny Craddock and very sixties. Piss off you conceited twit.

I don't know what it is this year but I just can't get into it! The hosts are really annoying me 🙄
Wish they would stop trying to be funny, it is just cringeworthy and the poor contestants have to pretend to laugh.

Sorry, I'm always going to be late on my takes as I'm in the US.

That was not bread week. The technical was not bread at all, and the showshopper was more about fillings than anything. I don't know why they decided to make such weird choices for bread week, but none of it was really appealing to watch or think about eating.

I also feel like none of the contestants have really shone in terms of personality. Either they're all still having nervous jitters about being on TV for the first time, or this is the most reserved bunch we've had.

I think they are pretty talented this year though

Haven’t watched GBBO since it’s move to C5, am enjoying it in the sense that I know the format but the ad breaks are never ending. Watched this week a day later and fast forwarded the ads and chit chat. Paul Hollywood is well past his sell by date. I like Prue, Matt and Noel but together they are awkward. Totally agree about the contestants in terms of box ticking, it’s all very placed. Without the TV ad income I’m not sure it would survive.

Anyone seen the article about prue drowning kittens when she was a kid? Absolutely vile. I wont be watching any more of bake off now. No wonder her sons such an evil man! Generation trauma.
I read it. It was hard to read but tbf I think it was quite common in those days as it was before pets were sterilised and stray cats were quite a problem. She also said she didn't want to do it but was made to by her mother and that she found it very traumatic. I don't think it's fair to hold it against her really

My Mother did the same to two litters of kittens when I was a child back in the 1970's. I saw the whole thing, it is something that you never forget.

It was and she was 11 at the time. I'd question her mother more than Prue for making her do it! It was 1951 and it was common practise back in the day. My Dad was only telling me recently he found a bag of puppies (alive) once when he was fishing at a canal.

I think it was probably quite common back in those days. I remember my grandad saying once about the mixed breeds that now cost a fortune that they would of gotten drowned when he was young.
I don’t really understand her logic putting it in the book mind surely she’d be aware this will cause some backlash.

I think it's more about the trauma that it stayed with her. Unfortunately most things are so binary these days and people just thing 'she killed kittens' The headlines are to blame. In context you see it was an 11 year old child coerced by her mother and that it has stayed with her 71 years later.

Look at the comments under this.

Some of those comments are vile they really need to adjust their headlines almost everyone seems to be painting her to be this evil kitten killer.

I feel a bit queasy about this to be honest😭 As an 11 year old I am sure the parent made the decision and not the child… Thank goodness there have been changes in Animal welfare and rescues do amazing work, we have 2 stunning rescue cats and 1 rescue doggo… The cats got extra cuddles after I read that…. How things might have been for them… I know I shouldn’t feel differently towards Prue ( I usually think she is amazing) but the article is a stomach churner for sure 😞

Have to laugh at the "it was different back then" excuse. At 11 i would have been more likely to drown my mother if she asked me to harm an animal. But i suppose it really explains how prues kid is so vile when its just been generations of cruelty and white privilege

Really? I wouldn't. I still very much did as I was told when I was 11.

I'm not sure Bake Off and this thread is for you and your vitriol. Not really what this thread is about.
