He seems like a pretty smart guy. I think he knows that wasting some of his money for a year sure beats wasting all of it for a lifetime. I think he chuckles a little in the rare instances she enters his mind.

I mean, before he discovered how deranged she was, it wasn't exactly too bad of a time for Joe. He had a sort of an arm candy to take to friends' weddings and work events, someone to do cucking for him, and while she wasn't willing to do outdoorsy stuff with him all the time, I don't think she stopped him from his hobbies as spare time without Joe around was a perfect opportunity for her to shop, shop, shop.
Plus you'd think that as a 30 year old guy he had some degree of assertiveness when it comes to spending money he doesn't want to spend. If he was agreeing to pay rent, bills, buy furniture but didn't want to do it, then I don't know what to say other than he needs to work on his confidence 😉

If Elle didn’t remove the Joe breakup video, it had the potential to go viral.
It really is peak Elle. Leaving the office to go to mulitple shopping events. Completely missing how done with her her BF is all week. Chewing through cash.

And then at the end, wham! One frame we're telling everyone how sparkly a new dress is, the next we're sitting alone trying to figure out what the hell just happened.

If only she took the time to look inwards, she could be in a good relationship now.

Yeah, and like you said on the last page, she would have needed years of work doing that to get healthy after just the damage from Joe leaving. All the relationship disasters that followed made it so much worse.

It's not like she didn't have the time either. A couple months from now is the 3 year anniversary of Joe leaving right? Instead of using those three years looking at what was wrong in her life she just spent them making everything worse for herself . . .

I think Eleanor Lecocq spent so much of her life being the unpopular, ugly girl that the popular, pretty girls made fun of that she went a bit crazy after her looks and presumably treatment by others improved considerably post her plastic surgery, fillers, and designer purchases. She really did think that her new “status” would allow her to coast in life, especially since she went for ugly to average looking men with some money. What she didn’t realize is that even for guys like Chris the English troll and Joe the nerdy cute lawyer, that wasn’t enough. They either wanted better looking and or a better person, and there’s no shortage of hotter, more interesting, or kinder women. Very few women can coast on looks alone and definitely not Ginette’s twin sister Elle, no matter how much she spends on operations and maintenance, especially considering how deceitful and selfish she is.

My cousin was a fashion model and she's so much better looking than Elle even without any operations or makeup, and she's a much better person and one of the kindest people I know. I also know a lot of true "girlbosses" who are rockstars at work, and take good care of themselves and treat their partners and friends very well. Elle just can't compare and she's no catch to people who aren't Dicky, and even he eventually got sick of her and kicked her to the curb.

My guess is that early on Joe
a) thought Elle was a normal girl, as in not a delusional, emotionally immature narcissist
-and-
b) was kind of feeling himself as he rose up the ranks at his big law firm and had some condescending attitudes about Elle making "girl money". Ew.

Then, my guess is that Joe realized that he had taken a wrong turn, heard the howling winds of the ceaseless money vortex, and plotted his exit.
Elle stayed behind in fantasyland, did not grow or learn, and grafted her crazy onto fellow fabulist "Professor" Rick.

I have this thought that maybe Joe's mom is a housewife who 100% relies on his dad for financial support, therefore to Joe it's not odd that a man is expected to foot the bill for many purchases and living costs.

Maybe he never asked Smelle how much she makes at MFDA and assumed she was getting paid peanuts so he felt he should subsidise her lifestyle (although it's a weird concept but I know a married couple who don't tell each other how much they earn; each spouse pays an equal amount monthly to a joint account used to cover their living expenses and mortgage but all savings, investments etc. are done by each person individually).

But then I can't imagine Joe as this charitable individual who is happy seeing his money going down the drain in a hair salon... His snarky comments indicated he didn't think highly of Smelle's intellect (don't blame him) and around autumn 2017 you could really tell he was done with her.

I believe they met on a dating app. Those are pretty brutal for guys, so finding a pretty girlsfriend off one had to be a relief for him. I don't think he was eager to walk back out into that storm. A lot of times it has to be bad enough to make it worth leaving even if things aren't great. Even that doesn't help Elle as eventually it either gets bad enough or she forces him into either giving her the rest of his life or leaving. And the whole while I am sure his friends are asking him what the heck he is thinking with every social event where she shows up and puts her Elleness on full display.

I think as a guy in his mid to late 20's he also entered the relationship without any expectations of staying with her for the rest of his life. Elle, on the other hand, had been on the husband hunt for a couple years already. Heck she probably sees herself as making husband progress every time theres a second date.

She's going to struggle to find someone her own age who makes good money who is looking for a stay at home mom/house wife. Most guys who make the kind of money she wants to have are either the kind of people who want their spouse to contribute. Or they expect a much prettier person who doesn't get in the way and makes reasonable conversation at parties (which is kind of gross tbh) and they'll trade up when they get the chance (ew)

The only people I know who are stay at home moms are either women who weren't making a lot before they had kids so it isn't worth paying for child care just so you can work to pay the child care. Or they married physicians and are a bit older. And I know one young woman who married a physician and she stopped working after she had their first kid (they got married when he was in med school still) and she's one of those stay at home moms who is always taking kids to swim lessons and doing a lot of enrichment with her three kids (which I get it they def can afford it). It definitely is common to be a stay at home mom in the midwest but those housewives may have an expensive car and a nice house but they aren't blowing 5k+ a month on shopping like Elle does. But I don't think the stay at home parent model works for a lot of people as much as it used to. Maybe I'm biased bc I work in a field with a lot of working women.

Also! I forgot, Elle doesn't have much of a personality most people these days want a partner that they can talk to and not just someone who is there. Her idea of what a relationship an marriage is is just so out dated

You hit the nail on the head. I don't think Joe was thinking that far, especially since lawyers, doctors, and people with masters and doctorate degrees often don't think about marriage at all until they are out of school and have worked for a few years, and that definitely means their 30s. Marrying young is also not common in Canada and especially not in a city like Vancouver.

This is anecdotal but most of the lawyers/physicians/bankers/programmers/engineers/entrepreneurs (aka men with enough income for the duchess) men I know tend to marry in their 30s or even 40s. If they take good care of themselves and make an effort, they are often a huge catch for the majority of women once they're a few years into their careers and have no shortage of women to choose from. Joe was fresh out of law school and a previous relationship when he met Elle and probably didn't realize he now had way more options than he ever did previously.

Feta is Greek though... What is she on about?
Oh, she said the ricotta cheese wasn’t “an Italian brand” therefore in her tiny mind it wouldn’t be good, but turns out it was and she proceeded to lick it off her hands. 🤣 which is making me laugh again just thinking about it! The jerky quick movements when she does that kind of thing are alarmingly hilarious!

Ah OK. I didn't watch the video. I thought she said feta is an Italian cheese.

Yeah, I can’t help but wonder if she grossly misrepresented herself in her relationships with Joe and Rick. We’ve seen it ourselves in her content, but I think it could definitely be seen as a deal breaker and a betrayal in a relationship. When I think about Rick and Joe they couldn’t be more different personality wise but both seemed to have to same reaction to something she was doing or not doing.

I think she's just really selfish and high maintenance, and doesn't offer nearly as much to her potential partners as they would to her in a relationship. People are always more tolerant at the beginning of a relationship but over time, their real feelings and comfort zone comes out and that's probably when they realize she's just not it.
