Here's an example of the exact sort of gender stereotyping he continues to perpetuate, despite claiming to have moved on from it when he weighed in on the toxic masculinity discussions that were all over social media late last year.
His hollow words about men's mental health, crying in the car park, talking about gendered assumptions, desperately trying to show a "woke" side, but meanwhile being a part of the problem again and again with posts like this one.
- The heavy suitcase in your hallway isn't a #WOMENSPACKING thing, it is a Clemmie thing.
- The 10 kilo cosmetic bag in Clemmie's case isn't a #WOMENSPACKING thing, it is a Clemmie thing.
Some women pack in a similar way to Clemmie. Some pack even more. Some travel with light hand baggage only. Some pack no cosmetics at all. Most will probably fall somewhere between the extremes. Breaking news! Women are all different.
There were so many ways he could have presented this series of stories, but he chose an angle that attributed all women with the same stereotypical behaviour and lumped them together in a big pink hashtag, while presenting himself as a superior individual with his "FYI":
"...all I'm going to wear it swimming shorts and a "T-Thsirt" he proclaims, while using a snarky tone and putting down Clemmie's choices.
I'll call out the hypocrisy too - this is the very same man who claimed (either directly or by allowing Clemmie to ghost write for him) that he could watch his wife getting ready for hours and referred to her as "a woman of standards" in the context of her clothes and makeup routine.
Simon (if you're reading) - eschewing toxic masculinity isn't posting once a year to blub about your feelings and mention that stereotyping isn't OK. Among other things, it's having the self-awareness to know that gender stereotyping is something you do very frequently; and if you really want to be better you need to check and query every post you make.
Because this says a whole lot more about you then it says about women.
