Ex Slimming World Disordered Eating Recovery #2 Underestimating Our Desire To Eat Pasta

It was on the news yesterday that the government is pushing back the ban on buy one get one free 'junk food', it's such a farce anyway they think that will make any difference whatsover to the obesity problem in the UK when we live in a world where you can get, depending on where you live obviously practically any fast food you want delivered to your door without even having to phone anyone.

It's mad what they think will resolve certain issues.

Off topic but saw on Insta this morning a post with some of the horrendous items Iceland stock, I was in town and I had to go and see with my own eyes that they do ACTUALLY sell a lasagne filled Yorkshire Pudding :ROFLMAO: it did make some hideous SW concoctions come to mind like the spaghetti pie thing on their website.

This! 😂 buy one get one free (although those kinds of offers seem rare these days anyway)
Is definitely not going to make the slightest bit of difference.

I can say just speaking for myself, if home delivery wasnt a thing, id probably weigh less 😂 or even if i didnt weigh less, id certainly cook more. And we only have one once every 2/3 weeks 😂

The latest thing is removing high fat and sugary foods from checkout areas. You aren’t allowed to put things like chocolate bars or crisps near the checkout but lots of retailers put ‘healthy’ stuff like cereal bars which aren’t much better.

Thing is, if you go to Europe they have plenty of cheap sweets and crisps in the supermarkets. They have junk food by the checkouts. Kids TV is awash with ads for sweets and junk, and while they do have obese people it’s nowhere near as bad as the UK. I think it’s because people have much better work/life balance in general, cook from scratch more and have better access to fresh food. But it’s easier for the government to do stupid publicity stunts like banning toys in cereal rather than actually tackling societal issues.

This is so sad looking back now, i used to dodge every single social event. I will never forgive slimming world for this mess.

Same here, one summer we had a whole school celebration, we were celebrating 125 years and the head teacher arranged for an ice cream van to visit with ice creams for everyone, generous and a fun thing to do for the children. I didnt touch one and for what?!! It didn't make me lose more weight. So many things I opted out of over the years for literally nothing.

Someone I volunteered with would say she could feed the family with a large takeaway for cheaper than buying ingredients from a supermarket and cooking it from scratch. Then you have to consider gas/electric. Then the time and effort. It’s a lazy option but I understand why people do it.

When the kids were growing up. Iceland bags of chips and nuggets would be the go to. It was cheap and my son at the time was a notoriously fussy eater and he loved the stuff from there. So I’d fill a chest freezer in the garage full of Iceland foods for them.

Cheap yes but zero nutritional value in bulk bought beige food, or the kind of takeaway I can imagine you get a lot of for not very much money, but still find it hard to believe it works out cheaper than cooking when you can make say, a lasagne to feed 6 people for less than £1 a portion.

My parents were absolutely skint at one point when we were growing up but every meal was cooked from scratch and every meal had veg. I can't remember ever getting a takeaway even when times were better. My mum shopped at Aldi/Lidl and at the market. She wouldn't make different meals it was either what she'd made for everyone or starve. A treat was supermarket pizza and oven chips on a weekend, or the odd trip to McDonalds for a happy meal. I didn't graduate from Happy Meals to the normal meals until I was about 15 :ROFLMAO: I used to love it if I went round to a friend's house for tea and it was chicken dippers or something because I never had anything like that at home.

I appreciate now it is harder to find the time to shop around but one thing from my venture into Iceland yesterday was most of the stuff was SO expensive! And also diffcult to differentiate between a lot of the products with 80% of them being the same colour!

Iceland stuff is absolute shite.

0 taste
0 nutritional value
And the meats are all from far off places like Thailand, Poland or Brazil.

You are right @uokhun92 it is cheaper to cook from scratch and anyone who thinks takeaways or buying in bulk are a cheaper way of eating has a very poor understanding of nutrition and budgeting

I'm an ex SW online member. I joined thinking the monetary investment would make me do it (LOL).

This is back when the website still told you you could eat "heaps" of rice and pasta. I've noticed they're more restrained in their wording these days.

The syns thing was just annoying and I prefer to use nutricheck so I can understand my eating habits and enjoy some nice treats. SW made me feel like if I had a piece of cake I was "off plan" and I had to work to get back on it. The irony that you don't have to weigh pasta, rice or potatoes but you have to measure 15g of ketchup.

I'd keep going with SW because I felt it allowed me to eat copious amounts of food but that made me more hungry. I've seen a lot more progress and long term maintenance of weight loss by just tracking what I eat, regardless of what it is I choose to eat.

This in news today just as some of us are on about how shite Iceland and cheap processed food is....not good.

I remember Iceland being so cheap. There is a food warehouse Iceland that I went to, to try a slimming world meal, it was awful. Never again.

When the kids hit 14/15 thankfully their taste buds changed. My son was an avid rower and cyclist and he become nutritionally aware and moved away from chicken nuggets and chips thankfully.

It’s the one thing I feel slimming world does right. It gives people the starting blocks to cook from scratch and encourages it.

Hi all, I’ve felt for a long time that SW has given me disordered eating so it’s interesting to find a thread where so many of you are saying the same thing.

I joined SW in 2016 and lost over four stone relatively easily. I followed the plan to the letter and at the time I thought it was fantastic. Roll on to now and I can’t enjoy any food without worrying about whether it’s ‘free’ or not, and if not, how many syns it contains.
I deny myself bread because my consultant said it would ruin all diet attempts. She also said that licking the lid of a child’s yoghurt pot could mean the difference between a loss and a gain from week to week…

I know so much more about nutrition now but I still seem to be stuck in this never ending cycle of worrying about everything that passes my lips. It’s exhausting. I don’t weigh myself any more as I find it too anxiety inducing (I shake as soon as I get the scales out). I worry constantly that I’ve put on weight. I don’t enjoy anything I eat. And I blame most of this on SW and the messages that are handed out at the meetings.

I’ve actually just this minute remembered my consultant telling me once to reduce how much walking I was doing as it would negatively impact the number on the scales!

Sorry for the long rambling message! 😂 It just feels quite cathartic to find others in the same situation, although it also makes me so sad 😞

Anyone else had the ‘suggested’ group post come up on their Facebook feed? Someone didn’t want to eat peanuts at the cinema so she took roasted chickpeas and is being slaughtered in the comments🤣 it’s obviously come up on a lot of peoples feeds because SW as a plan is being ripped to shreds. Glad to see people opening their eyes to it!

I haven’t seen it but taking roasted chickpeas to the cinema should be illegal 🤣

Roasted chickpeas are likely to have as many calories or more than a standard cinema snack! They’re great and high in protein, but anything like that in excess will have the same affect on weight gain as having a normal snack (and obviously the associated issues with restricting yourself so much!)

Not seen it..can you post a screenshot please

I think if someone was eating roasted chickpeas next to me in the cinema the noise would make me want to punch them in the face😤
